Johann Christian Bach was - as his father before him - only very seldom satisfied with the compositions that he put down on paper. Thus did this concerto too undergo many corrections/revisions by the composer and today consists of three movements of similar length. Although they were initially handed down separately at different locations, the motivic relationship as well as the melodic and figurative references among themselves clearly reveals the common identity of the three movements. Not only the final rondo is characterized by highly virtuoso passages, but both the slow, second movement as well as the introductory movement testify to youngest Bach son's compositional greatness, whose works later generations unjustly let almost fall into desuetude. While best known for his operas, Gioachina Rossini (1792-1868) did compose other music, among which is the large collection, PÉCHÉS DE VIEILLESSE ("SINS OF OLD AGE"). Composed of 150 vocal, chamber and solo piano pieces, the collection is grouped into fourteen albums, with the ordering of the works in each album not reflective of the dates or sequence of composition. Written as salon music, intended for performance in the privacy of Rossini's own drawing room, the entire collection was sold by Rossini's widow following his death in 1868. Vol. This edition of Vol. 7, titled ALBUM DE CHAUMIÈRE (COTTAGE ALBUM), is written for solo piano and includes twelve pieces across three books: M160791, M160891 and M160691. Edited by Sergio Cafaro.

The Missa Dei Patris ZWV 19 was composed in 1740 and ranks among the later works of the Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. It opens an incompletely transmitted cycle of six masses which the composer himself designated as Missae ultimae. The musical text of the present conductor's score is based on that of Volume 93 of the Denkmaler edition Das Erbe deutscher Musik. The new piano vocal score has been edited by the reputable expert Andreas Kohs. Zelenka's artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting? I think that he still has several surprises for us. (Schweizerische Musikzeitung)Zelenka's Masses - fine specimens of Baroque choral literature, some parts of which are set even more colorfully than in the corresponding compositions by Bach. Puccini's first known sacred work was composed during his school days at the Istituto Pacini in Lucca. It was first performed there in 1877. The text was a hymn to the Patron Saint of Lucca which was probably written by the composer himself. The work was so popular that by 1880 it had received three further performances, though it was also inserted in the Messa a 4 voci, after the Credo. Thereafter it disappeared from the music world and was only first rediscovered in the 1990s. Since, with the exception of the lack of a solo tenor in the piece, it is identical with this one in the Messa, for this reason it would seem only natural to perform these two works together. In the south German-Austrian region the Pastoral Mass of Johann Baptist Schiedermayr was regarded as one of the most well-known and beloved works in this genre. Engaging melodies, passages in thirds and sixths, and typical pastoral motives, such as horn calls and open fifths, the latter a reminder of the bourdon of bagpipes or a hurdy-gurdy, characterize the movements of the Mass. Lyrical sections, such as the Et incarnatus est, which is the center of Shiedermayr's setting of the Ordinary, alternate with festive passages in which trumpets and timpani brilliantly express the festive joy of Christmas. Herrmann Schroeder (1904-1984), one of the most important church music composers of the 20th century, wrote this Latin mass in 1961, i.e. at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marked a turning point in the field of church music: Masses in the respective native languages gained more and more acceptance, Gregorian chant faded into the background, stylistic features of popular music were also taken up in church music. Today, about 50 years after the beginning of the Council, one can see a return to Gregorian chant and polyphonic vocal music, and this is why even works such as Schroeder's Latin Missa melismatica arouse great interest again. The work takes the free intonation of the Gregorian chant as a starting-point and is enriched with wide-spun melodic arcs in elaborate polyphony, according to Schroeder's opinion that Gregorian chant and polyphony are particularly suitable for giving expression to the mysticism and irrationality of religious faith in the liturgy. A demanding work for good choirs, duration ca. 16 minutes.

During his most productive period as an opera composer, Camille Saint-Saens also wrote sacred works, among which his Oratorio de Noel has enjoyed great worldwide popularity. The colorful and opulently orchestrated Messe de Requiem was composed in 1878 in Bern. The composer dedicated it to his patron, Albert Libon. We have published this edition both with its larger orchestral forces and to enable perfomances of the Requiem in slightly reduced scoring (without losing the special characteristics of the work), in a version with a smaller orchestra consisting of 11 winds, two harps, organ and string instruments. The full score reproduces the Urtext of the Requiem with its original scoring, whereas the performance material is presented and conceived so to enable it to be performed either in the original orchestration or the version with reduced forces. Knowing the Score is a comprehensive approach to all aspects of music score reading and analysis that provides a sequential system for efficient and complete score study. Central to this book are more than 300 pages of music scores for band, orchestra, and choir from a wide range of sources. This book is the culmination of Dr. Robert Quebbeman's twenty years of teaching score reading at the university level. No single resource has ever contained such a systematic guide to score reading and analysis. Knowing the Score is divided into two parts. Part 1 covers score study steps, transposition and instrumentation, form graphs and phrasal analysis, music forms in both instrumental and vocal areas, and contemporary scores. Part 2 visually enhances this resource with printed pages from the scores of 84 works from the broad spectrum of classical literature. Of particular importance to this resource are several distinctive features: An emphasis on scores in multiple genres Inclusion of complex and atypical examples Detailed instructions on marking the score Interpretation Preparing musicals and operas Memorizing the score This resource is designed for graduate- or undergraduate-level courses, or for any conductors looking to improve their own score study skills. Knowing the Score is truly the first of its kind. Robert Quebbeman is Professor of Music Emeritus from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri.

Carus-Verlag is now publishing this early work by Camille Saint-Saens in a critical new edition. Among the sacred works by Saint-Saens there are just two settings of the mass: the Messe de Requiem op. 54 from his middle period (1878), and the Mass op. 4 dating from 1856. This was first performed on 21 April 1857. Camille Saint-Saens was a devoted follower of historicism as part of the reform movement in French church music. This is more evident in the mass published here than anywhere else. The model for this work is the unison Messe Royale by Henry DuMont (1610-1683). Saint-Saens combined its Gregorian style in a convincing manner with contemporary elements of Romantic composition, an expressive chromaticism, which determines the harmonic progression. Alongside the orchestral forces, the Grand Orgue plays an important role. Used as a solo instrument, it is an equal partner in the composition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2706000.

The hymn Nun ruhen alle Wälder (Now All Forests Rest), arranged by J.S. Bach (No. 6, So sei nun, Seele, deine, from Cantata BWV 13), is a guiding light throughout this four-movement composition. Pütz wrote this work as a musical outcry against the wilful, profit-driven destruction of our environment. When Bach used the word “ruhen†(to rest) over 350 years ago, it probably had a different nuance from the meaning it has today. At the beginning of the 21st century - the so-called age of progress - “nun ruhen alle Wälder†should mean “now all forests die†. Massive industrialization and globalization, coupled with pure greed, corruption, political scandals, an ever-wideninggap between the rich and poor, and other such senseless human actions, are pushing our blue planet closer and closer to the point of no return. This work is not intended to be a ranting accusation. It should remind us of the beauty and harmony that can exist all around us in nature, if we take care of it. Pütz hopes that this will, one day, help put a greater emphasis on humanity’s survival, and coexistence with nature rather than the exploitation described earlier. All four texts were created by Australian poet Graeme King, whose works were discovered by Pütz, by chance on the internet. Pütz was especially captivated by King’s clarity, and intrigued by the possibilities of adapting and melding the strong rhythmical structure of King’s writing with his own musical language. The four movements are as follows: 1. Tears of Nature 2. Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! 4. Tomorrow The world première of Four Earth Songs took place on 7 July 2009 at the 14th WASBE-Conference in Cincinnati (USA). This work is dedicated in friendship to Jouke Hoekstra, conductor, and the Frysk Fanfare Orkest (the Frisian Fanfare-Orchestra). Tears of Nature 2. Grrrevolution 3.Stand up! 4. Tears of Nature 2. Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! 4. Tomorrow Die offizielle Uraufführung von Four Earth Songs fand am 7. Juli 2009 statt, anlässlich der 14. WASBE-Konferenz in Cincinnati (USA). Grrrevolution 3. Stand up!

During Mendelssohns years of study with Zelter, the arrangement of chorales already played an important role, and he continued to be occupied with the protestant chorale throughout his symphonic and oratorical work. The break Bach's works in connection with the reperformance of the St. Matthew Passion led to a series of cantatas based on well-known chorale melodies for choir, instruments, and sometimes also for soloists. This cantata is a composition by Kuhnau for the first of the Christmas holidays [Christmas Day] and one of his most extensive works. It is underlaid with the free poetry of a hitherto anonymous author, not including any Bible or chorale texts. Though the dating has not yet been clarified, the structure - two recitative-aria pairings, framed by two magnificent tutti movements - indicates a genesis period within the last years of the composer's tenure as St. Thomas cantor in Leipzig. Additional indications are the triple use of the da capo form as well as the four-part vocal setting, partly differentiated in solo and tutti, taking the individual parts to the limits of their ambitus as was later customary with Johann Sebastian Bach.Particularly noteworthy are two details of the instrumentation: Firstly, there are three violin parts in the score, the first of which has to master an exceptionally virtuoso solo part. Secondly, in the third movement, Kuhnau expressly notates an obbligato organ solo part, not to be found in any of his other extant compositions. This virtuosic part also already foreshadows the later and far more famous obbligato organ parts in various Bach cantatas.

The vocal ouvre of Max Reger is quite comprehensive but only few of his more than 300 works have become firmly established in the concert repertoire. One song, however, was to become a real big seller: Maria Wiegenlied in which the composer had woven the old Christmas carol Joseph, lieber Joseph mein. Because of its huge success, Max Reger recommended to his publisher an instrumentation which he actually realized later: This gem for piano was turned into an atmospheric piece of pastoral music for voice and chamber orchestra.

The cantata cycle Die Tageszeiten, which was composed in Hamburg in 1757, is one of the outstanding late works of Georg Philipp Telemann. A Symphonie and four cantatas (each of which consists of an aria, accompagnato, aria, and chorus) portray, in a richly sensitive manner, the course of a day, beginning with the awakening of nature to the sunset. The poetry of Friedrich Wilhelm Zachariae and Telemann's music herald the beauty of nature, as well as the greatness of God revealed within it. Colorful instrumentation and pictures in sound corresponding to each time of the day, delicate compositional structure, and an ingenious realization of the text characterize this work, whose musical idiom is at times reminiscent of Haydn. Georg Kreisler was an admonisher, as strict as he was understanding, who saw his uncanny chances in language and music and used them to show his fellow human beings many possibilities of feeling and thinking. The first edition of Lieder and Chanson sums up all of these brilliantly evil-spirited works by Kreisler in several anthologies for voice and piano. Arranged in topics such as death and transience, surreal and philosophical or politics and public order, it offers good access to his work. Volume 7 completes the topics Homeland and Homelessness, Love, Eroticism and Sex and Discrimination, Intolerance and Anti-Semitism with songs like My Home Is in Yemen, The Love Letter, and The Alien..
