John McCabe: String Quartet No.7 - Summer Eves: String Quartet: Score
String Quartet: 2 violins, viola, cello

(+)
Commissioned by the Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts Limited with funds provided by the Arts Council of Wales for premiere in August 2012 by the Carducci String Quartet in St. Andrew?s Church Presteigne.Composer's Note'Some years ago I noted down the opening theme of what I anticipated would be a relatively Classical string quartet ?Classical? in the sense of the forms adopted plus perhaps a predominantly lyrical tone of voice. The commission for this work from the Presteigne Festival for their 30th anniversary in 2012 gave me the opportunity of putting into practice this long-held idea. It isdedicated to the Festival and to the Carducci Quartet whose career as much-admired friends and colleagues I have greatly enjoyed. The only break with ?classical? tradition is that there are five movements instead of four with two Scherzi as the second and third though both these are very short and contrasting. I found myself listening to Haydn?s string quartets a lot before and during the composition of this work and I hope the spirit of his delight in writing for this medium is echoed in my own music. The opening movement is in sonata form unusually for me and lyricism is I hope the basis of it though there is a good deal of activity at times. The Scherzo light and marked by frequently-changing rhythms is followed by an equally short but ferocious Perpetuum mobile marked Wild und rasch (one of my favourite German tempo markings). The fourth movement is an intense Adagio in which a single phrase uttered strongly in unison is gradually transformed into gentle diatonic chords before the close intermingled with cadenzas for cello for viola and for the two violins together. The finale (a Rondo) resumes the classical tone of the first movement but apart from one dance-like episode it builds up a fair head of steam towards a final Presto which however ascends slows and quietens towards a gentle summer sky at dusk.'

Cyril Scott was an English composer writer and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works which include two mature symphonies three operas three Piano concertos concertos for Violin Cello Oboe and Harpsichord several overtures four oratorios as well as a mass of chamber music. While less appreciated during his lifetime it is Scott’s late works(written between 1950 and his death) that are the most individual with their ever-shifting harmoniccolours and wayward inflections of phrase and mood capturing perfectly the way the mind shifts backwards and forwards between reminiscence regrets and self-assertion.Composed in 1961 for Flute and Piano and premiered by William Bennett and Margaret Norman on November 9 of that year Sonata For Flute is perfect example of the genius of Scott’s late works.

(+)
In 1920 Maurice Ravel was asked by his publisher Durand to contribute to an issue of La Revue Musicale dedicated to Claude Debussy. A supplement included the first movement of Ravel?s Sonata as well as works contributed by Debussy?s friends Stravinsky Satie Dukas Bartok and de Falla to name only a few. This 1st movement of Ravel?s Sonata of which the autograph is lost then developed into a large scale four movement chamber music work utilizing a more modern music vocabulary than found in almost any other Ravel composition. Bärenreiter?s scholarly-critical edition the first ever of this masterpiece presents the work in two performing scores. It contains anintroduction on the history of the work reflecting Ravel?s work and rehearsals with violinist Hélène Jourdan-Morhange and cellist Maurice Maréchal. Sources for this new edition include the engraved copy the personal autograph scores (with earlier versions of some passages) which were used to rehearse the work and the first edition scores with emendations by Jourdan-Morhange and Maréchal. Included in the appendix are the original fingerings by the performers which are not found in the first edition. They reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. First Urtext edition of this workTwo performing scores (format 25 5 x 32 5 cm)The violoncello part does not allow for page turns in the first movement; therefore the edition includes an additional violoncello part in small print presenting the entire first movement on a double page without a page turnInformative introduction to the genesis of the work (Ger/Eng/Fr)Critical commentary with facsimiles and appendices

(+)
Jindrich Feld's Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano is frequently performed by virtuoso Saxophonists. Composed in 1989-90 the Sonata is elaborate and quirky and successfully exploits many extended techniques on the instrument. Born in Prague Feld (1925-2007) studied Violin and Viola with his parents before studying at the Conservatory and Academy of Music of his native city. His compositions predominantly instrumental soon became popular being performed all over the world. As reflected in his Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czechmusical tradition but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of four movements 1. Allegro ritmico 2. Adagio/Bells of liberty 3. Allegro vivo/Scherzo and 4. Allegro con fuoco. Each movement of the Sonata presents different challenges from fast staccato semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical slurred passages. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced saxophonists.

With Piano Pieces In C Minor Woo 52 And 53. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven's Sonata Op. 10/1 was composed over a long period between 1795 and 1798 in which the composer could not decide for quite some time whether to go for four or three movements. Beethoven considered two piano pieces in C minor (WoO 52 and 53) as potential third movements before the finale until he eventually decided in favour of a three-movement version without minuet or scherzo. The present edition for the first time contains the two eliminated pieces in the appendix, not in order for the sonata to be now played with 4 or even 5 movements, but as a suggestion for the planning of a piano recital in which both the three-movement Sonata Op. 10/1 and the two piano pieces can be performed together./ Répertoire / Piano

(+)
The composer says: Several musical threads led to my writing this piece of music to celebrate my friend Matanya Ophee?s (AKA MO) 80th birthday - a life lived with the guitar. Jelly Roll Morton once asserted: ?In fact, if you can't manage to put tinges of Spanish in your tunes, you will never be able to get the right seasoning; I call it, for jazz.? Over the last couple of years I moved back to Jelly Roll Morton?s city: New Orleans, home of my adolescence and reacquainted myself with the tinges of Spanish in its rich musical heritage. One of these pieces was the Mardi Gras Mambo, an iconic song frequently played during Mardi Gras and, in David Newman?s reworking of the lyrics, at the New Orleans Saints football games as the Super Bowl Mambo. Uncited sources on both Wikipedia and Essortment say the word Mambo means ?conversation with the gods? in Kikongo, the language spoken by Central African slaves taken to Cuba where it became the name for a musical form and a dance style that developed originally in Cuba in the able hands of Cachao?s (Bassist Orestes Lopez) tune: Danzon Mambo. This rhythmic style became famous in the 1950?s following its use in dance bands in Mexico and through New Orleans to the United States. The infectiousness of the New Orleans re-interpretation of the Mambo?s ostinato bass line and the reaction of people who are readily moved to dance when they hear it spoke to me of dance and celebration. This led me to choose some of this piece?s characteristics and title for this piece: Mambo for MO. As we have progressed on the instrument, some of us may have encountered the four-chord descending minor chord progression known as the Andalusian cadence: i - VII - VI - V in many different genres and guises. After all, it appears in Ray Charles? Hit the Road, Jack, the verse on Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys, Walk, Don?t Run by The Ventures, Runaway by Del Shannon and in that great work arranged and embraced by the Guitar: J.S. Bach?s Chaconne from the Partita in D minor for solo violin, BWV 1004. This bass line derived from a Latin American musical style as reinterpreted in New Orleans, a chord progression that evokes the Flamenco Music of Spain, and my impressions of the sinuous lines of people dancing the Second Line in the streets of New Orleans at Mardi Gras led me to this synthesis as a tribute to a man who has contributed so much in his lifelong efforts for the guitar, its history and lore on the occasion of his birthday! Happy Birthday, Matanya! Carlos Barrientos was born on June 25, 1954 in Tela, Honduras. He began his formal music studies at the National Music Conservatory in Guatemala City, Guatemala C.A. His training with Maestro Elias Barreiro, Director of Guitar Studies at Tulane University, was supplemented with Master Classes with Manuel Barrueco, Leo Brouwer, Juan Mercadal, Michael Newman, Tommy Tedesco and Carlos Barbosa-Lima. Violin Sonatas Volume II-Volume II of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonatas for Piano and Violin includes Violin sonatas No. 6-10 - Beethoven wrote 10 sonatas for Violin and Piano in total (No. 1-5 can be found inVolume I of this edition). Out of these 5 sonatas Violin Sonata No. 9 (commonly known as the ‘Kreutzer Sonata’) is the most widely known because of its demanding Violin part unusual length of slightlyless than 40 minutes (with the other four averaging at ca. 23 minutes) and emotional scope - while the first movement is predominantly furious the second is meditative and the third joyous and exuberant. This Urtextedition provides you with a clear and accurate representation of the composer's original intentions. Two copies of the Violin score are included as separate inserts as well as a preface in German English and French.

Carl Reinecke: Undine - Sonata For Piano and Flute Op. 167: Flute and Accomp.:
Flute and Piano
G. Henle

(+)
From among Reinecke?s abundant oeuvre, a very few works have from the beginning maintained their position in the concert repertoire. First and foremost among these is the Flute Sonata op. 167 with the sobriquet ?Undine?, composed in 1882 and inspired by the eponymous fairy tale by Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué about the ill-fated love of a mermaid. It is not, however, meant programmatically, but rather, like Schumann?s poetic titles, as a framework of associations for this highly romantic, in places very virtuoso sonata in traditional, four-movement form. As the autograph is lost, the printed editions form the basis for the new critical edition of this sonata, which is solidly anchored in the flute repertoire and is now finally available as a Henle Urtext edition.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Fantasy And Sonata In C Minor For Piano K.475/457:
Piano solo

(+)
Fantasy and Sonata in C Minor are essentially two separate works but are invariably performed as part of a set having originally been paired together by the composer in what was an unusual coupling of works. The formal freedom of the fantasia allowed Mozart to create a particularly expressive example of keyboard music that is in stark contrast to the limitations of the more traditional forms. The Fantasia in C Minor K.475 unfolds in four parts each change of tempo signalling the introduction and development of new material. It is a wonderful and pleasing work with an unmistakable improvisational undertone that draws on Mozart’s most inventive andcreative talents displaying his supreme and consummate ability as composer and pianist. Sonata in C Minor K.457 as is typical of his compositions in C minor is a personal work but not sombre or morose as there is intensity and a sense of drama. A moving and expressive work that is accentuated by the preceding Fantasia. Published within the Signature Series a series of authoritative performing editions of standard keyboard works prepared from original sources by leading scholars including informative introductions and performance notes and forms part of the ABRSM syllabus.

Par TIPPETT MICHAEL SIR. Like Robert Schumann who often favoured the horn, Sir Michael Tippett who died on 8 January 1998 makes full use of the instrument‘s tonal possibilities in this work. He translated the Romantic genre of horn quartet into a modern tonal language: “All movements contain characteristic calls and triad arpeggios. Sometimes the call itself is the theme, as in the fugue. Sometimes the calls are the accompaniment to a solo, such as in the nocturne.” (Tippett) The forms of the four movements, however, are traditional. The structure of the ?rst movement is reminiscent of the form of a strophic song. The second movement is an allegro, the slow third a nocturne in the traditional ABA form. And ?nally the last movement is a capricious fugue./ Répertoire / 4 Cors
