Kingwood, preserved in several nineteenth-century shape-note tunebooks, has been traced to Asabel's Nettleton's Village Hymns of 1824. It is a swinging tune in 6/8 meter with a cautionary text of considerable quality. Although the air is in the tenor, there are interesting parts for all in keeping with Kingwood's singing-school origins. This is music of, for and by the people and may be sung heartily in the vernacular tradition.
