Missa Populi (Mass or Music of the People) came about as a result of a desire to combine the elements of contemporary musical expression with that of the current Catholic Liturgy. The only deviation from current practice is the setting for the Credo which is not usually set to music in the Masses of today. It uses the concept of the old beatnik coffe house poets reading their poetry to a background of some sort of music, mostly jazz. It is noteworthy that the Credo was composed in the Bartok Cottage in Saranac Lake, New York on July 21st, 2005.

For the German Protestant Church Congress 2015, this ancient text was set in contemporary style by Tilman Jager under the title Missa Pacis. Impressive sounds, mystic-meditative moods, Latin American rhythms, catchy melodies and a Dona nobis pacem for everyone to join in combine in the Missa Pacis to form a convincing whole. The hour-long composition is scored for 4-8 part chorus with optional soloists and accompanying band. The work is generally tonal, but offers a breadth of different styles ranging from classical choral-symphonic to rhythmic choral movements with influences from gospel, jazz, and pop. Next to the Stabat Mater, the Petite Messe solennelle of 1863 is Rossini's second extensive sacred composition. Ostensibly, the work was an occasional piece, written for the dedication of a private chapel for the once well-to-do Parisian nobility. This explains the reduced instrumental accompaniment for two pianos and harmonium. Of course this instrumental garb, reminiscent of decent, elevated salon music, produces an unmistakable timbre which through its typical Rossini rhythm obtains an additional flair.
