Cheryl Frances-Hoad's Cloud Movements for Clarinet Violin and Piano. Cloud Move...(+)
Cheryl Frances-Hoad's Cloud Movements for Clarinet Violin and Piano. Cloud Movements was premiered by Ensemble Matisse on the 8th January 2015 at the Purcell Room (South Bank) as part of the Park Lane Young Artists New Year Series. 'On honeymoon in Tuscany I was determined to come home inspired by a great work of art on which to base my next commission. However it was watching the gradually changing shape of a cloud crossing the sky over a glass of Tuscan Red that eventually inspired this work: the idea influences the harmonic progressions in the piece which gradually metamorphose in shape following no particular rules. Backhome I started reading Naomi Klein's This Changes Everything about Climate Change and Capitalism. A chapter about 'Solar Radiation Management' a potentially hazardous proposed geoengineering practice in which sulfates are sprayed into the stratosphere (with the intention of reflecting sunlight back into space) influenced the piece as it progressed (in particular the final movement). The second and fourth movements are both canons - the first a three part canon the second a four part palindromic one (palindromes also feature in the final movement).' - Cheryl Frances-Hoad

The sheet music for contemporary virtuoso composer Nico Muhly's So Many Things arranged for Mezzo-Soprano and Piano Accompaniment. So Many Things was commissioned by a number of institutions including The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association UC Berkeley and Carnegie Hall. Lasting around 15 minutes Muhly has set three poems to this wonderful music including a lengthy narrative poem by Joyce Carol Oates and two translations of C.F. Cavafy by Daniel Mendelsohn. Muhly has brilliantly managed to take the emotion of the words and replicate them through music creating an astonishingly movingaccompaniment that not only reflects the lyrical sentiment but complements it. He states that the Piano moves between skittish and ostinato relentless but often pausing for an effective break in the musical narrative. With drones and palindromes from the Piano the Voice leaps between intervals creating a dynamism that creates uncertainty rather than resolve much like the poetry.

For three-part upper-voice choir. This is a witty and ingenious work scored for three-part upper voices (either unaccompanied or with instruments doubling the voices). The three riddles each explore ideas of balance and symmetry whether through the use of canon inversion or palindrome and the result is an intriguing and unusual concert piece
