FALLING MAN for baritone and orchestra are based on Don DeLillo's 2007 novel about the events, aftermath, and changed lives of 9/11,a book which enthralled Kenneth Fuchs. DeLillo's unflinching description of raw terror and absolute chaos provided a standpoint from which Fuchs could begin to come to terms as a composer with the shocking and world-changing events of that fateful morning. The work is cast in the form of a dramatic scena for baritone voice and orchestra, and the principal melodic and harmonic elements are organized around a falling twelve-tone theme. Recorded by JoAnn Falletta and the London Symphony Orchestra with baritone Roderick Williams at Abbey Road Studio, Naxos CD Falling Man 8.559753. This lighthearted, carefree work is easy to remember upon hearing. It has a snappy rhythm that makes you want to dance to its lively tune.
Minstrels were musicians who traveled throughout the countryside providing entertainment to any and all. Their repertoire included songs, dances, jokes, and storytelling. One could find them all over Europe and America from the Middle Ages up until the 20th century. As traveling musicians, they relied on catch tunes that could easily be learned and communicated to their audiences. They were in the business of uplifting people's spirits through fun and laughter.

The Overture to Rossini's Barber of Seville is still considered to this day as one of the most loved and best recognized classical works in the world. This music has been included in many forms of media, including movies, commercials, and of course, cartoons. I wanted to use this well-known music in such a way that it could become a soloist piece with the tuba ensemble in the orchestral role. The provided cadenza is there only as a guideline to what the soloist can really strive for.

This arrangement received its premiere at the Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference in Feb. 2013. It was requested and performed by the Oldham County High School Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble under the direction of Brad Rogers and Chris Schmidt. The tuba soloist for the performance was Chris Combest.
