Trio SKU: BR.EB-9474 Composed by Christian Mason. Chamber music; stapled. Edition Breitkopf. New music (post-2000). Sheet Music. Composed 2008/12. 28 pages. Duration 8'. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 9474. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-9474). ISBN 9790004189542. 9 x 12 inches. The present piece is a wind trio reduction of my ensemble piece In Time Entwined, In Space Enlaced (2008), which was in turn an expansion of an original trio for bass flute, cor anglais and viola. Throughout the piece, the three instruments find themselves entangled in various contrapuntal and heterophonic webs. Though their individual identities are generally distinct -- by virtue of their timbral differences -- they seek to blur their boundaries, forging relationships through shared material as they attempt to merge with one another. I was inspired by the surreal expression of love in David Gascoyne's poem Antennae:The timeless sleepers tangled in the bedIn the midst of the sonorous island, aloneThe tongue between the teethThe river between the sandsLove in my hand like laceYour hand enlaced with mine.(Christian Mason, 2012)

Chamber Music Piano 1, Piano 2, Piano 3 SKU: PR.110418060 For 3 Pianos, 12 Hands. Composed by James Matheson. Premiered by James Giles, Matt Hagle, George Lepauw, Daniel Schlosberg, Anthony Molinaro and Mischa Zupko, piano, at the International Beethoven Festival, Chicago, IL. Contemporary. Set of performance scores. With Standard notation. Composed 2012. 32 pages. Duration 4:30. Theodore Presser Company #110-41806. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.110418060). UPC: 680160620197. 9 x 12 inches. Bagatelle was commissioned for the International Beethoven Project's 2012 Beethoven Festival, in which thematic material centered around Beethoven's Third Symphony Eroica. In this short, energetic work, one of the final sections of the Eroica Symphony is recast as a sonorous cloud of sound that coalesces into music that is spirited, rhythmically charged, and thrilling. In a concert premiere of 18 new bagatelles by various composers, it was Matheson's Bagatelle that music critic John von Rhein found of particular interest. The piece alternated material from the final movement of the Eroica with spectral and torrential washes of sound-think Franz Liszt playing Beethoven on hallucinogens. String quartet SKU: FG.55011-775-4 Composed by Alex Freeman. Classical, contemporary. Score & parts. Fennica Gehrman #55011-775-4. Published by Fennica Gehrman (FG.55011-775-4). ISBN 9790550117754. Alex Freeman found initial inspiration for his string quartet (2015) in a series of photographs a geologist friend showed him of en échelon veins in rock formations. The open strings punctuated with pizzicato unisons that begin the single-movement work call to mind something crystalline and shimmering, which is immediately infused with tumbling lyrical lines in something of a rapid caccia technique throughout. The middle of the work becomes more suspended in slower material loosely based on a technique of prolation canon, comprises layers of free, expressive, lyrical, and even elegiac music moving at different speeds. As the work concludes, the materials converge in a rhythmically pulsating stasis and an almost chorale-like statement.
Duration: c. 13'
This product includes the score and the parts (A4 sized).
American-Finnish composer Alex Freeman (b.1972) has established himself among the foremost composers of choral music in Finland. A dedicated citizen of his musical community, a teacher, and a choral singer himself, he composes music that reflects an appreciation for a wide range of aesthetics and a passion for communicating with listeners and performers. In his choral works, in particular, we find music that aims to be sonorous, melodic, and resonant, but is always crafted to carefully avoid the cliches that can burden conventional tonality.
His instrumental works run the gamut: a cantata with orchestra based on poetry of Whitman; a significant body of solo piano works that reveal deep roots in everything from austere absolute music to soaring elegaic rhetoric (see Albany Records, Inner Voice); his chamber work Blueshift (Navona Records), which is a kind of paean to Reich and Adams in miniature; open-ended modular works, like various iterations of his Slow All Clocks for electronic media, solo clarinet, and mixed choirs of kanteles; and, recently, some new directions in microtonal music. $48.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

It so happens, time and again, that composers have written one work or another with great élan and then withheld it for a while. This is rather an exception with Sofia Gubaidulina. Nonetheless, several decades passed before the striking “Tatar Dance” for bayan and two double basses - unusual simply in view of its instrumental combination - could now be published as a printed edition. The “Tatar” Dance was composed in 1992, and it is thanks to the bayan virtuoso Friedrich Lips that he continued to speak to the composer about this wonderful composition and motivated her to have it published. Lips has now edited the work which is full of magnificent new sounds, with the double basses forming a sonorous counterpoint to the bayan. The world premiere of the chamber work “Tatar Dance” was given on 25 July 1992 by the soloists Elsbeth Moser (bayan), Wolfgang Güttler and Alexander Suslin (both double bass) in Hitzacker. Sofia Gubaidulina dedicated this work to Viktor Suslin. $25.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

Cousins String Quartet is concerned with the investigation of two qualities inherent in the medium of the string quartet: the sonorous potential of the instruments when they are played as one, and the melodic possibilities of each individual instrument. The structure could be likened to a journey across a tornado, each ring of the spiral generating greater and greater contrapuntal energy, interspersed with areas of relative homophonic calm, until the perfectly still centre of the storm is reached; only to be followed by further troughs and peaks as the opposite side of the spiral is crossed. $27.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Composed by Giuseppe Verdi. Arranged by Joachim Linckelmann. Gattungen vokal: Sacred vocal music. Full Score. 272 pages. Duration 90 minutes. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.2730800). ISBN 9790007254667. Latin. Verdi's Requiem is one of those works that almost every choir would like to have sung (at least) once. This arrangement for chamber orchestra means that smaller choirs and choirs with more limited space or financial means also now have the opportunity of performing this popular work. The scoring, with seven different wind and brass instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, and trombone) plus strings, timpani and bass drum, guarantees a wide dynamic range and a nuanced sonority. The four offstage trumpet parts can be played either as in the original, reduced to two trumpets, or even omitted. The relevant passages in the Tuba mirum also contain ossia passages for the orchestral brass, so that they can play their parts in performance without the need for offstage trumpets. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical to the original version, so the vocal score, vocal score XL, and chorus scores of the existing Carus edition can be used by the chorus. Michael Betzner-Brandt's successful arrangement of the Requiem (Carus 27.303/50) radically reduces the scoring to five instrumentalists and transfers the work to a different sonority, but in the arrangement by Joachim Linckelmann the symphonic character is retained.
*wind and brass parts reduced to just seven single instruments *maximum flexibility in the use of offstage trumpets *vocal scores and chorus scores from the original version can be used *carus plus: the work (original version) is available in carus music, the choir app, and in the practice series Carus Choir Coach. $185.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114405050). UPC: 680160008377. 11 x 14 inches. Although structurally it subdivides into five movements, the entire quartet emerges as one vast continuum. There are no formal breaks between movements. However, certain musical signposts can be discerned, associated with each of the movements' terminations and new beginnings. The opening movement, The Nostalgia of Clanging Bell Sonorities, begins floating on recurrent Bbs whose soft rhythmic flow slowly puts into motion strong undercurrents suggestive of the latent power of water... After several suggestions of tolling bells, the movement gradually fades into hushed tones of veiled and very distant sonorities. It uses a unique efffect, for the first time in a musical context, conveyed through the use of extra heavy practice mutes. The second movement, The Spill of Water , disengages itself from the first through its distinct contrast in tempo. Water moves fast, and when it splashes, it tends to run wildly. In this case, it happens to be bubbly water that gushes forth bodly... smashing across rocky shorlines. So, too, the music attempts to conjure such moods. At the end of this movement, a cello cadenza emerges, introducing an introspective type of melodicism. The third movement, The Poignancy of Memory, contains many silences as it tries to convey memory through fragmented remembrances much like often occur in our dream state. Progressing through several slowly building images, it gradually works itself into juxtaposition of musical images. Towards the movement's end, high harmonics are sounding in all four instruments while left hand pizzicato notes in the cello pluch the last remembrances of this central core. Almost imperceptibly, the viola assumes leadership as it dissolves into: The fourth movement, The Fluidity of Motion, which has mostly the viola, but also the cello, articulating lyrical statements against the sheets of sound conjured up by the two violins playing a flood of swirling figures, evokes a kind of static motion in spae. Here, the virtually imperceptible manner in which this hushed whisper continues incessantly, can suggest the potential fluidity with which movement may inch forward... Later into the fourth movement , two fairly extended solos by the second and then the first violins, lead to a kind of spontaneous dialogue among the four instrumentalists. Eventually, this musical conversation gets caught up in: The fifth movement's The Rush of Time, which opens with a hushed flurry of speed, precipitates the Finale. It generates, at first slowly, but then very swiftly, whole shifts of rhythmic fields that initially seem to conflict with one another. Ultimately, this use of 'psycho-rhythmics contributes to an on-rush of motion and time. Rhythmic changes are, at times, abruptly precipitated with but little or no preparation creating a kind of inevitability in forward thrust, while the movement rushes forward with a feeling of gradual and continuous acceleration. It gathers density as more and more notes are piled progressively upon successive beats. The attempt is to spark tension and ignite excitement by means of frenetic confrontations of dissimilitudes. Ultimately - with the help of time - these polarities centrifically spin out their own destinies with their accompanying fall-out and own inevitable resolutions. $130.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Chamber Music Flute(s) SKU: CF.WF230 The Art of Staying in Shape. Composed by Robert Stallman. With Standard notation. 144 pages. Carl Fischer Music #WF230. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.WF230). ISBN 9781491153741. UPC: 680160911240. Ever since he was honored 50 years ago as a top prize-winning graduate of New England Conservatory and a Fulbright scholar at the Paris Conservatoire, flutist Robert Stallman has drawn accolades around the world as a performer and recording artist who “dazzles because of his penetrating artistry†(Sunday Times/London). Also known internationally for superior flute editions, including numerous transcriptions that have greatly expanded the repertoire, Stallman now offers flutists an appealing collection of original melodic warm-ups. With The Flutist’s Handbook, he shares his fresh approach to staying in shape and maintaining his reputation for “consummate virtuosity†(Repertoire/France). PrefaceOne morning many years ago I opened my flute case and suddenly found myself questioning the wisdom of having scales and long tones come first in my practice session. Of course, these are essential to daily practice, but I wondered if there might be a better way to begin the day—with something more melodic and engaging, something to really inspire me.The Flutist’s Handbook emerged from a stream of musical ideas I began to jot down during practice sessions after that “aha†moment. As I worked with them, I noticed a more spontaneous interest in practicing. In fact I even looked forward to starting my day this way. As a result, my work on scales, arpeggios and long tones followed with more enjoyment and focused attention. In creating many of the détaché warm-ups found in Part I, I was drawn to the musical sequences of J. S. Bach, particularly those developed in his keyboard works. Bach had discovered the most satisfying musical patterns on which to build his music, so here was a treasure trove of invigorating melodic material. I also borrowed apt détaché passages from C.P.E. Bach, Schubert, Dvořák and others.Part II includes more musical quodlibets and echos in a collection of fifteen short melodies designed to open and center the tone, while encouraging full breath support. These melodies also concentrate on developing our sostenuto, or true legato playing—the foundation of a beautiful sonority and natural vocal expression. Except for final cadence notes, these warm-ups should be practiced without vibrato, to create an even and seamless instrument, bottom to top.All of these warm-ups are to be played forte and piano in every major key, proceeding chromatically by rising half-steps. Tempo indications are given in the headings, as are optional rhythmic and articulation variants. Suggested breath marks are in parentheses. The Handbook opens with détaché warm-ups for a good reason. It is vital to begin our practice with tonguing, as a clean attack is essential to producing a beautiful tone. Also, in working on tonguing (single, double, triple and tremolando) we stimulate and strengthen the jaw muscles that support the embouchure (which must remain supple and flexible). As we fine-tune these muscles, we gain tonal center and clarity, qualities that may elude us at the beginning of our practice. Of course, we also need to wake up the air stream and deepen our breath support. Once the tongue is alive and the tone is centered, we are ready to work further on our sonority with the melodic warm-ups in Part II.This book is meant for professionals, students and amateur flutists alike. I offer it to all as a companion that invites more pleasure and vitality into our daily practice. It is my firm belief that by aligning ourselves with our love of music and its energizing patterns each day—from the very first moment we pick up the instrument—we will bring more ease and focus into our lifelong task of staying in shape. This in turn will support the heightened inspiration we want to take into rehearsals and performances. Enjoy!—Robert StallmanMarblehead, MassachusettsApril 20, 2018. $32.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Full Score Chamber Ensemble (Score) SKU: HL.14028052 For Chamber Ensemble. Composed by Poul Ruders. Music Sales America. Classical. Score. Edition Wilhelm Hansen #KP00203. Published by Edition Wilhelm Hansen (HL.14028052). ISBN 9788759870853. Ruders writes: NIGHTSHADE is an instrumental dark-room, a grave-yard of low-pitched, tight-knitted, crawling chords sliced asunder by the cold extremely high positioned movements of the oboe and violin in particular: tones sustained to near-immobility and then scared into startling velocity, like geckoes on a Southern garden wall. Shades in the night are pale and gloomy phenomenons to behold; treacherous beauties in the mighty realm of invisibility and blackness. Belladonna (beautiful lady) is the morbid christening of that fearsome variety of flora: the deadly nightshade. The piece is, on one hand, a study in extreme sonorities; the infrequently used contrabass clarinet is being employed along with the contra-bassoon, forming the ultra-low foundation of the score and the bottom-register of the French horn and the trombone is set against the serene clarity of high violin and oboe. On the other hand, the piece is a tone-poem of sorts, on the various associations as they form within the mind of the individual listener when confronted with the very word NIGHTSHADE. Personally, I come to think of pale moonlight, tombstones, the compelling as well as frightening spell of a dark forest. A Study in black the piece has been called. $39.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
