A New World is a musical story across five movements with texts by authors from Cicero and Ovid to George William Russel; from nursery rhymes to war poets.
The music and texts link to form a narrative that questions what sort of ‘New Worlds’ have come into existence, or could be created in our future, and considers how we balance human traits of fear, displacement, isolation and conflict with equally human traits of love, hope, forgiveness and unity.
5. Love

When I started work on this clarinet quintet, in October 2021, the 3-month-old Taliban takeover of Afghanistan was very fresh in everyones mind and there seemed to be a collective feeling of utter helplessness as the country descended into chaos and fear, once more. The idea for this piece came in a conversation with my Afghan friend, Gulwali Passarlay, in which he was expressing the hope that people would continue to think about Afghanistan and to remember, violent political upheaval aside, what an incredibly rich, beautiful and ancient culture this country has.Part of this wonderful culture are the centuries-old, mythical tales, often with a moral message, that have been passed down through many generations. The Faithful Gazelle tells of a Beggar raised to riches by a magical Gazelle, only to lose everything again when she becomes sick and he ignores her pleas for help. The clarinet with its enormous scope of timbre and pitch seemed the perfect vehicle for the Gazelle and the cello a gruff, then majestic, then gruff again Beggar! I am deeply grateful to West Cork Chamber Festival for commissioning this work and to clarinettist Matt Hunt and the Signum Quartet for working so patiently on it, with me. Also to Gulwali Passarlay and specialist Afghan musicologists John Baily, Katherine St John and Dr Lloyd Miller for sharing their immense knowledge and love of Afghan music and culture.Roxanna Panufnik, 31 January 2022 This product is Printed on Demand and may take several weeks to fulfill. This collection of nine classic Rock tunes spans five decades of rock history. The arrangements in Rock Philharmonic contain complete versions and lead sheets of original hit songs by top groups and artists: Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby Day, Sonny and Cher, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Journey, and Green Day. Each piece includes a flexible arrangement that allows the melody, harmony, and bass parts to be played by all sections in the string orchestra, like or mixed instrument groups, quartets, or trios---allowing players to learn the component parts of rock and roll, play the classic arrangement, create their own arrangements, or perform the tunes solo. In addition to string orchestra, the arrangements are also set for electric strings with optional guitar/electric guitar, piano, and drumset. The student book contains a full-length, two-page play thru version of the melody, which follows closely the original recording and includes clearly labeled Intro, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, and Outro sections. The bass and harmony component parts are then presented in a lead sheet format, along with a flow chart that matches the order of the Melody Line Play Thru. The teacher's book contains a full score and reproducible piano and percussion parts. Guitar chords appear in all parts. For easy practice, the accompanying CD has two tracks for each piece---a complete track and a backing track---and TNT 2 software to mix the level of each instrument, change pitch, change tempo, and create loops. The CD can also serve as an aid to learning by ear. What has made this Mass rise to the top in popularity in parishes across the English-speaking world? Its adaptability. From parishes with keyboard and/or guitar and cantor to cathedrals with a large SATB choir and multiple instruments (organ, brass quartet, timpani, handbells), Mass of Wisdom has proven itself as a “Mass for the masses.†Its step-wise melodic patterns make it easy to learn without sounding musically trite in any way. Music directors agree that the through-composed Gloria is one of the most finely crafted of all the new musical settings of the prayer. That fine crafting extends to all components of this Mass, especially the acclamations sung during the Eucharistic Prayer. The multi-layered Hosannas in the Sanctus will delight the members of the choir as well as the singing assembly. This is a Mass setting that simply soars. It is a perfect setting for Ordinary Time, but music directors tell us that the Christmas and Easter seasons are made more glorious and joyful when this setting is sung, especially when the additional instrumentation is added. Dioceses and parishes that employed Mass of Wisdom as the first setting during the implementation of the new translation have found themselves returning to it time and time again. It truly has become part of the “Catholic musical DNA†across the United States and beyond.

The seven-movement in the snowy margins might be considered a sort of atomic suite, as each movement is succinct, yet a microcosmic powerhouse inspired by “The Comet,” by Polish writer and Holocaust victim Bruno Schulz. Hersch’s intensity is expressed through dramatically captivating violin gestures, pushing the boundaries of texture, technique, and emotion.Michael Hersch’s in the snowy margins was written in 2010. Like much of his work, it is grounded in literature and art. The title is drawn from a short story, The Comet by Polish writer, poet, and artist, Bruno Schulz (1892-1942). This forms the last of his collection The Street of Crocodiles, published in 1934. Schulz was shot by a Nazi officer in 1942.Both the title of Hersch’s work, and the ‘motto’ found on the composer’s manuscript (‘Thus far and no further. But what has become of the end of the world…’) are to be found in The Comet. It’s interesting that in in the snowy margins, unlike his earlier Fourteen Pieces which were inspired by the poetry of Primo Levi, Hersch chose to not title each individual movement with a quote. However his choices of text are applied, there is a clear quality of distillation. In every case, the texts which the composer has chosen to eschew lie beneath the music, akin to the greater mass of an iceberg, submerged, but imminent.Hersch also has very particular taste in visual art, and there seems to be common ground between the intensely expressionist drawing of Schulz, and those of Michael Mazur, which inspired his string quartet Images from a Closed Ward. The parallels between these artists reflect common traits shared between these two pieces, which provide a window on how the music should be approached, expressively and technically. I would argue, that from a violinist’s point of view, this pertains directly to how bow and left hand should approach the string: the febrile vibrancy of both Mazur and Schulz’s pencil and charcoal strokes, perhaps what T.S. Eliot called the ‘circulation of the lymph’, in every gesture, speaks to the intense experience, physically and emotionally, of playing (and hearing) this music. There is an intense sense of ‘truth to materials’ at every moment, the sense that every note sings on the edge of, or even beyond, total collapse.— Peter Sheppard-Skaerved.

Relentless is a piece which attempts to capture the connotation of the word itself. To be relentless can suggest positive or negative behavior depending upon the circumstances. What is common to either situation is a burning desire to bring about an intended result. For the artist, being relentless about one's work and ideals accompanied by the necessary commitment to bring them to fruition is a basic prerequisite for artistic success. It is adaptable to any solo instrument. Solo parts are included for C concert, B-flat, E-flat, and bass clef instruments.

Most well-known and generally popular - that's what the Happy Birthday meals served by Claus-Dieter Ludwig are. Meanwhile, they are available in various instrumentations (for piano solo and piano duet, accordion duo, string quartet, piano trio). Now, Andreas Tarkmann has rearranged the work, and it's the wind instrument players' turn to be invited to the buffet - we beg your pardon, to come into their own as gourmets! Flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon enjoy five entertaining variations on the famous birthday song into which other music titles have been sneaked as well: 'Andante festivo e culinario', 'Lento lasagne e lambrusco', 'Marcia marsala e mozzarella', 'Valzero vongole e vaniglia', and the crowning dessert, a fiery 'Tango tartufo e tagliatelle'!

The second part of the Chthonic Flute Suite commissioned by Areon Flutes in 2012. This suite has two main inspirations: ideologically it draws guidance from the book The Dream and the Underworld (1979) by James Hillman (1926-2011) and musically it explores the textural possibilities of a flute ensemble within the context of the heavy chamber music style I have developed with Edmund Welles: the bass clarinet quartet since 1996. This style draws virtuosic precision from the classical realm; innovation and texture from jazz; and power, rhythm and overall perspective from rock and metal. The term chthonic [thon-ik] generally means underworld. However, Hillman thoroughly elaborates that its true meaning extends below the earth and beyond it into invisible, non-physical and far distant psychic realms: the deeper mysteries of the invisible. The duo is divided into two sections: Nekyia and Hypnoia. Each of these is a Greek myth-nerd term for some key aspect of an archetypal descent into the underworld. In fact, nekyia is a term that specifically means archetypal descent as one finds in myths across the ages from Dante to the Greeks and beyond. Hillman sees a lack of sufficient nekyia myths in our modern culture, yet our popular heroes in films and music are shady underworld characters. Dante's underworld was our culture's last, and it was imagined even before the Renaissance had properly begun. Our ethnic roots reach back to great underworld configurations: the Celtic Dagda or Cerunos, the Germanic Hel, and the Biblical Sheol. All have faded... (p.64) Hyponoia is a more subtle term used by Plato that refers to an undersense or a deeper meaning. The search for undersense is what we express in common speech as the desire to understand. We want to get below what is going on and see its basis, its fundamentals, how and where it is grounded. (p. 137) This deeper understanding is one of the motivations and constant characteristics of the underworld descent: but the discoveries made and experiences experienced are not always as they seem to be. Hillman recommends over and over that we see and see into each thing for what it is, and not force a dayworld perspective onto dream images and occurrences. As a duo movement, the term enantiodromia (counter enantio, and running dromia) is particularly appropriate as it is a grounding principle by which Jung understands the regulative function of opposites. As Hillman tends to turn things on their metaphorical heads, he fleshes out dualism and oppositionalism in such a way that in the underworld this actually becomes a unifying principle: If you go far enough with any one movement, a countermovement will set in...The way up and the way down are one and the same: the manifestation of one power by opposite forces. (p. 76) This implies a union of the two opposites, a conjunction as contrasted with an opposition. There are two voices but they are both flutes; there are two contrasting halves to the piece, yet they balance each other even in their differences.

THE FIFTH BOOK of the title refers to what Stephen Hartke considers his fifth book of madrigals, only two of which books are actually for voices, with the others being for string instruments. Hartke writes madrigals for string instruments due to their inherent singing quality, but also due to the fluid structural character of the madrigal as a genre that often responds in quite mercurial ways to the emotional unfolding of its text. These five movements are thus abstract madrigals whose larger outlines, shifts in mood, and various internal reminiscences are intended to convey a private, unspoken drama. Commissioned for the Brentano String Quartet by the Frankfurt Burgerstiftung im Holzhausenschlosschen sponsored by the Ernst Max von Grunelius-Stiftung.

So this is true: We are one body in the Lord. The opening words are proclaimed by the choir and echoed by the organ and brass, and what follows is creative and musically satisfying, but never predictable. The brass is tacet during a short, introspective middle section. The mostly homophonic choral writing and the judicious use of brass allow the text- a unique interpretation of 1 Corinthians 12- to be primary.Instrumental parts packet includes: Trumpet I and II in B-flat and C, Trombone I and II, Horn in F (sub for Trombone I), Organ.

Composer Lon W. Chaffin asks, What is a Vortex? A basic definition would be a whirling mass of something, especially water or air, that draws everything near towards its center... such as that relatively mysterious occurrence in space that is often referred to as a black hole - a location in space where the gravitational pull is so powerful that everything, even light, is pulled into its center. That spacial anomaly and the concept of composing for a newly formed tuba ensemble became mingled in my mind and served to generate the ideas that have gone into this piece..

Violin, Oboe, Cello & Piano Duration: 6' Composed: 2012 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC 3 movements I. Seven Toes Down II. En Pointe III. Muddy Boots This charming suite has three short movements, each with its own character. The suite bursts open with breathless energy. Seven Toes Down is modal, in 7/8 time, with people dancing in bare feet on bare ground, so vigorously that it kicks up the dust. En Pointe opens with a lovely waltz, then it focuses in on the tiny, delicate movements of a ballerina high up on her toes. Muddy Boots is big strong guys, covered with dirt from a hard day of work, practicing one-upmanship. Different players have the chance to show what they can do, surrounded by their friends. Then we catch another glimpse of the ballerina before closing playfully with Seven Toes Down. Difficulty Level: 4 (Advanced) See composer website for audio sample.
