Quilting, co-commissioned by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is my first stand alone work for orchestraand is loosely inspired by the American tradition of quilt making. I composed Quilting while living most of last year in Paris.During my time there, I thought a lot about what it means to compose symphonic music as a young American in the 21st century, when so many of the many masterworks which are programmed year in and out by orchestras across the country are European. I considered which artistic traditions defined the American 19th-century. I began to think of the American crafts-tradition of quilting as a foilto the high-art tradition of European orchestral composition. As the score for my new work began to take shape, I started thinking about the manuscript itself as an object, its vertical and horizontal planes create a kind of patterned geometry of their own. Visually the way a musical score is woven together like patchwork brought to mind quilts and the great American tradition of quilting. I imagined about how conducting an orchestra can feellike stitching a piece together, or sewing together a large number of musical ideas and musicians into a coherent and transcendent whole. Quilting was an integral part of American vernacular in the 18th and 19th centuries, the African-American quilting tradition is especially fascinating, and the quilts tell the stories of the women and communities who made them. The names of the quilt patterns themselves can have their own sense of narrative: 'jacobs ladder', 'drunkards path', 'solomon's puzzle', and (my favorite for its relevance to this piece) 'the road to California. - Bryce Dessner.

This memoir by Karl Dustman details his illustrious music industry career. Dustman began his professional career in music retail, leading to a sales forecaster for IBM. This opened the door to an executive position with Ludwig Drum Company where he spent 11 years in the marketing and educational departments. Executive-level stints with Gretsch, Hohner-Sonor-Sabian, Pearl, and Sonor gave Karl great insight into the percussion industry of the 1970's through the '80s, '90s, and into the current era, which he shares here in intimate detail. Striking out on his own as a marketing consultant, Karl worked not only with numerous music industry clients, but other businesses which further developed his skill set. Along the way, Karl authored numerous articles to share his percussion marketing expertise; many are included in the book's appendix. Also included are capsule histories of the Ludwig and Gretsch drum companies, and a good look at the inner workings of the Percussion Marketing Council for the past nineteen years. Pretty much anyone who has worked in the percussion industry over the last five decades has crossed paths with Karl Dustman. This book has been painstakingly written to provide insights and details to a career that spans over fifty-five years and continues to this day. The huge assortment of photos, internal documents, examples of the many different marketing, sales, promotional product launch materials, and massive trade show exhibits are included in each of the nine chapters. The personal stories and memorable moments illustrates an ever-changing industry filled with products, people, company mergers, brand acquisitions, and personal uncertainty for the future through five decades of career development. This could also serve as an industry textbook, illustrating the vast differences in the industry's retail, wholesale distribution, and manufacturing environments and workplaces. The journey is not limited to percussion but includes direct experiences with acoustic and digital pianos, electric, acoustic, and classical guitars, and even sound reinforcement.

3 Hymniske Ansatser (3 Hymnic Dispositions) for mixed choir SATB was composed by Per Norgard in 1985-86. The work consists of music composed to 3 poems, e.g.  Gunnar Ekelof 'Komposition (Composition),  Thoger Larsen 'Strandvalmue'('Beach Poppy')  Rainer Maria Rilke 'Die Parke'('The Parks')    Programme note Just as the three movements in their succession move from the sea (Ekelof), across the beach (Larsen) and into the country, to the parks (Rilke), in an analogous way each of the three movements in their point of departure is hymnic in character - but later on moves into the more varied and complex tone paths of the inner regions of themind.  3 Hymniske Ansatser (3 Hymnic Dispositions) is sung in Swedish (1. Komposition”, Gunnar Ekelof), in Danish (2. Strandvalmue”, Thoger Larsen) and in German (3. “Die Parke”, R.M. Rilke). The work could be performed in a programme with 'Prelude to Breaking', performed after this instrumental piece.  Per Norgard .

These Three Studies for Four-handed Piano were conceived of as a triptych whose unifying principles were to be the first-slow-fast movement order of the classical sonata and a symmetrical arrangement of tonalities with A major occupying the centre (F minor- A major- C minor). The term Studies alludes not so much to the 19th century pedagogical concept of pieces-as-exercises, as to an attempt to extend, investigate and study the possibilities of expression and texture of the piano for four hands.

The First Study is generated out of a single rhythmical motif whose development is modified by the intervention of two contrapuntual passages. A certain difficulty of execution arising from the need to cross hands in both sections of the keyboard conforms, in this case, to the traditional definition of study as an exercise focussed on a specific technical problem.

The second piece might be defined as a study of expression, being the explicit disposition of an ostinato accompaniment and two superior voices in conversation. I cannot help, listening to this study, being reminded of the texture of the slow Largo of Bach's Concerto for 2 violins and the manifest pathos of the Andante of Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto.

The Third Study is an exercise in rhythmical interpenetration in which continual changes of accentuation and metre are combined with passages of a light and mellifluous character.

It is a long-standing ambition of mine to supplement this work with three more triptychs and, so, complete a set of twelve studies for four-handed piano.
