Joby Talbot's Trumpet Concerto Desolation Wilderness was commissioned by the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. First performed on 28th October 2006 by the Royal LiverpoolPhilharmonic Orchestra at The Philharmonic Hall Liverpool with Alison Balsom (to whom the work is dedicated) as soloist and JoAnn Falletta conductor. The Turku Philharmonic Orchestra gave the Finnish premiére performances on23rd and 24th November 2006.The Piano reduction of Desolation Wilderness includes Trumpet parts in B flat and C. (Suitable for advanced players).'In Early November 2005 my family and some friends visited thehigh Sierra Nevada in Northern California. As on former trips to the area I was struck by the strange and disarming contrast between the bright sunshine perfect blue sky and warm mountain air of the Sierran autumn; and theoccasional icy chill - sudden drops of temperature when the sun vanished behind the mountains momentary glimpses through the trees of distant snow clouds over the highest peaks. Nowhere was this dichotomy more apparent than inthe vast area of forests lakes and mountains known as Desolation Wilderness. Here the twisted shapes of the aspens are testament to the destructive power of winter. Sure enough that night the first snows fell and the highmountain passes we'd just crossed were closed till spring.

This intermediate band work shares its title with a painting by Frederic Edwin Church of surpassing magnificence and brilliance. Church lived around the time of the Civil War and became known particularly for his striking portrayals of sunsets in the American landscape. The form consists of two main sections connected by an interlude providing both a macro and micro soundscape which reflects and celebrates Church's masterful canvas. Recorded birdsong accompaniment is available from the publisher for this work. Track 1 includes birdsong to be used at the beginning of the piece track 2 includes 15 seconds of silence and track 3 includes birdsong to be started atmeasure 72. The birdsong was recorded during many various wilderness walks mixed with special panning effects and produced with audio levels in mind. This means the birdsong will not require the use of outside volume adjustment during the performance. Grade 3. Duration ca. 9'.

Kalahari means wilderness and is really a place - the desert known as 'Botswana and Namibia'. This ensemble deals with the colors and delicate sounds that can be produced with percussion instruments. The bewildering vastness and perilousness of space can be imagined through the slow tempo and the use of a 12 tone row. The melodic material captures the indefinite tone center searching for a resting place and through the use of rhythmic phrases manages to find several points of relief. Imagine all sounds floating through time and wilderness.

Par FREEMAN ALEX. Alex Freeman?s Under the arching heavens: A Requiem (2018) was commissioned by Nils Schweckendiek and the Helsinki Chamber Choir to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Finnish civil war. Structured around the Latin liturgy of the mass for the dead, the work has a duration of more than an hour and also incorporates poems in Finnish, Swedish and English, reflecting both the specific reason for the commission and the universality of human suffering caused by war. In the non-liturgical texts chosen by Freeman, birds are a recurring image, as is that of a mother and child. The work ends with lines by Walt Whitman from a poem written in the aftermath of the American Civil War; lines described by the composer as ?some of the most comforting poetry in the English language.? Also included on the disc is A Wilderness of Sea, another recent choral piece which draws on works by Shakespeare, and the poet?s images of the sea, and of mankind?s relationship with it. Contents: I. Sydämeni laulu (Aleksis Kivi) II. Requiem aeternam III. Sequentia Dies irae Thrushes (Siegfried Sassoon) (Rex tremendae) Fientliga stjärnor (Edith Södergran) (Inter oves) IV. Sanctus V.
