Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) est considéré comme l'un des plus grands compositeurs italiens du début du XXe siècle. Respighi a composé plusieurs opéras, des ballets, quelques cantates, des œuvres de musique de chambre et des mélodies pour orgue et piano. Son style unique a été profondément influencé par les impressionnistes français, par Rimski-Korsakov et Richard Strauss. Toutefois, il est surtout connu pour son triptyque symphonique Fontane di Roma (Les Fontaines de Rome), Pini di Roma (Les Pins de Rome) et Feste Romane (Fêtes romaines). Dans le poème symphonique Les Pins de Rome, il se montre un maître de l’orchestration par son utilisation de timbrestrès variés et captivants. La composition comprend quatre mouvements et s’ouvre par les Pins de la Villa Borghèse, où des enfants jouent près des arbres. Après cette introduction, Respighi passe brusquement aux Pins près d’une catacombe : les pins projettent leur ombre sur l’entrée d'une catacombe d’où s'élève un hymne grégorien mélancolique. Les Pins du Janicule, est un nocturne où les pins se profilent au clair d'une lune sereine. Dans les Pins de la Via Appia (Voie Apienne), le jour se lève : La campagne tragique est veillée par des pins solitaires. La musique ressuscite la vision glorieuse d'une armée consulaire en marche vers le Capitole.

In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded Eduard Keurvels in 1919 as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement, utilizing an impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism. Though mostly known for writing larger scale works during his life, this Concertstuk for oboe and piano, composed towards the end of his life came at a time when he unexpectedly because to compose chamber music. In addition to this work for oboe, he composed a solo piece for clarinet, as well as four string quartets during his final years.

Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald (Tales from the Vienna Woods) is an iconic Viennese composition and is regularly performed by the Vienna Philharmonic at the New Year’s Concert. As with the original, the arrangement includes a zither part, whichin this arrangement can be played either by double reeds or by saxophones.

Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald (Verhalen uit het Weense woud) is een icoon van de Weense muziek, het werk wordt geregeld uitgevoerd tijdens de nieuwjaarsconcerten van de Wiener Philharmoniker. Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald (Histoires de la forêt viennoise), valse composée par Johann Strauss fils en 1868, est un chef-d’oeuvre qui rend hommage la beauté de la forêt viennoise, souvent interprété lors du concert du Nouvel An donnépar l’Orchestre philharmonique de Vienne et mettant en avant la cithare. Cette transcription permet de la remplacer par un ensemble d’instruments anche double ou de saxophones.

Seguendo l’originale, l’arrangiamento di Tohru Takahashi presenta anche una parte percetra che può essere sostituita da strumenti ad ancia doppia o dai sax.
