And we're off! Otto M. Schwarz takes us on a tour of his native Austria in this six-movement work. Passing by the great landmarks of this beautiful country we're travelling by narrow-gauge railway, by car and finally by high-speed train. Fabled castles, famous gardens in Salzburg (the Mirabell Gardens) and Vienna or the Schloss Esterházy, the palace in Burgenland, where Joseph Haydn worked for many years, are just as important as the mode of transport. As the saying goes, the journey is its own reward. Movements include: The Journey, On the Road, Castles and Legends, Mirabell Gardens, Schloss Esterhazy, High Speed Train.

My setting of this well-known prayer is largely based on a piece of 16th-century visual art of the same name,Salvator mundi, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. Though many artists have created similar paintings depicting Christ in this fashion, Leonardo’s is of the small minority in which the orb that Christ holds in his left hand lacks any sort of ornamentation or indeed any kind of religious symbol at all. The orb, as it appears in other depictions, is referred to as a globus cruciger (cross-bearing orb). This term does not apply in this instance, as the orb lacks a cross, existing purely as an unblemished globe, calm and serene, mirroring the expression that is present on Christ’s face. This piece should be sung in largely the same way that the painting appears on the canvas: subdued and reverent. The dynamic contrasts in measures 22–28 represent a very human supplication to Christ, but they should not be overstated or dramatic in any way. Such is the case with the entire work, it is a very introspective take on the prayer’s text, and as such it should feel quietly restrained and reflective throughout. The piece ends with four double-barred repetitions of the word “Deus,” representing the four points of the cross. Listen to The Same Stream perform Salvator Mundi from Songs of the Questioner.

The pieces contained in the present volume provide a link between the easy, dance-like movements contained in the Anna Magdalena Bach Book and the two-part inventions. The text corresponds very largely to that of the original source; missing dynamic and tempo markings must be supplied by the player himself in accordance with the character of each piece. The training of the student's feeling for style must begin here, his technical capabilities being taken into account. The occasionally simplified ornaments can also be treated in this manner. The fingerings are intended as suggestions for small hands; they must, of course, be adapted to the particular player's hands, taking tempo and phrasing into consideration. The editor has attempted to solve the problems of phrasing and articulation by means of his own suggestions, but without cluttering the text too much. Various alternative solutions (as indicated in no. 3) are possible, and should - insofar as they make musical sense- be realized in practice. By independently choosing a phrasing and writing it into the music himself, the student improves his unterstanding of the polyphonic structure and the form. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1977.

Sometimes a familiar story can be told so well it demands to stand on its own. Nathaniel Fryml's artistry is the extraordinary type that takes simplicity and makes it elegant, even astonishing. O Little Town of Bethlehem; is there, as are quotes from 17 other beloved carols, but the music is actually new and beautiful. The choral writing is exquisite and the piano part evocative. The violin, which is optional, is written for a well-trained player but worth every note. A worthy piece for community and college choirs, medium difficulty.

A simple folk-style song that works wonderfully for strings and depicts a traveling troubadour and his trained pet entertaining for their food. The broken-chord accompaniment imitates the organ grinder as he sings while the marmot performs tricks for the listeners. It is a beautiful melody that moves between A minor and C major. Both upper strings and cellos take turns on the melody!

Antony Herschel Hill's Ave Verum Corpus for unaccompanied SATB is one of a number of liturgical works by this gifted composer. Written for Prebendary John Pearce and the choir of St Simon Zelotes, Chelsea, London, Hill's setting projects the awe and mystery of the text through a rich variety of harmony that particularly exploits the lower registers of the individual voices to great effect. If you have a really good choir, take advantage of this and buy it. For pure musicianship little else has equalled it recently; the sense of architecture is superb, the climaxes are clean, controlled and never contrived, and the final section, 'miserere mei', uses a wonderfully restrained sense of chromaticism. What a magic piece.

Crossing Borders is a new progressive series of volumes designed to introduce the developing pianist to a broad range of popular music, including jazz, blues, rock and pop. Most of the pieces are original, written by Remo Vinciguerra, and the series as a whole is intended to be used as a lively and entertaining parallel to the standard classical training. The rhythmic, melodic and harmonic fingerprints of a wide range of popular styles are gradually introduced, yet a classical spirit or framework can also be recognised in much of the music. In accordance with the relative freedom typical of popular music, many interpretative decisions, especially concerning dynamics and pedalling, are left to the players. Tempo indications are for guidance only, and need not be taken too literally.
