Setting Dylan Thomas's evocative yet humble poem 'In my craft or sullen art', Watkins conjures up a beautifully introspective introduction with the use of a simple quintuplet motif which is later transformed into a reflective coda. The main body of the work comprises of two contrasting settings of the poem separated by an extended passage for quartet alone giving the opportunity for some virtuosic and expressive string writing. Commissioned by Nicholas and Judith Goodison, 'In my craft or sullen art' is the final piece in a series of works they commissioned for voice and string quartet.

Many pieces with a classical cycle of movements lead to an examination of baroque counterpoint in the form of a fugue. Widmann's fifth string quartet, which closes his first cycle in this genre like a finale, wants to remain a deliberately tentative 'Versuch uber die Fuge', through it's dialogue with the singing voice's quotation from the Bible: 'That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out? - Vanitas vanitatum omnia vanitas!'.

Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him. The 4 Greek Songs were composed during the late fifties. The first and third movements capture the loose vocal style of the cantilena which is characteristic for the mediterranean region. The second and fourth movements are based on original dances which are typical for the modal nature of Greek music.
