Erwin Schulhoff (1894 1942) was one of the most original personalities on the music scene of the early 20th century. His persecution and ostracism by the National Socialists led to his being forgotten for a time though in recentdecades the extraordinary quality of his music has been rediscovered. It was inspired by jazz Dada atonal music and socialist realism. Schulhoff’s Hot-Sonata of 1930 displays the influence of jazz not least through the use ofthe saxophone as solo instrument but also in its pithy rhythms its glitzy harmonies and its use of playing techniques such as glissandi. The Hot-Sonata is published here for the first-ever time in an Urtext edition. Iteliminates numerous mistakes found in the first edition that had been reprinted up to the present day. All the relevant sources were consulted for this edition: the autograph an engraver’s copy Schulhoff’s own copy of thepublished work and further personal documents such as letters and contracts. The saxophonist Frank Lunte from Berlin was engaged to edit this volume. He is an acknowledged expert in this repertoire and in the history of thesaxophone especially its history in 1930s Berlin.

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. / Piano

Symphony No. 3 (1972-1975) by Per NørgÃ¥rd. Per NørgÃ¥rd's third symphony commissioned by The Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra (conductor Herbert Blomstedt) was premiered in Copenhagen in 1976 and received wide attention. The work gives comprehensive expression to a new realm of musical experience which the composer began to explore toward the end of the 1960s. While the first period in NørgÃ¥rds production in the 1050s represents his personal interpretation of the Nordic music tradition – evidenced for example in his “Piano Sonata No. 2” (1957) and“Constellations” for chamber orchestra (1958) – and the second period in the 1960s saw him working with serial techniques musical collage and a new sound-palette - especially in the orchestral works “Iris” (196-67) and “Luna” (1967) – with “Voyage into the Golden Screen” (1968) NørgÃ¥rd arrived at a new compositional technique based on the use of a special form of a so-called “infinity series” a principle of musical motion to be applied to all kinds of scales (chromatic diatonic et cetera). It is characteristic that that NørgÃ¥rd in the 1970s chose to cultivate diatonic infinity series already evident in the mythological opera “Gilgamesh” (1971-72). Thus the Symphony No. 3 begun directly after the opera combines the infinity series major and minor scales the partial series of natural harmonics and “sub-harmonics” (NørgÃ¥rds terminology) with rhythmic patterns based on the Golden Section (the Golden Mean) in a nexus of synchronous yet disparate elements which serve the composers vision of musical coherence.. The works which followed the symphony – the operas “Siddharta” (1975-79) and “The Divine Circus” (1981-82) and Symphony No. 4 (1981) – usher a new

George Frederick Handel's (1685-1759) Sonata No. 6 is well-known to the Violin repertoire. Therefore when French saxophonist Marcel Mule (1901-2001) arranged the popular piece for the Saxophone in 1951 it was very well-received. The Sonata No. 6 is made up of four movements: Adagio Allegro Largo and Allegro non troppo. Handel's Sonata No. 6 was first published in 1732. Mule's editions ensure that the Saxophone part contains the articulation phrasing and breath marks necessary to the instrument. For all classical saxophonists this Mule arrangement of the popular SonataNo. 6 is essential.

Jind ich Feld's Sonata For Soprano Saxophone And Piano is still regularly performed by virtuoso Saxophonists. Composed in 1989 the Sonata is elaborate and quirky and successfully exploits many extended techniques on the instrument similar to the composer's Sonata for Alto Saxophone. Born in Prague Feld (1925-2007) studied Violin and Viola with his parents before studying at the Conservatory and Academy of Music of his native city. His compositions predominantly instrumental soon became popular being performed all over the world. As reflected in his Sonata For Soprano Saxophone AndPiano Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czech musical tradition but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of three movements 1. Molto moderato 2. Scherzo and 3. Finale. Each movement of the Sonata present different challenges from fast staccato semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical slurred passages. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced soprano saxophonists.

Per Viola E Pianoforte. Par CALLIGARIS SERGIO. Sergio Calligaris was born in Rosario (1941), Argentina. He is one of the last musicians to incarnate the traditional 19th century figure of pianist, teacher and composer, inaugurated at the beginning of the 19th century by Muzio Clementi and carriedon after that by a sequence of famous names that the history of music has handed down to us. As a pianist, he began to give public performances at the age of 13, making his debut in his home town Rosario. Following this success, he embarked upon an extremely busy career as a soloist, giving numerous recitals in Buenos Aires and other citiesin Argentina. He continued to take advanced lessons with eminent exponents of the most prestigious international piano schools. In 1974 he became an Italian citizen and settled in Rome, teaching piano as principal instrument at the S. Pietro a Majella StateConservatory in Naples, the Luisa DAnnunzio Conservatory in Pescara and the Alfredo Casella Conservatory in Aquila. As a composer, he began - at just 9 years of age - to study in the rigorous school of Paul Hindemith, under the guidance of Father Luis Machado, from whom he inherited a love of counterpoint and a strong taste for harmony. He took a diploma incomposition, counterpoint and fugue at the age of 16 at the Amigos del Arte Society in Rosario, going on in 1964 to do an advanced course in 12-tone counterpoint at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Composed by J. S. Bach for Flute and Piano this edition of 4th Sonata was arranged for Alto Saxophone in E flat and Piano by Marcel Mule. Its difficulty would fit the skills and abilities of intermediate players. In terms of composition this piece was created in three different sections: the first one is divided into three parts (Andante with a tempo at 96° Allegro at 116° and Adagio at 72°) followed by Minuet and Minuet 2. Marcel Mule (1901-2001) is one of the greatest French saxophonists renowned worldwide for his work on the classical Saxophone repertoire. He was teaching his students how toobtain a good quality of sound and believed it was dependent on the embouchure the emission the mastery of vibrato and thus of breathing. He wrote different methods that focus on technique articulation and tone productions such as 'Scale and Arpeggios' (in three books) 'Daily exercises after Terschack' or '30 Great exercises or studies after Soussmann' (in two books) among others.

Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Edison Demisov was composed in1970 and covers three movements. The first part Allegro shows serialism; the second Lento focuses on new techniques; with the last one Allegro Moderato reminiscent of Jazz music. This strong>Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano dedicated to the French Saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix was strongly influenced by Western European music and requires a certain level of ability (intermediate to advanced players) especially for the second movement. Edison Demisov (1929-1996) was a Russian Siberian-born composer specialising in alternative /non-conformist Soviet music. Strongly influenced by the West he was often criticised by his peers. He gained international recognition for the composition 'Le soleil des Incas' (1964) and wrote numerous concerti sonatas and other pieces.

No. 5-7. Par ULLMANN VIKTOR. Ullman‘s seven Piano Sonatas were written between 1936 and 1944. Though rediscovered as recently as 1990, they are now available in a number of recordings. Neo-classical in approach, the piano writing and the use of polytonality places them closer to Skriabin and Prokofiev than to the works of Ullman‘s teachers Arnold Schoenberg and Alois Hába – this applies also to the Piano Concerto, written during the same period. The numerous quotes from Mozart, Wagner, Mahler, and Dukas to folksongs and tunes from operettas are particulary interesting in this context./ Répertoire / Piano
