Music for unaccompanied choir features very little in the works of the violin virtuoso and composer Louis Spohr (1784-1859), although he used the chorus to great effect, particularly in his early Romantic operas. Now, Clytus Gottwald has transcribed three of Spohr's songs with piano accompaniment for five-part mixed choir. The texts are by Goethe, Amalia Schoppe, and Uhland. Spohr's music, stylistically typical of a period of musical transition with its indefinable qualities, offers in a special way starting points for Gottwald's technique of arranging, influenced as it is by contemporary music. Gottwald's transcriptions of songs and instrumental works for vocal ensemble, distinguished by their highly sophisticated sound, have become firmly established in choral repertoire throughout the world in recent years.

The Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka was a double bass player and church music composer at the Saxon court of the Elector August the Strong and his son Friedrich August II. In the years after 1721 he composed an extensive repertoire of Catholic church music together with the Kapellmeister Johann David Heinichen. These works, together with the Dresden operas composed by Johann Adolf Hasse in quick succession from 1731 onwards, established the reputation of the Saxon court as one of the most important musical centers of the late Baroque period. Zelenka composed this psalm setting De profundis in D minor ZWV 97 in 1724 on the death of his father, including a concluding Requiem verse. This was later replaced by the lesser doxology so that the work can be performed in the office of Christmas week. Both endings are included in this new edition. Three trombones, used as an independent instrumental group, give the work a special tonal color. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4006400.

Throughout his career the Austrian composer and musicologist Hans Gal (1890–1987) wrote a number of operas, orchestral works, concertos and vocal pieces, and during the latter part of his life he concentrated particularly on chamber music. In addition he published books and essays on composers such as Brahms, Schubert and Verdi. Forced to emigrate from Germany in 1933, Gal finally settled in Edinburgh, where he taught at the University, and continued to compose for the rest of his long life. His Oboe Sonata is a valuable addition to the repertoire. The three movements, like all Gal’s works, are rooted in the late Romantic period.

Still no Meistersinger year
ISBN 9783765104145. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. German.
According to Wagners plan, 1862 was to have been the Meistersinger year. Although the libretto was completed in January, its musical setting dragged on and was ultimately postponed. Among the reasons for this were his relocation to the town of Biebrich am Rhein, his crushing financial concerns, the constant flow of summer visitors from near and far, his temporary invalidity of several weeks following a dog bite...All of this can be read in detail in the letters which also include Wagners artistic successes of that year: In Frankfurt, he conducted his Lohengrin for the very first time (twelve years after the first performance!); he introduced the Meistersinger Overture in Leipzig and organized concerts with scenes from his operas in Vienna. Of far-reaching biographical import are his complete amnesty he was once again allowed to return to his native Saxony as well as his further distancing and ultimately final separation from his wife Minna.Still no Meistersinger year.

Antonio Lotti was employed at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice for almost his entire life. In 1717, however, he was lured for two years to Dresden by the Saxon court as a composer of operas. A score of his Kyrie in G minor and his Gloria in G major, combined under the title Missa Sapientia, was later found amongst the personal belongings of Dresden court composer Jan Dismas Zelenka.Zelenka was not the only one person impressed by the Mass: at least two other illustrious composers had copies made, namely Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Indeed, the Mass is a magnificent piece, following the concertante style of the time, with a brilliant yet warm string sound (2 violins and 2 violas). Score available separately - see item CA.4066100.

Hungarian composer Ede (Eduard) Poldini (1869-1957) was largely known in his home country for his many operas. In the 1890s, Poldini composed a collection of seven pieces for piano under the title MARIONETTES, IEP 17, the most popular of which is the 2nd movement, La Poupée Valsante (The Dancing Doll), with its fleet, graceful introductory melody. This transcription for violin by Fritz Kreisler is what made Poldini internationally famous.

Nico Schoeters took his first percussion lessons with Eric Buyle in the Academy for Music and Word in Boom, near Antwerp, after getting the hang of it through private lessons by Jozef Vervliet. Afterwards he continued his music studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he was taught by Leo Ouderits, Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers. In 1998 he graduated there with great distinction as Master in percussion. After cooperating on various projects in Belgium and abroad as a freelance percussionist, Nico took up a position as a percussionist in the National Orchestra of Belgium. However, despite of all his achievements as a percussionist, Nico Schoeters didn’t take his first musical steps by playing percussion, but by playing the piano. His love for the piano remained a common thread in his musical career. For example, he played numerous gigs as a pianist with his jazz quartet ‘Just Friends, consisting of a number of top musicians who are his friends. In addition he started composing piano works in 2012. Cosmopolydian is my first composition for symphonic windband. It's a solo piece for flute and vibraphone which is dedicated to Inge Smedts, principal piccolo at the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides. It is written in the context of a musical project ‘Cocktail Maison'. This project includes a concert on May 25th, 2017 in De Singel in Antwerp where this work will be premiered, a CD recording and a concert tour. All the pieces for this project are new compositions by Piet Swerts, Jef Neve, Klaas Coulembier, Etienne Houben, Bart Watté, Jan Huylebroeck, Francois Glorieux and myself. All the compositions are inspired by a cocktail. My choice is the Cosmopolitan, but the non-alcoholic version, the mocktail actually. The title Cosmopolydian is a nod to the lydian scale which I used as a base for the majority of the piece. The idea behind the music is an image of children enjoying themselves, worry-free, during the holidays. Tired but satisfied, they go to sleep and have wonderful dreams. The next day they wake up to start a beautiful new day.The work is constructed in a typical ABA form. A quick first part: ‘sparkling allegro', which of course should sound very light and playful. A slow middle part warm adagio, in which the beautiful dreams become audible. The last part is a re-exposition of the first part in which eventually all the themes merge into the final.

Up-and-coming composer George Sweet is a string educator with years of experience working with developing students. He presents us with a lush and lyrical composition that seemingly flows off the page and into the hearts of students and audiences alike. Sweet's understanding of young students' technical limitations, along with his fresh compositional perspective, make him a unique new voice in the field. We know you are going to love this one!.In the Final Analysis takes its inspiration from various speeches given by both John and Robert Kennedy. The composer was moved by the Kennedys’ idea of a strong, diverse, and cooperative society. John Kennedy’s commencement speech at the American University in 1963 was especially inspirational and the piece takes its title from the following passage:For in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s futures. And we are all mortal. The introduction sets the tone of the piece and is reminiscent of the “Americana†feel of composers like Aaron Copland. The main theme enters in Violin 1 at m. 7.Throughout the piece, this material is presented in different situations and moods, reflective of the diverse society spoken of by the Kennedys. A lyrical “B†section appears at m. 23 and later at m. 48 in a slightly different orchestration. The introductory material returns at m. 63 and leads to a vibrant coda which brings the piece to a close. In the Final Analysis was commissioned by Victor Fernandez and the Booker Middle School Orchestra.
