(+)
Twenty-Four Contemporary Pieces For Solo Piano includes a diverse selection of works from 16 of the world's leading composers. The 24 pieces featured in this collection represent the best of contemporary classical Piano music being composed today. As well as being a compilation of fantastically enjoyable compositions, the book also features interesting notes by each composer to accompany their music. These Contemporary Pieces For Solo Piano are at once accessible and musically inspiring, featuring some of the most talented and respected composers and their most definitive contributions to Piano music. Perhaps the biggest name included here is that of Ludovico Einaudi, whose wide reputation is a result of his masterful ability to pull at heartstrings, exemplified in his works Berlin Song, The Earth Prelude and Waterways, all of which are included here. Other giants of contemporary classical music are included in the collection, names like Philip Glass (Etude #11), Max Richter (Horizon Variations and Vladimir's Blues) and Hauschka, whose Can You Dance For Me, Early In The Park and Until It's Dawn perfectly encapsulate the emotive characteristics of all the pieces in this book. Composers like Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds, Dustin O'Halloran and Jóhann Jóhannsson evolved from a similar school that favours building atmosphere with hypnotic arpeggiation in composition, explaining why these composers are often used to great effect in film soundtracks.Other inclusions in Twenty-Four Contemporary Pieces For Solo Piano are simply too important to have left out, namely Nico Muhly's Hudson Cycle, two pieces by Joby Talbot as well as Tarik O'Regan's Lines Of Desire. The beauty of the songs here speak for themselves, but the composers have also written brief notes that preface each of the pieces, giving fascinating insight into either the composition itself or particular playing notes. Featuring some of the best compositions by the most respected and creative musicians writing today, the Twenty-Four Contemporary Pieces For Solo Piano within this collection are an exciting prospect for any pianist looking for some wonderfully inspiring music to learn and play. / Piano

Par SPARKE PHILIP. MASQUERADE was commissioned by Stadtmusik Willisau from Switzerland (Reto Güdel, conductor) to celebrate their 175th anniversary in 2003 and first performed by them in November that year. 1. OvertureThe first movement opens with a fanfare-like figure, featuring the brass, before the main them is introduced over staccato chords. After a short, syncopated interlude a legato theme is introduced in the tenor register and material is developed until the music slows temporarily. The opening theme returns and the ‘tenor’ tune is taken up by the whole band until the opening fanfare returns to close the movement. 2. ElegyThe slow movement opens intensely with a bare two-part theme, whichleads to a passionate chorale-style melody. A second theme is introduced and leads to a climax, a return of the chorale theme and a pianissimo repeat which again leads to a full-band climax. The two-part theme returns quietly to create a peaceful close. 3 InterludeA short movement which changes the mood to introduce:- 4 FinaleThree violent chords preface a lively syncopated opening theme. The trumpets introduce a second idea, which is treated fugally, and this in turn leads to the main melodic idea of the movement, over staccato chords. A contrasting subject is then introduced in the middle of the band, followed by echoes of the first movement fanfare. The opening theme returns and material is revisited until the opening fanfare returns in full to end the work triumphantly. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

(+)
Vier Seiten for violoncello is an attempt to present an event that in reality takes about two seconds in extreme slow motion, thus making even the micromovements visible or audible beyond the straight line of motion. When I composed the piece, the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna came to my mind again and again - an accident which was shown on TV in slow motion again and again until it became unbearable. The fast motion of the car immediately before the crash into a concrete wall, a motion which was no longer purposeful but out of control and which had the car pulled to and fro and from side to side, was followed by that crash. In this extreme slow motion, it is no longer shown as a crash but as the fast telescoping of carbon fibre, metal and human body parts. After this crash, as a postlude so to speak, everything suddenly slowed down, tyres and automotive particles floating in the air, the torso of the vehicle swinging until the motion stopped. It was not until this moment that I realized that the whole presentation of the incident had been accompanied by paralyzing silence. / Violoncelle

Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. Though Bohuslav Martinu produced a lot of didactic material for the piano, not all of it has been published and many delightful works have remained unknown. In this Easy Piano Pieces and Dances album, Martinu’s four-part piano cycle Quarter and Eighth Notes, composed in Paris in 1937, appears for the first time. It is devoted to changes of metre and tempo. The work, previously known only from his correspondence, was long considered lost until a copyist’s manuscript of it resurfaced in Brno in 2011. The jazz piece One Step, composed in 1921, is also made accessible here for the first time. It hitherto only existed in the composer’s autograph. Along with these two“discoveries”, this album contains the dance pieces that Martinu composed in Policka in the 1920s as well as the three-part cycle Christmas, composed in Paris in 1927. These were previously available in Compositions for Policka. Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Symphony No. 4 in A major 'Italian' (Version 1833) Urtext based on the Leipzig Mendelssohn Complete Edition (Series I Vol. 6) by Thomas Schmidt-Beste To all extents and purposes, Germany is the land of artists, wrote Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1831 while on his travels in Italy; but Italy, he added, is the land of art. Indeed, everywhere he went in Italy, the 22-year-old composer found impulses for his symphony (I have to save the work until I have seen Naples). But although the country fired his inspiration (It will be the merriest piece that I have ever written), he did not actually write the Italian Symphony there. This did not occur until early 1833, when Mendelssohn obtained a commission from London, where he then conducted the first performance in May 1833. Begun the following year, his revision of the piece remained fragmentary, and the composer no longer performed the work himself. The familiar London version thus represents the only closed form of the work which the composer presented to the public. This is the version of the Italian Symphony that is now appearing in the Breitkopf Urtext collection as a pre-print from the Complete Edition.

This beautiful text by contemporary poet Annie Finch is a love song describing the most beautiful and intimate images of love - 'warm hands,? 'gentlest sounds, touches and hours?. The text is set apart and isolated in sound, marked by gentle silences until halfway through the piece when the voices finally merge together, remaining that way - finally united, until the very end. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) A Cappella

Par MURAIL TRISTAN. Instead of considering the Piano as a percussion instrument (hammers hitting strings) Territoires De l'Oubli emphasises a different idiomatic characteristic of the instrument: a group of strings whose vibration is caused by sympathetic resonance or by direct action of the hammers. This is why the sustain pedal is depressed from the beginning until the very end of the piece: the work is written for the resonances, not for the attacks, which are considered as an inevitable but secondary phenomenon. Par MUSSORGSKY MODEST. The death in 1873 of Mussorgsky's friend Victor Hartmann was the stimulus for the initial creation of what was to become one of the most vividly colourful works in the orchestral repertoire. However, Mussorgsky's original piano version of Pictures At An Exhibition was not even published until 5 years after his death, and remained almost unknown until Ravel's masterful orchestration of it in 1922. From then on it has become favourite in the orchestral repertoire. This is the piano version of Mussorgsky’s famous work./ Répertoire / Piano

Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Amongst Rameau?s stage works which have come down to us in two main versions, such as ?Dardanus? (1739, 1744), ?Platée? (1745, 1749) and ?Zoroastre? (1749, 1756), none fell into oblivion for as long a period as ?Castor et Pollux?. After the work had been premiered in 1737, not until 1754 did Rameau decide to revise it. He asked his librettist ?Gentil-Bernard? to add an act to the tragedy and to give more weight to the brotherly friendship between Castor and Pollux. The main plot remains very similar to the one of 1737, aside from the fact that the sisters Télaïre and Phébé no longer are in love - the one with Castor the other with Pollux - but rather both with Castor which is the reason why Phébé is jealous of Télaïre. Already at the beginning of the first act Pollux relinquishes his love of Télaïre to the benefit of Castor. Castor, however, is killed by Linceus and finds himself in Hades. Pollux commits to saving his brother, sacrifices his immortality and declares his willingness to take Castor?s place in Hades so that his brother and Télaïre may be reunited. Jupiter, moved by this sacrifice, frees Pollux and bestows the couple immortality by giving them a place in the zodiac. Following the editorial principles of the ?Opera omnia Rameau? (and in contrast to the 1903 edition by August Chapuis issued within the old Rameau series), both versions of ?Castor et Pollux?, the version of 1737 (OOR IV.3) and the present version of 1754 (OOR IV.23), are published in two separate volumes in their entirety. Owing to the discovery of the original performance material, today preserved at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, the second version of 1754, which up until today was in the shadow of the 1737 version, can now be presented with its more tightly woven plot in all its vigor and dramatic momentum. This edition is enriched with twelve additions which enable the performance of the 1763-1764 version when the work was restaged. / Date parution : 2023-06-16/ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Par MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX. Mendelssohn’s setting of Psalm 98 was written in a few weeks to satisfy a commission in his new position as general music director of Prussia and was premiered by the Berlin Cathedral Choir on 1 January 1844. As he neither released the work forpublication nor produced a vocal score, his psalm setting did not appear in print until after his death. For this edition the authoritative Mendelssohn specialist John Michael Cooper drew primarily on the autograph score with its many subsequent corrections and amendments. In this way it differs from many other editions, which tend to treat theautograph as a subordinate source. Rounding off the edition are an informative Foreword and a detailed Critical Commentary. For Tenor, Alto, Three Female Voices et Piano. Par JANACEK LEOS. Janacek's intimate chamber-music drama about the passionate love of a simple farm boy for a beautiful gypsy girl is one of his great vocal masterpieces. This cycle of 22 songs for tenor (an alto and three female voices/female choir SSA are added in three numbers) was composed on a setting of poems that were published anonymously. It was not until 80 years later that their author was identified as the regional poet and writer Ozef Kalda. The cycle also contains theatrical elements, such as the alto entrance and exit cues and lighting effects. Composed in 1917-19, the Diary was premiered in Brno in 1921 from a manuscript prepared by Gustav Homola. The same manuscript served as abasis for the first edition which was issued by the Brno publisher Oldrich Pazdirek in 1921 as well as for this current first Urtext edition. for piano. Par ROTA NINO. This little waltz was not discovered until recently. The manuscript was passed from the dedicatee ('dedica: alla gentile Signora Giovanna Albano Sottomano per omaggio cordiale di Nino Rota Bari 12/7/1945') to her heirs and has remained in their possession ever since. This is why it has not been included in Rota's catalogue of works until now. Thus, it is all the more delightful that we can now publish this lively piano work for the first time and in doing so, add another piece to Rota's popular compositions for piano./ Répertoire / Piano

Par HEINIO MIKKO. Mikko Heiniö's Alla madre (2007) abandons the traditional virtuoso concerto concept: here a large orchestra engages in dialogue with a solo violin. The first movement is called Arrivo, ?Arrival?: the soloist literally arrives later, and by degrees, playing his/her first two solos offstage. Even then the orchestra continues to take the initiative for a long time. Not until the second movement, entitled Aura, ?Air or Wind?, does the initiative pass to the solo violin as it sets light to notes in the orchestra harmony like individual lamps. And not until the end of the second movement and the beginning of the third does the solo violin play completely on its own. The title of the first movement, ?Arrival?, underlines the event, the dramaturgy, whereas that of the second movement, ?Aura?, alludes to the texture and the shimmering space. The third movement is the most strongly emotional, as the name Carezza, ?Caress? suggests. This product includes the solo part and the piano reduction (B4 sized). The orchestral material is available from the publisher. The orchestration: 3(III picc)3(III ca)3(III=bcl)3(III=cfg)-4331-13-hp-str / Date parution : 2023-01-24/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

This is the bizarre and fantastic story of the boy Jacob who is transformed into a dwarf with a huge nose by an mysterious fairy. He spends seven years in the fairy’s palace, and during this time becomes a marvellous cook. The years go by as in a dream, and he does not imagine that he is in truth in the body of a loathsome dwarf. When he sees his parents again, they do not recognize him. He is mocked and rejected by everyone. But Jakob is not disheartened! He has to protect himself and survive setbacks and tests until at the end of the story he regains his true form.Zwerg Nase, based on the fairy tale of the same name by Wilhelm Hauff, is a story which gives courage and hope. It is a story which tells of self-confidence and friendship. There are the animals in the fairy’s palace, who stand alongside Zwerg Nase, and above all his girlfriend the goose Mimi who is herself an enchanted maiden and is saved from the oven by Zwerg Nase. Mimi knows which magic herb can give him back his true form. And everything turns out well in the end.The text and music convey the magical content of the fairy tale in a playful, yet convincing way. The libretto is catchy in its verse and rhyme, comic ideas alternate with touching and atmospheric passages.Classic and contemporary elements mix together in the setting, oriental borrowings stand alongside rhythmic pieces such as boogie-woogie, tango, and waltz. (+)
Edizione Critica F. Della Seta - Riduzione Per Canto E Pianoforte. Par ROSSINI GIOACHINO. Composed in 1818 on commission from an unknown individual in Lisbon, Adina was left to languish some years until its premiere in 1826, with a single performance in that city remaining virtually the only one on record until the opera's revival in 1963. The present vocal score is based on the critical edition of the orchestral full score prepared by Fabrizio Della Seta and published by the Fondazione Rossini of Pesaro in collaboration with Casa Ricordi. This Edition reconstructs for the first time the structure of the autograph score, which reflects the collective contributions of at least five different hands: having composed only four entirely new numbers and repurposed another three from Sigismondo, Rossini relied upon collaborators and copyists for the remainder of the music. Della Seta's detailed examination of this fundamental document (housed at the Fondazione Rossini) together with an informed assessment of the secondary sources, including a complete manuscript copy (housed at the British Library in London), various manuscript vocal parts with Rossini's autograph interventions (housed in the Royal Conservatory of Brussels), and the first edition of the vocal score published by Ricordi between 1855 and 1859, additionally reveals how the libretto printed in Lisbon for that single historic performance in 1826 differed substantially from the narrative disposition of the autograph score, with ample cuts and modifications (among those the suppression of the Aria Alì and the addition of a Coro). While neither attributable to Rossini himself nor pertaining to his original conceptual design of the opera, this Coro, the music of which survives in the first vocal score, is included as an Appendix to the edition. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Répertoire / Chant et Piano
