The third volume in the Songs and Choral Works Series of the Reger Complete Works (RWA) contains the songs Max Reger composed (almost entirely in Munich) between 1901 and February 1903. With these compositions, Reger not only entered into direct competition with the so-called “Munich School” around Ludwig Thuille, Max von Schillings, and Richard Strauss, but also attempted to establish himself more widely as an uncompromising renewer of the genre. The songs contrast with the Romantic song aesthetic through their forward-looking declamatory style and they display a treatment of the piano which goes far beyond conventional song accompaniment.

In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). This is supported by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature, and as a Hybrid Edition is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques.

Conversational Solfege is a curriculum for developing music literacy skills. It is organized around increasingly complex rhythmic and melodic content. Each new rhythmic or melodic element is discovered first in patterns and then reinforced with folk songs, rhymes, and classical examples. This CD provides 29 classical selections referenced in Conversational Solfege Level 3. These examples provide reinforcement for emerging literacy skills, and they also enable students to listen to wonderful classical examples with greater attention. Listening to classical music can be challenging for elementary students. With nothing to hang onto, the many notes can be too much to comprehend and attention soon wanes. But with minimal literacy skills, students will have enough musical information to discover that classical music can be accessible and appealing. In the booklet, timings are given for each selection. The portions of the music that are readable by the students are reproduced. Karol Szymanowski (1882-1932) is regarded as one of the most important Polish composers since Chopin. He received his formative musical training in Warsaw where he lived for many years and was also director of the Conservatoire and Music Academy. His compositional oeuvre comprises a large variety of styles: Szymanowski first leaned towards Chopin and Scriabin, then studied Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinsky, finally finding a style in which he combined impressionism and expressionism. His 'Mythes' for violin and piano from 1915 fell in a transitional period, turning away from late German Romanticism.
