In a way it's the UR concept of the nature of the trumpet, an instrument capable of glorious panache as well as sublime, inward looking finesse. My piece is, as indicated in the title, a two fold composition in the form of two contrasting tone poems, each mirroring a fragment of original text, what one could call spiritual appetizers. At the end of chapter 8 of his high spirited Memoirs Hector Berlioz laments the murder of a man he admired, Prince Lichnowsky, who was stabbed to death in Frankfurt in September 1848 by German peasants: Oh, I must get out, walk, run, shout under the open sky! Now, there's a juicy bit of high strung romantic Sturm und Drang for you and the perfect motto for any awakening... Then night fall, Retraite, in which I've drawn upon the early, melancholy poem ALONE by Edgar Allan Poe and taken out one single line as 'subtitle' for this very hushed and withdrawn movement: And all I lov'd, I lov'd alone. Balkanya, a suite in three parts composed by Jan Van der Roost, was commissioned by the Music School of Gaillon - Aubevoye (France) for the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its creation. Jan Van der Roost dedicated the piece to the director of the school: Thierry Patel.As in his earlier work, Puszta, the composer makes no use of existing dances or themes in these three Balkan dances. This high-spirited suite takes its own approach to the folk music of the Balkan countries and is characterized by unique changes in tempo and spirit. Woodwinds, brass and percussion all have equal parts, making this suite attractive and enjoyable for the entire band.

Studio-Pop est une pièce en cinq mouvements. 1. Marching on a String (“En marchant sur une corde”), est une marche aux inflexions de rock qui affirme un rythme dynamique et moderne. 2. Dreaming of Summer (“Rêves d’été”) est écrit dans un chiffrage de mesure assez inhabituel dans la musique pop, la mesure 3/4. 3. Chicken Charley, est inspiré d’un souvenir de vacances sur la Côte d’Azur où le compositeur a été impressionné par un jeune Antillais vendeur de grillades de cuisses de poulet. La souplesse de ses mouvements transparaît dans la musique fortement dansante. 4. Candlelight (“ la lueur d’une bougie”) est une ballade gracieuse etmoderne, qui pourrait servir de toile de fond un dîner charmant. Les harmonisations sont passionnantes, mais trouvent toujours leur résolution dans une atmosphère romantique. 5. Discoteca vous plonge dans la vie nocturne d’une discothèque espagnole. Les accords typiquement espagnols et le rythme exaltant créent un finale exubérant.
