Le premier mouvement est consacré à la Statue de la Liberté située à New York. Le second fait écho aux 4 Anges Trompettistes qui ornent le clocher d?une église de Boston (U.S.A.). Grieg Holberg Suite (From Holberg\'s Time) Op.40 (Full Score) Suite in the Olden Style for String Orchestra To celebrate the 200th birthday of the playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), a statue was erected in his honour in 1884. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a ?powdered wig piece? (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg?s era ? a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian ?air? and an impetuous ?rigaudon?. Later Grieg arranged his ?Suite in the Olden Style? for string orchestra. This version became one of his most popular compositions. This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the ‘Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare’ (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the ‘Sint Martinusfanfare’ from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. Thecontrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement Allegro Molto Vivace’ could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis the crown on the pastoral work of Martin Bishop of Tours Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle.

One hundred years after the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886 John Williams was commissioned to compose a fanfare for the re-dedication ceremony. At this event Mr. Williams led the Boston Pops Orchestra in the firstperformance of this work which the composer described as ?a group of American airs and tunes of my own invention.?

In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695 no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar?s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer?s death in 1984 he composed the ?CeremonialMarch?. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar?s catalogue of works the characteristic ?Pomp and Circumstances? marches and decided to add his own sixth march to the existing collection.
