I compose a piece of music each year to be premiered by our annual University of Mobile High School Honor Band. A New Horizon was composed for the 2021 Honor Band during the most challenging season in memory. Taking place during the pandemic, the Honor Band was held outdoors under a large, open tent with distancing and health protocols in place. Though not ideal and full of challenges, it was a successful, memorable and thankfully healthy event. I felt that it was important to have a joyful, upbeat, hopeful piece of music to introduce to these students and this was the result. The title itself is a reminder that hope remains and we should keep our eyes on the future: a new horizon. The tempo should remain bright and steady, articulations are critically important and need to be accurately crisp. Dynamics are intended to be dramatic, so do not be afraid to overdo - particularly dynamic swells and subito changes.

Written during a residence at an artist community in the isolation of Wyoming, Postcards from Wyoming is an impression of the wilderness and beauty of the surrounding landscape and its inhabitants. Written for Pierre ensemble with percussion, Postcards includes High Plains Prairie (a harsh landscape which reveals glimpses of beauty upon closer examination), Call of the Wild (animals from snakes to horses and cows populate the environment), and The Solitude of Stars (capturing the infinite awe of the night sky).
In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming. Ucross is an artist colony that gives writers, composers, and visual artists the gift of time, space, and support to follow their artistic pursuits; we are provided with studio space, housing, and meals so that we can work almost continuously on our projects. I have been in residence at numerous artist colonies; however, nothing in my previous experiences prepared me for living in such isolated, wild country. Ucross is situated on a 20,000-acre cattle ranch at nearly 4,000 feet in elevation with fewer than 150 people living within the town. But what Clearmont lacks in population, it makes up for abundantly and spectacularly in wilderness and wildlife. Postcards from Wyoming presents three glimpses of what I found to be the most striking aspects of my residence. The first movement, High Plains Prairie, represents the conundrum that is a high elevation landscape: from afar, the eye sees little else than an unending and threadbare horizon. But as one inspects the land up close, the prairie bursts with color provided by sagebrush, grasses, insects, and creeks. The second movement, Call of the Wild, is a tribute to the wide range of animals that reside in the area. Deer, turkeys, and rabbits frequently passed outside of my studio window; cows and sheep lived in fields close by. Snakes, raccoons, and field mice also made guest appearances. While I'm thankful that I didn't see any predators (such as wolves), I became increasingly aware of the wildness of the animal population that surrounded my studio. The Solitude of Stars, the third and final movement, was inspired by the stunning nightly display of the heavens above. Without city lights dimming the night sky, countless stars shone brightly over the vast expanse of the prairie. Postcards from Wyoming was commissioned by the 2016 Utah Arts Festival. -S.G.

FOLKTALE was inspired by a tune I wrote some years ago for my dear friend, Dr. Vivien Bonazzi. A dedicated jazzlover who hails from Canberra, Australia, Vivien is an accomplished flutist and guitarist. (Her day job is at the NationalInstitute of Health in Maryland, as Program Director in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at the NationalHuman Genome Research Institute). Vivien commissioned me to write her a flute piece, something with a jazz feel anda written-out flute solo that would sound as if she were improvising. I enthusiastically agreed and wrote a tune titledAll Things Being Equal (a wink and a nod to the mathematical side of her personality!). I performed it only once, witha rhythm section, just before handing Vivien the sheet music. I never gave it a second thought until a couple of yearslater, when I found myself on a recording date with bass flutist extraordinaire, Wendy Stern. We so enjoyed working (andplaying!) together that day, that we vowed to join forces again as soon as possible. To speed up the process, I decided towrite us a duet. When I sat down to start composing, the melody I had previously written for Vivien kept popping intomy head. It finally occurred to me that it would make the perfect duet. So, after some major reworking of the score,FOLKTALE emerged, and I now have two very good friends to thank for its inspiration!

The life of railroad worker in the early days of expansion was lonely, and the need for music to bolster spirits was of great importance. The character singing 900 Miles is looking forward to being reunited with his family after being separated from them for considerable time. The Wayfaring Stranger is a prominent American folk and gospel song that reflects upon the journey through life. The character in that song contemplates better times with their family in the afterlife. Both of these songs speak to the idea of searching for something beyond the current situation in which that person finds themselves. The programmatic qualities of the work are essentially tied to the main folk songa900 Milesaand they evoke the idea of where the song found its origins. Beyond that, both songs connect each of us to the sense of belonging and family that are the human experience. While the music paints a picture of someone who is alone, that is not a feeling I want for any young student in our schools today. Band is one of the few places where students can discover that sense of belonging and find a surrogate family. While band is a family that might not always get along, they can reach a shared goal through diligent work, caring and encouragement. It was a pleasure completing Lonely Travelers for longtime friend, superb musician, excellent educator and dedicated leader in music education Dennis Emert. His students debuted the work at the 2020 PMEA State Conference. I am deeply appreciative of Dennis and the friendship, encouragement and perspective he shared with me over the years teaching in the same region. The opening flute, clarinet and alto saxophone part can be performed by the entire section or as a solo at the discretion of the director. The washboard and spoon part can be doubled as players allow. I would suggest bringing these students to the front of the stage to get the sound of both instruments to the audience. As the piece develops and Wayfaring Stranger is layered with 900 Miles, please remind your ensemble to play so they can hear each other, not so they are individually heard.
