Accordion and Violin soli part for It Is Pain Flowing Down Slowly On A White Wall for Accordion and Strings by Bent Sørensen (2010-11). Co-commissioned by ULTIMA - Oslo Contemporary Music Festival Trondheim Soloists and Telemark Chamber Orchestra. Programme Note It is pain flowing down slowly on a white wall – the sentence – the title – was given to me by a Hungarian woman in August 2008. She put a note with the sentence in my hand after a festival and told me that my music reminded her of the sentence written by a Hungarian poet. It is music full of slow motion – full ofsorrow – full of tangos with no dancers. Maybe I imagined the tears of an accordion player flowing down slowly on the bellow of the instrument. Vier Seiten for violoncello is an attempt to present an event that in reality takes about two seconds in extreme slow motion, thus making even the micromovements visible or audible beyond the straight line of motion. When I composed the piece, the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna came to my mind again and again - an accident which was shown on TV in slow motion again and again until it became unbearable. The fast motion of the car immediately before the crash into a concrete wall, a motion which was no longer purposeful but out of control and which had the car pulled to and fro and from side to side, was followed by that crash. In this extreme slow motion, it is no longer shown as a crash but as the fast telescoping of carbon fibre, metal and human body parts. After this crash, as a postlude so to speak, everything suddenly slowed down, tyres and automotive particles floating in the air, the torso of the vehicle swinging until the motion stopped. It was not until this moment that I realized that the whole presentation of the incident had been accompanied by paralyzing silence. / Violoncelle

Programme Note WHIRLS´ WORLD (1970) for wind quintet. 'Whirl´s World' was composed in 1970 as one of a series of works which explored the so-called musical ´difference-phenomenon´. This term (which I coined in connection with a series of lectures in California that year) indicates a motivic duplicity in which two - often very simple - melodic ideas come ´out of phrase´ with each other giving rise to a course of constantly changing conditions. In Whirl´s World the difference phenomenon is heard from the beginning where a three-note motif and a four-note motif are set against each other. It all proceeds lake a lightning-fast series of chess moves; first notenumber 1 of the three-note motif is moved then note number 1 of the four-note motif thereafter note number 2 of the three-note motif - and so on. This fast opening flows into a slow section in which the differences now appear as ´fluctuations´ between very closely related tones (of which one is sung by the musician). There is only one movement built up as an organic growth from slow to furiously fast whirling and back again to slow which can be heard as ´slow-motion whirls´ as a water-world of ripples and bubbles. All this is framed by the introduction described above and a corresponding conclusion in which the movement is now descending ending in the resolute bass full-stop. Per Norgård

MusicWorks - Grade 3 Drawing its title from the Greek word for motion this marvelously paced work from Michael Sweeney explores various forms of motion within the concert band setting. The fanfare-like opening uses interplay between the brass percussion and woodwinds and is followed by a driving main theme. The slow motion middle section uses a striking harmonic scheme stated first by the woodwinds and some unusual orchestration devices before returning to an expanded version of the main theme and dramatic ending. This rewarding and fresh-sounding composition will leave a lasting impression on players and listeners alike. (5:50)

| Symphonie Nr. 9 (MAHLER
GUSTAV) Orchestra [Study Score / Miniature] Universal Edition
Based on the Critical Edition- Orchestra material on hire. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. Th...(+)
Based on the Critical Edition- Orchestra material on hire. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The large-scale form of 'Symphony No. 9' is unusual in a number of ways. It reminds in no way of the ninth symphonies of famous predecessors. Two slow movements, an Andante comodo at the beginning and an Adagio at the end, form the frame for two of the most parodistic and embittered inner movements that Mahler ever wrote - a ländler-waltz combination, and the 'Rondo-Burleske', a bitter, ironic movement that is derisively dedicated 'to my brothers in Apollo'. The most extraordinary part of Mahler's last completed symphony must certainly be the slow finale - a 20-minute long intensively singing movement laden with conflict that includes references to earlier works by Mahler, in slow motion as it were ('Urlicht',' Ablösung im Sommer', the 'Scherzo of Symphony No. 3', 'Der Abschied' from 'Das Lied von der Erde', and 'Oft denk' ich, sie sind nur ausgegangen' from the 'Kindertotenlieder'); it indeed seems that a circle is being closed. (Reinhold Kubik) Universal Edition continues its new study score standard. These completely redesigned scores offer an unparalleled insight into the music of the last hundred years. Great care has been taken to select the best available content for this journey through music history, and every score has been edited according to the latest quality standards./ Répertoire / Orchestre

If you've ever felt compelled to play Flight of the Bumblebee on the 5-string banjo, this is the book for you!Challenging banjo transcriptions of classical masterpieces may seem like a humorous anachronism to some, but not for Italian master Claudio Parravicini, a conservatory graduate who, while majoring in French horn, always believed that the banjo was 'a virtuoso instrument capable of enriching any musical genre.â€In the author's words, 'I chose the classical pieces in this book on the basis of how they might advance right and left-hand banjo technique and even refine the player's musical sensibility¦ Some pieces, like Flight of the Bumblebee will challenge yourability to play rapidly, while others like Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, are much slower, but will test your musical abilities in other ways. The other pieces in the book are: Prelude No. 2 in C minor and Inventions No. 4 and No. 6 by J. S. Bach, Flight of the Bumblebee by Korsakov, Perpetual Motion and Carnival of Venice by Paganini, and Toccata for Piano or Harpsichord by Paradisi. Radiant Music was written for flautist Alice K. Dade at her request for a short recital piece. The CD part is made up of several episodes of shimmering music for flutes dulcimers organs and sampled baroque strings trumpet and choir. This piece attempts to obsess over a repeated sequence of chords – this progression appears in the opening bars of the piece. This sequence reappears in each episode as a harmonic goal for the flute whose part circumnavigates it but never hits it exactly. Also at play in Radiant Music is a notion of fast music that moves slowly versus slow music that moves quickly. This is most evident in the Throbbing musicwhich is very fast but has an immensely slow harmonic motion and in the conclusion which is made of one chord reworked over a long stretch of time. Radiant Music is dedicated to Alice K. Dade with thanks to Alex Sopp who edited the part in 2007. Download the pre-recorded element HERE . If you encounter any problems please email promotion@musicsales.co.uk .
