This arrangement by Oliver Nelson is a gorgeous alto saxophone feature of Cole Porter's I Worship You. The alto player can either perform the solo part (completely written out) as originally played and recorded by Cannonball Adderley on his album Domination, or can choose to read the basic melody and improvise. There is also short solo space for piano. Clarinet doubles are required, but the ensemble writing is very playable. This is a great alto feature on a beautiful melody! 5-4-4-3.

There may not be a more beautiful ballad anywhere in jazz ensemble literature. This is an alto saxophone feature throughout and was recorded on the Full Nelson album and also included in the Verve Jazz Masters collection CD. This is a stunning piece, which has a decidedly orchestral/classical sound to it. The possibility of using the original clarinet, flute oboe, bass clarinet and celeste parts makes this a most interesting and special piece. Starting out with a bombastic Eastern-sounding introduction (ala Genghis Khan), it then launches into a hard-driving minor blues stated by the trombone, trumpet and tenor saxophone. This great chart is recorded (1999) on the Azica CD Swingin' the Blues. Holman grabs this simple Ellington tune and runs with it. The arrangement is yet another amazing example of Bill Holman's extraordinary arranging skills. There is solo space for tenor saxophone and, of course, trumpet. There is no real need for any extra high trumpet playing. The ensemble shout choruses alone are enough reason to put this chart in every jazz band library in the land. Every once in a while a melody is written that words cannot convey and only the soul understands. Master-of-melodies, Pat Metheny, did just that in his composition of Tell Her You Saw Me, and Bob Curnow magnificently transformed it into a majestic big band arrangement. Written for and recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Birdland Dream Band, this chart by Willie Maiden is uncharacteristically easy to play for the band due to very reasonable brass ranges. However, this is a 2 tenor saxophone and 2 trombone feature throughout. While quite a bit of the solos are written out, there is also a lot of space for improvisation. This is one of Willie's most delightful pieces scored for Maynard. 5-4-4-3.
