It was only shortly after the 5th Symphony that Beethoven completed the Pastoral Symphony. The two formed a complementary work pair, consigned together to a patron in June 1808, publicly premiered in Vienna in December 1808, and published by Breitkopf & Hartel in the spring of 1809. During this period, Beethoven revised the symphony several times. Only in the course of preparing for publication did Beethoven send Breitkopf & Hartel a letter, together with a list of corrections, disclosing the title that he desired, Pastoral Symphony or recollections of country life. More an expression of feeling than painting. The Pastoral with its tone-painting elements gives evidence of Beethoven's closeness to nature, characterizing in five movements his various experiences and images of nature. Based on the music text of the Beethoven Complete Edition, the new performance material of this recently published edition presents the current, authoritative status of Beethoven research for this work.

Brahms, Reger and the consequences Adolph Busch had already emigrated to the United States when he wrote the A-Major Clarinet Sonata . Shortly thereafter he revised the work once again until it was completed in its final form in spring 1941. Busch, a brilliant and sought-after solo violinist of the 1920s and 30s, concertized regularly in England and had become friends there with the clarinetist Reginald Kells, to whom he also dedicated the piece in three movements. Demanding in its musical idiom and no doubt inspired by the expressive playing of his friend, the sonata evidences a strong proximity to the works of Brahms and Reger. A lyrical B flat minor in the central section allows us to float like shadows on the way into a dream.The song text is a collage. The first verse, by the Baroque poet Christian Hoffmann von Hoffmannswaldau, is concerned with the vanitas motif: the world, and everything which seems beautiful to us, is ephemeral. The second and third verses were written in the 18th century by Johann Gottfried Herder. Here, the poet expounds the view that real life does not take place in the world and that people's mathematical abilities are insufficient to measure space and time.

Francesco Durante's Magnificat in B flat major is one of his most important works and also one of the most siginifcant settings of the Magnficat text, here in cantata form. This work displays a mastery of the polyhonic style and though the use of certain pre-classical, modern elements its various forms never sound archaic, rather the work presents a synthesis leading to a unique style. For a performance during the Christmas season, Christmas hymns can be inserted between each of the individual movements. The world of the animalsalways plays on ones imagination. In Animal Kingdom, William Vean has portrayed a number of animals in a special manner:

Kevin Kangaroo - The jumping character of this animal can be heard in different voices. The swing style alsoemphasizes the characteristic movements of the kangaroo. Playing in swing style can be practised by using scales.

Eddy Elephant - For some of his smaller fellow fauna friends this can be quite an ordeal, but for Eduard (Eddy for friendsand intimates) it is his daily walk.

Baldrick Bat - Baldrick the Bat is a mysterious character. This can be heard in the fast moving valves and keys, accompanied by special effects in the percussion section.

Curtis Camel - Curtisthe Camel trudges across the desert, feeling bored. The idea that the horizon will never change does not affect him anymore. He has accepted his fate. The distinctive tones from the gypsy scale provide the suitable oriental sounds.

BettyButterfly - Butterfly Betty elegantly, and without worries, flutters from flower to flower in the garden. Her motto: Carpe Diem (Seize the Day). Betty is a one-day butterfly.

Marvin Monkey - A swing monkey stirs up the feelings. Evenmembers of the orchestra will look like real monkeys. How about your audience?

Each part has its own difficulties and challenges.
Important in the first part is playing in swing (triplets feeling). This can be practised usingscales.
In the second part ensemble playing and balance are important.
In Baldrick additional information on the effects that have to be played might be useful. New sounds are, of course, welcome.
Curtis the Camel introduces thegypsy scale. Additional explanation of the use of the scale might be useful. Key changes are interesting in this part. A slight accent on the first beat of the bar will add to the charm of this part.
Marvin the Monkey brings back the swingrhythm that was introduced in the first part, alternated by a straight part with attention to chromatics and articulation.

A story teller will definitely be an asset when performing this composition.
