The Missa Dei Patris ZWV 19 was composed in 1740 and ranks among the later works of the Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. It opens an incompletely transmitted cycle of six masses which the composer himself designated as Missae ultimae.The musical text of the present conductor's score is based on that of Volume 93 of the Denkmaler edition Das Erbe deutscher Musik. The new piano vocal score has been edited by the reputable expert Andreas Kohs. Zelenka's artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting? I think that he still has several surprises for us. Charles Gounod, the 200th anniversary of whose birth falls in 2018, is known above all for his operas - Faust, Sapho, Romeo et Juliette, etc. But throughout his life Gounod was also a very religious man. As winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1839, he spent an extended period in the Holy City and subsequently devoted several years exclusively to writing sacred music. For a time he even thought of becoming a priest and signed his letters Abbe Ch. Gounod. As well as several masses - including the famous St Cecilia Mass - he composed numerous smaller works for various scorings for use in the liturgy and other church services. This collection contains 20 smaller sacred motets for 4-6-part mixed choir with organ or piano accompaniment, mostly ad libitum.

At the time Gervais composed his Grand Motet Miserere he held a post as director of the Chappell Royale in the Court of Louis XIV. This was one of the most important positions in music in France at that time. In addition to operas, he was highly regarded for compositions in this representative genre of sacred music until the end of the Ancien Regime. The setting of Psalm 50 consists of a succession of individual movements (choruses, soli, and duets through quartets), which, thanks to his experience with works for the stage, the composer was able shape dramatically not only with respect to the texts of individual movements, but also with a view to the large chorus which concludes the work. Marco Enrico Bossi is the best-known Italian composer of organ music and virtuoso from the turn of the 19th to 20th century. He also composed secular and sacred choral music, ranging from unaccompanied settings to large-scale oratorio. In his Missa pro defunctis op. 83 for mixed chorus with harmonium or organ accompaniment ad libitum, he encapsulated the aims of the Cecilian movement, the 19th century movement for the restoration of sacred music, in a convincing musical form. Bossi wrote a first version of the Requiem Mass in 1892/93 with a colleague; in 1906 he replaced the other composer's sections with his own. This final authorized version has now been published in a first critical edition. One of the essential sacred choral works by Bossi, this Requiem deserves to be rediscovered.

The Two Songs on American Poems were composed in late May and early June of 2011 by candlelight at my rustic waterfront cabin on a remote island off the northwest coast of Washington State. It was in this locale that I havecompleted a number of works over the years, including the Lux Aeterna, O Magnum Mysterium, Nocturnes, Canticle/O Vos Omnes and others. Prayer was written in memory of Michael Jasper Gioia, Dana and Mary Gioia's infant son, whosebrief life was tragically ended by SIDS.Mr. Gioia served as Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003-2010 and has authored several books of poems, numerous anthologies, articles, essays and two opera libretti. Amonghis many awards are the American Book Award and Presidential Citizens Medal. He currently holds the Judge Widney Chair of Poetry and Public Policy at the University of Southern California. Sure on this Shining Night was originallycomposed as a choral piece, the third movement of my Nocturnes on poems by Rilke, Neruda and Agee. Rod Gilfry, an international star of opera, recital and musical theater, premiered the mixed duet version with his daughter, Carin,in 2009. He is Professor of Vocal Studies at the USC Thornton School of Music. Both he and Mr. Gioia are national treasures. The Two Songs are designed as a pair but may be sung independently - when paired, Sure On This ShiningNight should begin immediatelyfollowing the final, sustained chord of Prayer with no break in between the songs. Both of these songs, premiered by Mr. Gilfry accompanied by the composer at a USC Visions & Voices tribute to DanaGioia on September 27, 2011, have their roots in the American musical theater and should be sung as such.

Anton Bruckner composed his Requiem in D minor at the young age of 24 in memory of a friend of his father's who was his patron. The work was greatly influenced by the Viennese classical style. He revised the work at the age of 70 in 1894 and held it in high regard throughout his career, even though his setting never enjoyed the popularity of similar works by Mozart or Verdi in the concert repertoire. The new edition now published represents the revised version, which can be regarded as a very personal, and at the same time impressive compositional testimony to Bruckner's artistic development on his journey towards becoming the great church musician and symphonist. Bruckner set the text of the Requiem Mass in a relatively compact form in terms of extent and scoring. The range of compositional colors stretches from Alpine-influenced writing for male voice choir (Hostias), to a five-part choral movement (Sanctus) and an unaccompanied movement (Requiem), to movements with choir and soloists. Christoph Willibald Gluck’s most popular opera “Orphe et Euridice†was performed in 1774 in Paris to sensational success. This new adaption followed the original Viennese version with Italian text that was first performed in 1762 under the direction of the composer in the Burgtheater. For the Paris version Gluck changed the leading part Orpheus from an alto to a tenor role and composed new recitatives. Both versions of Gluck’s reform drama are based on a libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi and revolutionised metastasian opera of the 18th century. Solo and choral music, instrumental music, pantomime and dance are all closely connected; the myth replaces a historical plot surrounded by intrigue; where there would have been a da-capo aria there are now simple song forms and coloratura is largely abandoned. These meticulously revised vocal scores of both versions are also newly set.

This piece was commissioned by the 'Concert Band Vlamertinge' and is a plea for peace: the title translates as 'Peace on Earth'. This is expressed by means of the vocal contribution expected from the performers. In various places of the piece you can recognize, the words 'Et In Terra Pax' - an appeal for peace - at first jumbled together but later more rhythmically structured, developing into synchronized massed voices.The work starts with a pentatonic theme based on the notes D, E, G, A and C (taken from 'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE' and the name of the conductor, NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe). A somewhat sad melody is developed during an orchestral climax which leads to the firstexplosion of sound (measure 62 onwards). Suddenly the opening measures are recaptured, albeit with a differently colored sound: the words 'Et In Terra Pax' bring the first movement to a close. A restless Allegro follows which abruptly stops and is replaced by a calming cho-rale-like passage. A narrator reads aloud the poem 'Sonnet' by the young poet Charles Hamilton Sorley, who was killed during World War I. This poem fittingly puts into words the cruelty and senselessness of war. After the expanded recapitulation of the allegro, the broad, almost infinite atmosphere of the beginning returns. Clarinet and English horn play the pentatonic opening theme once more, this time broadly, while the words 'Et In Terra... Pax' are repeated again and again by the rest of the orchestra.The composer has purposely avoided all forms of aggression and bombastic sounds regularly used in works about war. Fear of violence and destruction can be heard and felt during the allegro passages. The charged opening makes way in the end for hope: May peacefulness replace cruelty in everyday life, too. Es findet fur die Grausamkeit und Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges die passenden Worte. Nachdem das Allegro, diesmal mit einigen Ausbreitungen, wiederholt wird, kehrt die weite, beinahe unendliche Atmosphare des Beginns wieder zuruck. Klarinettenspielen zusammen mit einem Englischhorn das pentatonische Eingangsthema ein letztes Mal in ausgebreiteter Fassung, wobei das Et In Terra Pax' durch den Rest des Orchesters stets wiederholt wird.Der Komponist hat bewusst auf jegliche Form der Aggression oder bombastischen Vertonung, die in so vielen Werken uber den Krieg zu finden ist, vermieden. Dennoch ist die Angst vor Gewalt und Zerstorung vor allem in den Allegro-Passagen deutlich zuhoren und zu fuhlen. Am Ende macht die anfangliche Spannung jedoch der Hoffnung Platz: Moge die Friedlichkeit auch im taglichen Leben die Grausamkeit verbannen...

Today best known for his comic operas such as Zar und Zimmermann and Der Waffenschmied, Albert Lortzing was also a composer of sacred music.
