Writing music is a labor of love for me.  My greatest joy is writing for performers whom I can be sure will not only deliver the notes accurately, but will project the meaning behind the notes.  To have performers in the wings who will bring their own imagination and deep understanding to a performance is an inspiration to me.  So I approached the writing of my Septet for the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio and the Miami String Quartet with great anticipation and pleasure.The fact that there is no model for such a Septet made the pre-composition process a most enjoyable exploration.  I liked the idea of having two strong ensemble personalities in the mix, and I thought that there must be some sort of challenging interchange at the outset.  The first movement, “Introductions,” (note the plural) starts with the piano trio throwing down the gauntlet and the string quartet entering quietly, but gradually (almost one by one) joining with the trio to make a true septet with multi-faceted relations.  The second movement, “Quasi una Passacaglia,” is based on a repeated phrase pattern.  Part of the formal design is a contrast between “Baroque” style performance and modern, more romantic ways of playing.  “Games,” the third movement, involves much playful interplay and the fourth movement, “Au revoir,” offers both reminiscence and farewell – not “good-bye,” but “until we meet again.”Throughout the piece, two of my persistent fascinations are explored: firstly, my interest in designing initial material that can evolve into large-scale form, and secondly, the pleasure I take in chamber music.  While the instrumentation of the Septet provides an almost orchestral palette and it was interesting to explore that, I love the idea of 7 artist-performers, each of whom can be a stunning virtuoso one moment and a thoughtful partner the next, and I relish the electricity that results form those shifting roles.

Francois Rabbath : Trombes d?eau for double bass (AL 30 748) The international fame of bass player Francois Rabbath acknowledges both the untiring teacher, author of a Nouvelle technique de la contrebasse, which a whole generation of students, desirous of freeing themselves from the fetters of traditional teaching, has taken up, and the inspired soloist, unsparing of himself in concert. For several years now, he has become accustomed to spending a few days in the summer in Kansas City (Missouri) to give master classes and a concert there, in the framework of the ?KC BassFest?. In July 2016, a moving surprise awaited him: on the stage of the American Jazz Museum a full-length portrait was unveiled, painted by local artist Ruthie Ingram from photos taken during his recital the previous year. By way of thanks, Rabbath dedicated Trombes d?eau to her, a solo piece lasting approximately six minutes, composed at the instigation of the International Society of Bassists for the 2017 edition of the International Double Bass Competition. Conceived as a series of short variations on an impassioned theme, the work emphasises evocative glissandi and explores double stopping and artificial harmonics without ever sacrificing the essential: the pleasure of musical expression..

Poul Ruders DIFERENCIASDIFERENCIAS was an old Spanish naming of musical compositions dealing with various techniques involving theme and variation. In modern Spanish it simply means differences. It's a nice title, however, and as to the present piece, a very fitting one indeed, because I wrote it especially to The Elsinore Players for their South America-tour in 1981.Actually nothing happens to the clipping of wellknown Bach (the first four bars of the chorale: jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, cantata No. 147), apart from the continuous changing of the succession-pattern of the 11 triplets and one duplet, the latter of which creates the recognizable 8/8 pattern amidst the flow of 9/8 spinnrad-rolling. To put it popularly, I haven't included anything that Bach does not have in the book himself.In addition to that, the unpredictable accents and various instrumental colours are the only means of differences. There are no modulations, no tricky polyphony, nothing but a long, thoughtful tasting the beautiful piece of tune. Well, of course, the chorale itself enters the picture in the very last section, but that is merely for me to have the pleasure of tossing it away again before it comes to a proper end.Finally, I really do think, that the Cage/Morgan poem quoted below, is the most suitable prologue to DIFERENCIAS:14 variations on 14 wordsI have nothing to say and I am saying it and that is poetry. Brass Quintet No. 1 was composed with great pleasure for the American Brass Quintet during the summer of 2000. It is cast in three movements. The work opens with a series of dramatic annunciatory gestures that serve to set into relief the faster, more angular, occasionally skittish heart of the movement. Both the beginning and the end of this core are framed by a long-held E-flat: two pillars that support and elevate the central part of the movement. The slow and quiet second movement can be viewed as a kind of lens or prism through which the music passes and changes. Pitches, then harmonies, are gradually brought into focus, then refracted - splintering off into more individual phrases (I was thinking here of the way light is split and bent by the prisms in our kitchen window). The end of the movement is characterized by a turn of the lens in the opposite direction as the music gradually blurs, then fades.   The final movement begins with a bit of imitative counterpoint. The character of the music is initially unabashed and proud, but is quickly foiled by increasing speed - a frantic kind of stretto! A more playful narrative follows, though; this occasionally studded with sharp, percussive chords. A brief choral-like section provides textural contrast before the recapitulation, and the familiar E-flat pillar from movement one ends the work.

Harri Wessman's Capriccio for wind ensemble (1989) puts the idea of caprice into practice in various ways. The inspiration for the title comes from the definition of 'capriccio' given by Michael Praetorius (1571-1621): If one attempts to treat a fugue according to his own pleasure and desire, and does not persist long in this, but rather turns soon to another fugue as it come to mind or occurs to him. The ten-minute-long work in three movements is scored for the same instruments as Mozart's Serenades for winds: 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon and 2 French horns. The outer movements are extremely folk-musicianly and must be played in a way that makes them brashly temperamental. They are separated by an Andantino, as a cor anglais and oboe dream unfolded on the velvety carpet of the other instruments. It was commissioned and premiered by the wind players of Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in April 1989.

This theoretical book is meant to improve contemporary jazz styles and techniques for all players of modern jazz. This study investigates jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock's seven albums recorded as a bandleader for Blue Note Records between 1962 and 1969. Recorded during Hancock's tenures with Donal Byrd and Miles Davis, his early works are highly mature musical conceptions, with all the major elements of Hancock's personal musical style already present. A mixed-methods approach combining sever forms of qualitative data analysis is used to identify the formal construction, the musical meanings, and the cultural significance of this body of music. The study surveys the thirty-six compositions that comprise these seven albums, and selects for in-depth analysis seven pieces that are proportionally representative of the formal characteristics of this larger repertoire: The Maze, The Pleasure Is Mine, Jack Rabbit, One Finger Snap, Little One, Toys, and I Have A Dream. Hancock's improvisations on these repretative compositions are transcribed, and each improvisation and composition is analyzed for its historical context and significance of each recording is examined through interviews with persons involved in the original recording process, as well as other jazz musicians and scholars with deep knowledge of Hancock's life, music and oeuvre. Aesthetic analyses, informed by the theories of of Kivy and Elliot, investigate the expressive or representational qualities of each composition, and examine how formal musical elements contribute to these expressive or representational qualities. Formal analyses examine elements of Hancock's compositional and improvisational style. The study concludes the Hancock's compositions and improvisations of the period exhibit a number of consistent style elements, such as sophisticated harmonic and rhythmic superimposition, that were very important influences on jazz pianists of the following generation.
