Trimbeka is a composition which owes its existence to the anniversary of music society “de Vlecke” in Gorredijk.
The name Gorredijk originates from “goor” or “gor”, which means : bog. Along the marshy peat ran a “dijk” (the Dutch word for dike), called the Gordijk. The name of the village resembles that of the home town of the composer himself, who comes from a town in Twente called Goor.
Three streams used to run through the area around Gorredijk. the historical name Trimbeets (Trimbeka), meaning three brooks, recalls this to mind.
Gorredijk was a flourishing “Vlecke”, i.e. large village, which was situated on an intersection of important connecting roads.The liveliness which this entailed is one of the distinctive elements in Trimbeka.
Furthermore, ominous sounds possibly refer to the dangers of the bog, while the resonance of the merriment during the annual fair can also be heard. The slow middle movement is an ode to the beautiful landscape surrounding the village.

Langs het moerassige veengebied liepeen dijk, die Gordijk werd genoemd. De naam van het dorp zorgde voor een band met de componist, die zelf afkomstig is uit het Twentse Goor.
In het gebied rondom Gorredijk stroomden vroeger drie beken. De historische naam Trimbeets(Trimbeka) herinnert daar nog aan. Gorredijk was een bloeiende ‘Vlecke’ (groot dorp) dat op een kruispunt lag van enkele belangrijke verbindingswegen. De levendigheid die dit met zich meebracht is één van de elementen diein Trimbeka terug te horen zijn. Voorts klinken er onheilspellende klanken die een verwijzing kunnen zijn naar het moerasgebied en is er vermaak tijdens de jaarlijkse markt.
Het langzame middendeel is een ode aan de prachtigenatuur.

The time had come to pay homage to someone who has been a faithful companion to me for 65 years and has witnessed of the joy and pain I have endured during the writing of all of my opuses, from 8 to 111. Today he still shares my fervor for jazz music and our wonderful complicity has been preserved on my piano solo album, The Last Call...?* which I recorded at the age of 93. This “someone is my instrument, an old grand piano over 100 years old: Blüthner No. 89293, model 190, constructed in 1910 in Leipzig, Germany, and to which I dedicate this Opus 111, the very last of my series of works for piano.
The Blüthner-Variationen were composed starting with a theme I had imagined during recording sessions which were done in my home. I named it Blues in Three, since it was related to the traditional harmonic chord progressions of the 12 bar blues, but in 3/4 time. The simple theme, repeated twice, generates 8 variations, each one requiring different pianistic means.
It is my hope that future performers will like the undeniably jazzy orientation of this work.

The Suite on Galician songs was written in 1899 and debuted on 31 October that same year, as part of a series of concerts organised by the Philharmonic Society of Barcelona at the Teatro Lirico, under the direction of Joan Lamote de Grignon.

The work is made up of four movements: I. Canto de la manana (‘Morning song'), also known as En la montana (‘In the mountains'), II. Danza Scherzo (Galician folk dance), III. Morrina (‘Homesickness') and IV. La Fiesta (finale). The entire composition is laced with Galician folk melodies, which serve as the pretext for developing a piece that is entirely descriptive and scenic in nature, by means of a meticulous and precise orchestration of great technical and folkloric interest. The work reveals not only Granados' great technical expertise as orchestrator, but also his imagination and intelligence when recreating the most distinctive sounds of traditional Galician folk music. He achieves this effect through a masterful use of instrumentation and experimentation throughout the 23 minute duration of this magnificent suite.

Konig Tejas Begrabnis (1899) shows how Schreker was influenced by his work with the Doblinger Mannergesangverein, of which he was a member. In this work he set a text by Felix Dahn from Dahn's historical novel, Ein Kampf um Rom (1876), which dealt with the collapse of the eastern Goths in the sixth century. The four-verse chorus, Gebt Raum, ihr Volker, unserm Schritt, is a verse taken from the last chapter of the novel. It describes how the last surviving Goths bring their fallen King Teja back to the mythical homeland of Thule. It is true, that the majestic work for four men's voice is accompanied by a large orchestra, however the orchestral means are used sparingly, whether to support the choir, to provide a background (with string tremoli and timpani), or to play fanfares with horns and trombones.
