Orchestra SKU: PO.UME14 Composed by Anthony Ritchie. Perfect. Full score. Promethean Editions #UME14. Published by Promethean Editions (PO.UME14). ISBN 9781877564864. Completed while Ritchie was Composer-in-Residence with the Dunedin Sinfonia in 1993, Boum is named after a mysterious echo heard by characters in E.M. Forster's novel A Passage to India. The echo comes to symbolise the mysteries of life and death, and was a starting point to a general theme of existentialism and human struggle that pervades Ritchie's symphony. An eclectic range of influences can be heard across Boum's four movements. A languid, Eastern-sounding violin theme in the first movement is influenced by gamelan music, referencing the pelog scale. Inspired by traditional music of the Cook Islands, the jaunty second movement is a vigorous scherzo dominated by the sound of log-drum and tom-toms. The third movement is a lament for the victims of the Bosnian war, its evocative opening inspired by the wailing of a Maori karanga, while the fourth movement can be thought of as a symphonic dance, its pulse and motivic ideas reminiscent of rock music. $122.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

SKU: GI.G-10678 A Philosophical and Practical Approach to the Choral Art. Composed by Will Kesling. Music Education. 472 pages. GIA Publications #10678. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-10678). ISBN 9781622776436. Drawing from his five decades of success as a conductor and educator in the choral field, Will Kesling has compiled a comprehensive choral methods resource that addresses every necessary fundamental for achieving artistry in the choral art. Written in clear and conversational language, this resource covers: Building a healthy and beautiful choral sound Dealing with vocal issues Selecting repertoire and programming concerts Developing score study skills and interpretive insights Understanding the characteristics of musical periods and composers Planning, preparing for, and running rehearsals The Voices I Hear also explores important but often overlooked topics, including a discussion of performing sacred music in secular education settings, techniques for performing choral-orchestral works, choral versus orchestral conducting, and how to become a true “maestro.†Individual chapters also function as standalone topics of study. A valuable read for emerging and seasoned conductors alike, The Voices I Hear is an expert study of the aesthetic, intellectual, and practical aspects of the choral art. Dr. Will Kesling is Professor of Choral and Orchestral Conducting at the University of Florida, where he has taught for two decades. He has conducted hundreds of choral ensembles and nearly fifty of the world’s finest symphony orchestras. His ensembles have received international attention for their excellence and musical expression.  Thank you, Dr. Kesling, for the decade you gave of yourself to write the most complete and comprehensive writing on the topics of choral techniques, methods, and conducting I have seen. It is in-depth yet practical, to the point of being a valuable resource for both the young conductors entering the choral field to the well-established professionals. You have given us a solid foundation in all significant areas of the choral art, including, among many others, the production of beautiful vocal tone, detailed physical vocal production, textual and physical components of English diction, repertoire programming, appropriate style, interpretation and phrasing, and a pathway to successful conducting of combined choral and orchestral forces. Your enormous and highly successful career, with worldwide performances and numerous awards and honors, has enabled you to bring validity and integrity to the entire writing. —Donald Neuen   Distinguished Professor Emeritus, UCLA   Former member of the Robert Shaw Chorale   Mr. Shaw’s Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Choruses For more than 50 years, Dr. Will Kesling has been and continues to be a prominent figure and voice in the International and American choral profession. His new book, The Voices I Hear, is the distillation of his long and distinguished career as a conductor and choral music educator. The driving and consuming passion throughout Kesling’s life is the preparation and performance of the world’s rich and diverse choral and orchestral repertoire and the education, development, and growth of those who perform and conduct it. This book is a summation of a lifetime immersed in the choral art and all its many aspects. It overflows with insights into the choral art that will not only instruct the beginning conductor but also will enlighten and entertain the seasoned professional conductor and educator. It is filled with wit, wisdom, and practical advice to all practitioners of the choral arts. I enthusiastically recommend Kesling’s enlightening new book as an important addition to the choral pedagogy bibliography and for use as an invaluable new text for choral practicum classes for both graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Kesling has brought to the choral profession significant new insights to all lovers of the choral art. —Craig Jessop   Professor of Music, University of Utah   Former Music Director of the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square   and the United States Air Force Singing Sergeants Will Kesling’s book, The Voices I Hear, is practical and philosophical, useful and inspirational, focused and comprehensive. The observations and advice are based on his vast personal experiences on the podium with choirs and orchestras, and the book is a monumental resource for both the young conductor and the veteran. Containing a broad spectrum of musical styles, composers, and topics, Kesling’s direct and practical writing connects immediately with today’s choral musician. Keep The Voices I Hear nearby as there will be many times down the road where the information and opinions in Dr. Kesling’s book will answer the questions you have, as well as the ones you didn’t even know to ask! —Jerry Blackstone   Professor Emeritus of Music (conducting) and Director of Choirs (retired)   School of Music, Theatre & Dance, University of Michigan This is the textbook I wish had been available when I was beginning my studies. It is comprehensive in scope, practical and helpful in its suggestions, and, perhaps most surprising in a book from an academic, superbly written in clear and powerful English. Kesling speaks with conviction, clarity, and polish, and he finds colorful and memorable ways of making his points and presents the material from the perspective of one who has done all these things for decades at a highly professional level. I give this volume the highest possible recommendation. —Daniel Gawthrop   Composer & Conductor. $39.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

English. The ballet La Bayadère (The Temple Dancer or The Temple Maiden) was created in 1877 for famed French choreographer Marius Petipa to music by Ludwig Minkus (1826-1917). In four act and seven tableaux, the ballet tells the story of the bayadère Nikiya and the warrior Solor, lovers who are beset by jealous rivals, arranged marriages beyond their control, murder, an opium-fueled hallucination of the afterlife, and a vengeful god that destroys the temple and everybody in it as revenge for Nikiya's murder. It was first performed on February 4, 1877, by the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was hailed as a success and masterpiece immediately after the premiere, particularly The Kingdom of the Shades scene in Act II, an excerpt which remains a major standalone work for the ballet repertoire. Modern performances of La Bayadère are almost always derived from a 1941 version sated for the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet by Vladimir Ponomarev and Vakhtang Chabukiani, which incorporates additional music by Minkus, Drigo, and Pugni. Act II takes place after Nikiya is killed by a concealed venomous snake. A depressed Solor smokes opium, resulting in a vision of Nikiya's spirit dwelling in the Kingdom of the Shades, a nirvana in the Himalayas. The two lovers reconcile among the shades of other bayadères in a Pas de deux, then Solor is awakened just in time for his arranged marriage to another woman. This orchestration of Act II has been completed by William McDermott. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp.Perc(2): Harp: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set). Performing Materials: score and parts Composer's Note: A fancy is an English version of the Italian capriccio, a form introduced in the 16th century for works in various media wherein the force of imagination has better success than observation of the rules of art (Furetiere, Dictionnaire universel). The term is also used to describe a suite of dances. Fred's Fancies is a series of six dances that are quite capricious in nature, a fair portrait of the person to whom the work is dedicated. The suite's musical material is introduced in the first movement, an athletic Allegro. The following four movements emphasize some aspect of the first. The second, Waltz, is a quiet variation of the first movement's opening gesture. The third, Manic, combines the opening gesture with a secondary theme emphasizing descending perfect fourths separated by half-steps. The fourth movement, Arioso, re-visits themes from the Waltz, now set in a freer rhythm. The fifth, Favotte, combines elements of the gavotte with fugal episodes. The cycle culminates in a speedy final movement, Vivace, that brings back the all principal themes of cycle. $49.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

SATB choir a cappella - Intermediate SKU: MN.CH-1246 Composed by Dale Jergenson. St. Cyril's Music Series. 21st Century. Octavo. Duration 2 minutes, 45 seconds. Laurendale Associates #CH-1246. Published by Laurendale Associates (MN.CH-1246). Evening Comes is the first piece in a series of commissions for the Saint Cyril's Music Series and is composed specifically for an evening service. Cardinal Newman's prayer, suggests a quiet, hushed, prayerful attitude which is evoked by an abundance of suspensions and resolutions within a relatively conservative harmonic context. The beginning tempo marking of Espressivo is intended to convey a feeling of rubato throughout, but not overly so. The fortes should never be thunderous, but the pianos should be exquisite, with the final amen eliciting a sense of renewed beginning rather than a final ending.l

Stainer & Bell Ltd. #MB95. Published by Stainer & Bell Ltd. (ST.MB95). ISBN 9790220223662. Partly as a result of the nature of their manuscript transmission, songs from the period 1150 to 1300 have remained unknown or unnoticed with the exception of Sumer is icumen in and Angelus ad virginem. The rich variety of content in MB95 is therefore an important corrective and addition to our knowledge of the period, and is evidence for a vigorous interest in the cultivation and preservation of song in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Not all the songs edited here originated in Britain, but their presence in manuscripts of British origin suggests that all were at least sung here. Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 2.5 SKU: BT.DHP-1104862-140 March of the Women ( from The Merry Widow). Composed by Franz Lehar. Arranged by Wil van der Beek. Great Classics. Classical. Score Only. Composed 2012. 16 pages. De Haske Publications #DHP 1104862-140. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-1104862-140). 9x12 inches. This lively, attractive march originates from one of the best-known operettas by Franz Lehár, Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow), a work that brought the composer enormous success. The operetta features many lovely arias, and catchy dances, but also subtle passages and wonderful singable tunes. One of those is Ja, das Studium der Weiber ist schwer (‘The study of women is difficult’), a tune incorporated in the trio of this march. Lehár obviously had high expectations for it, giving it a prominent place within the operetta. He also used it as an effective finale piece.
$25.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

$91.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 2.5 SKU: BT.DHP-1104862-010 March of the...(+)
Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 2.5 SKU: BT.DHP-1104862-010 March of the Women (from The Merry Widow). Composed by Franz Lehar. Arranged by Wil van der Beek. Great Classics. Classical. Set (Score & Parts). Composed 2012. De Haske Publications #DHP 1104862-010. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-1104862-010).
$98.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Bassoon, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violoncello SKU: PR.16400261S Compose...(+)
Bassoon, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violoncello SKU: PR.16400261S Composed by Dan Welcher. With Standard notation. Duration 15 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #164-00261S. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.16400261S). UPC: 680160038411. Since the bassoon is my own instrument, many people have asked me why I've written so little for the instrument. Beyond my early Concerto Da Camera for bassoon and small orchestra, written for Leonard Sharrow in 1975, I've not written a single piece that features the bassoon as a solo vehicle (though I have written three woodwind quintets). When I first began composing seriously, critics were quick to point out that my orchestral writing revealed nothing of my roots as a woodwind player--and bassoonists asked why my pieces didn't have more bassoon solos. Perhaps I was so aware that people were looking at me as a bassoonist/composer that I was determined to remove that stigma. Now that my transformation from performer to composer is complete, however, it's time to re-address my instrument. I wanted this new piece to be serious rather than whimsical. The Wind Won't Listen represents my return to the bassoon as the highly expressive, poetic soul that it is. As such, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the piece is based on a poem, and that the title of the piece as well as both its movement titles come from lines in that poem. I first read Beth Gylys' poem Split at the MacDowell Colony in the summer of 2001, and it made a big impression on me. My personal life had been ruptured by divorce in the preceding year. This poem, with its dry insistence on observation rather than feeling, expressed the wrung-out state of my emotions at the time better than any I had seen. I set it to music, as a song, immediately. In this format, for voice and piano, I was able to put a musical note to every word of the poem. The first lines of the poem, Everyone I know is crying, or should be crying, became a melody that haunted me even without the words. The work for bassoon and string quartet is an outgrowth of the song. The first movement is labeled Romanza, and has a loose formal arch structure of A-B-C-B-A, with B and C being fast sections framed by the lamenting A music. In addition to hearing the bassoon's first notes attached to the lines Everyone I know is crying, there's a sense of agitation, of loss, of longing, and at times of desperation in the music. At one point, the opening theme from Tristan even appears in the strings. The second movement follows, without a real pause--the pizzicato final chords of the first movement becoming the increasingly aggressive opening chords of the second. The recitative is actually a foreshadowing of the basic theme that will be varied, again to the words of the song: Life makes itself without us. Don't let me tell you how it is. Go out. Look. The recitative begins in an anguished state, but subsides into more gentle singing by the end, when it simply falls into an ostinato 5/8-3/4 pattern to begin the variations. Marked Very steady tempo; Dancing, this set of variations consists of three dances, each faster than the previous. The first, in the aforementioned 5/8-3/4 meter, gives way to a 3/8 scherzo, which in turn takes on a furious 2/4 scurrying motion. The music becomes breathless, almost pulse-less, and an ethereal theme appears in the violins while the rushing music continues, sotto voce in the bassoon. This new theme is also from the song: Why do I do this? The wind won't listen. The bassoon re-states its Everyone I know is crying melody from the first movement, and at length the 5/8-3/4 music returns, more subdued this time. The piece ends on a major-minor chord, suspended. The Wind Won't Listen is dedicated to the man who commissioned it, bassoonist Steven Dibner--who shares my passion for poetry and language. --Dan Welcher. $41.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
