Pyotr IlyichTchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) is one of the best-known Russian composers in the West. His Waltz of the Flowers was been expertly arranged here by Graham Lyons.

'Six Pieces' Op. 19 is the first collection of piano pieces by Tchaikovsky which contributed significantly to his growing renown as most important Russian composer apart from Anton Rubinstein. Famous contemporary pianists like Nikolai Rubinstein and Hans von Bülow performed Rêverie du soir (Op. 19 No. 1) or Thème original et variations (No. 6) in their concerts in the 1870s. Commissioned by his Moscow publisher P. I. Jurgenson Six Pieces Op. 19 was composed by Tchaikovsky in the summer and autumn of 1873 i.e. during his time as professor of theory at the Moscow Conservatoire.Bülow had entered 'little changes' in his own copy of the first edition ofVariations Op. 19/6. There is however no documentary proof which of Bülow's changes Tchaikovsky eventually included in the Nouvelle édition revue et corrigée par l?auteur of Op. 19 published only in 1890. The present new edition therefore contains both versions of the Variations. Tchaikovsky's version of the first edition can be found in the appendix of the present volume Bülow's version expressly adopted by Tchaikovsky is presented together with Nos. 1-5 in the main text of the volume on the basis of the Nouvelle édition revue et corrigée par l?auteur from 1890.

This substantial volume contains all of the works that Tchaikovsky composed or arranged himself for Violin and Piano. The three larger Violin works opp. 26 34 and 42 which G. Henle Publishers also offers in individual practical editions are particularly well-known and popular. Tchaikovsky’s Violin works have long suffered under corrupt musical editions heavily reworked later by violinists all the more important therefore that the editor responsible for this Urtextedition is Russian Tchaikovsky specialist Alexander Komarov. He consulted all of the relevant original sources in international archives thereby guaranteeing the highest reliability of this musical text. Ingolf Turban a Violin virtuoso of the first order supplied stylistically appropriate markings in the Violin part.

Many of his operas such as ¬Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin) composed in 1877-1878 was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself but ?lyric scenes?. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise.After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz which can beconsidered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.

Pathétique-Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed the 6th Symphony between February and August 1893. The first performance in St Petersburg on 16 October 1893 at the First Symphony Concert of the Russian Musical Society was conducted by the composer. Tchaikovsky subsequently added the title Pathétique to the work. The first performance of the 6th Symphony in Moscow on 4 December 1893 after the death of the composer at the Second Symphony Concert of the Russian Musical Society was conducted by Vasili Safonov. The work is dedicated to Vladimir Lvovich Davidov the son of Tchaikovsky's sister. This edition prepared by the Russian composer and musicologist Viktor Ekimovsky is based onearlier publications and contains editorial comments with regard to printing errors and slips of the composer's pen.
