Ha Shamayim is an original piece for orchestra that was inspired by photographs taken by the Hubble space telescope. Each section is inspired by one photo; the title of each section is the title that NASA gave to the photograph. The words Ha Shamayim are Hebrew for The Heavens. They are written in Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The words are also seen in Psalm 19. Section I: Warped Edge-On Galaxy ESO 510-G13 The piece begins in outer space with its glistening stars. Glissandi are used to depict the strange but beautiful warp seen in the photograph. Section II: Galaxy Fires at Neighboring Galaxy Suddenly the piece erupts as one galaxy fires blue gas at its neighbor. They engage in a cosmic battle. Section III: Youthful-looking Galaxy May Be an Adult The adolescent galaxy is personified by a humorous, gawky melody reminiscent of teenage boys who walk on feet that are still too big. Occasionally there is an argument with an authority figure, but the joy of exploring the universe quickly returns. Section IV: Star Birth in Galaxy M83 The dramatic photograph looks like a womb with veins. The music begins on one note, then it begins to explore the initial swelling and stretching. It morphs into an energetic fast theme, still growing. Ultimately it becomes glorious and expansive, like the new star. Section V: String of ‘Cosmic Pearls’ Surrounds an Exploding Star The first theme is a happy circle dance inspired by the circle of white dots in the photograph. The second theme is noble and joyful. It is reminiscent of the melody in the famous chorus in Haydn’s The Creation with the words from Psalm 19, The heavens are telling the glory of God. The music then has flashbacks to the earlier sections, and ends in triumph. The five sections in Ha Shamayim are continuous with no breaks. Mit Bachs 'Die Kunst der Fuge' habe ich mich seit vielen Jahren beschäftigt, weniger intensiv allerdings mit Fragen zum Fragment der Schlußfuge, zumal mit deren Vervollständigung - eine solche hätte ich früher kategorisch abgelehnt! [...] Erst die Ergänzung eines Kölner Klavierkollegen weckte in mir ein weitergehendes Interesse an dieser Problematik, vor allem der Umstand, daß er das Fragment nur mit den drei von Bach noch exponierten Themen vervollständigte und das Hauptthema des Werkes außen vor ließ. Seine Argumente: Das 1. Thema sei bereits eine Variante des Hauptthemas, und mit diesem und seiner gesonderten Exposition vor der Vereinigung aller vier Themen würde die Fuge viel zu lang. Daß es sich den drei anderen Themen nahtlos einfügt, halte er für Zufall (damit steht er nicht allein). Also ging ich daran, die gängigen Kombinationen der vier Themen zu erproben, zunächst nur, um ihren vierfachen Kontrapunkt zu demonstrieren. Damit aber war der Grundstein für eine Vervollständigung gelegt ... Nach insgesamt über dreijähriger Arbeit kann ich numehr nicht nur die Ergänzung selbst, sondern auch eine Studie zum Fragment und den damit verknüpften Problemen vorlegen. Meine Absicht kann kaum darin bestehen, mich mit Bach messen zu wollen.Vielmehr sollen Studie und Vervollständigung dazu dienen, Erkenntnisse über Bach im allgemeinen und 'Die Kunst der Fuge' sowie das Fragment im besonderen zugewinnen. For the first time this full-length work, with its richly contrasting style and dramatic action, is made accessible for performance in its original form. Ton Koopman reconstructed the parts which were missing from the source. Gerber a few years after Homilius's death in 1785. Gerber a few years after Homilius's death in 1785. As a result of the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the Seven Years War, the longtime Kreuzkantor, a pupil of Bach, performed his professional musical duties primarily at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The Passionskantate was well received and widely disseminated during the 18th and 19th centuries: Thanks to its popularity it was published in 1775 by Breitkopf as a full score - a rare honor, accorded to only one other Passion in the 18th century (Graun's Tod Jesu). The text describes the events of the Passion from a very personal point of view: The story focuses less on the actual events, then upon the feelings of the observers of these events. The subjective nature of the narrative is reflected in a very dramatically marked style of recitative, which presents a charming contrast to the expressive choral writing and the melodically accented arias. With the release of a new music editions and a SACD/CD the Passionskantate can now be rediscovered..
