Moonlight Serenade was composed in 1939, by Glenn Miller in his typically American big-band style. It was an immediate success and it even became the signature tune of Glenn Miller. The catchy melody has since been used in various films and television series. It has been performed in many styles, from romantic to swinging. The Flanders Recorder Quartet likes to play this work with a low recorder consort: tenor, F bass, C bass, great bass (each instrument then plays an octave lower). This gives the work a slightly “close harmony” feel. Of course the more usual line-up also does the music justice.

For flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B flat), 2 bassoons, double bassoon or bass tuba, 4 horns (E flat major/B flat) with additional parts for horns in F. When he was a mere 18 years old, Richard Strauss composed the highly Romantic, one-movement Serenade for Wind Instruments, op. 7. Extremely popular among wind players to this day, this work recalls in instrumentation and structure Mozart's “Gran Partita”, which certainly served as a model for Strauss. The serenade was not premiered in its Bavarian homeland as might have been expected, butrather in Dresden, in 1882, under the direction of the then much-esteemed conductor Franz Wüllner, who had also given the inaugural performances of Richard Wagner's Rheingold and Die Walküre and later premiered Strauss' tone poems Till Eulenspiegel and Don Quixote. So it was a great honour for the young Bavarian! Editor Norbert Gertsch presents this little masterwork here for the first time in Urtext quality - in full score and instrumental parts - for which not just the first edition but also the autograph manuscript was scrutinised fastidiously.

Serenade No. 1 (Op. 11) was composed in 1858, while Brahms enjoyed a position in the tiny court of Detmold, the capital of the Principality of Lippe. The original work, now lost, is said to have been scored for chamber orchestra with a wind section of flute, two clarinets, horn and bassoon. Unfortunately only Brahms’ later version for full orchestra remains. Using Brahms’ full orchestral score, and retaining as much of the instrumental colour as possible, Chris Nex has arranged this Serenade for the modern grouping of wind quintet, string quartet and double bass. This new edition replaces an earlier publication which first appeared in the Phylloscopus catalogue (PP366S & 366).

The Wind Serenade Op.102, was Wilhelm Berger’s last work, written 1910 shortly before he died following a long illness and an operation. It was first performed in Berlin after his death, and was very well received. He handles the different instruments with skill and imagination, creating a whole as well as a mass of delightful detail. Apart from omitting the contra-bassoon, Berger has adopted the same instrumental ensemble as did Richard Strauss for his Serenade and Suite. The music is in the fine tradition of romantic writing for wind, but Berger abandons the classical arrangement of movements and produces new and exciting changes of mood, key and colour. The manuscript is held in the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, who made a copy available for the preparation of the first edition of the Serenade Op. I02, first published by Phylloscopus Publications, editors F.H. Nex and C.M.M. Nex. This brand new edition, published nearly 30 years later, is also edited by F.H. Nex and C.M.M. Nex.
