Arranged for SSSAAATTTBBB the lyrics are from an anonymous writer of the fourteenth century and have been adapted by the composer. The composer says: 'Woefully arrayed is a supreme choral setting by William Cornysh Junior who died in 1523 of a text usually regarded as of anonymous composition though there have been some attributions to John Skelton. It is a thoughtful powerful meditation on Christ on the Cross and though Cornysh’s setting has remarkable intensity and contrapuntal artistry I felt a strong wish to add my own response to this fine text. The different versions of it have different verses that used by Cornysh has three verses (plus therefrain) while there are others with four or even five (one attributed to Skelton has five). I have chosen to restrict myself to the three used by Cornysh using my own adaptation of the modernised words which yet incorporates some archaisms a deliberate choice for reasons of rhythm and verbal sound. This setting was commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival 2009 for Stile Antico to whom it is dedicated.''Difficult to perform but not difficult to listen to this 2009 Three Choirs Festival commission was first performed by Stile Antico who have since toured it. It is a heartfelt response to the fourteenth-century text passionate and anguished Christ is on the cross ‘woefully arrayed’. Although written for a secular choir it is a piece that could be sung by many cathedral and collegiate choirs: there is considerable doubling between the sixteen lines and a keyboard reduction to help the initial sorting out. Above all it is dramatic and would communicate directly to audiences if given a chance to hear it.' - James L Montgomer RSCM review

The singing of hymns and psalms in worship pre-dates Christianity. It is something that Jesus himself would have been familiar with in the temple and he certainly sang at the Last Supper; and after psalms had been sung they leftfor the Mount of Olives writes Matthew. Although none of the hymns on this recording can be dated from the time of our Lord we do start at the 7th century and the listener will hear many of the hymns most loved by today'sChristians. Some of the hymns are sung in the traditional manner; others have been newly arranged in a strikingly original way by Colin Mawby while the remainder are prefaced or followed by a short improvisation byMalcolm Archer. We feel that the recording amply demonstrates that hymn-singing is not just alive and well but flourishing beyond all measure.Malcolm Archer and Colin Mawby made the arrangements for this recording a factthat speaks for itself! Plenty of style.

This work is intended for performance on Good Friday during the 'Adoration of the Cross' ceremony of the Roman (Catholic) rite. The pitch of the sung parts is given by a member of the choir who after discreetly obtaining a tone with the aid of a tuning fork (or other such device) intones 'Popule meus' (and later 'Hagios') clearly on the notes indicated in each case. The recited 'Hagios' choruses should be performed as speech on diverse tones but in the natural speaking registers and in compliance with the rhythms and expression marks indicated. When reciting the word 'Sanctus' the consonant 'nc' should dominate. The two speech choruses develop into a 'Miserere nobis' sungon chance (random) tones with fixed time values (durations) the second time however culminating in completely free improvisation. At this point each singer sings 'Miserere nobis' independently of the others. The sentence may be repeated (ad lib.) with new variations until at a sign from the leader each initiated phrase is terminated in a diminuendo. These improvised sections should allow for considerable freedom of expression. They should be a result of spontaneous inspiration but should at all times be characterised by sacral dignity and should conform to the character of the work as a whole. All sections to be performed quasi attacca - keep the intensity. The reproaches are to be recited by a male chorister in his normal speaking register but quasi cantabile. It is left at the discretion of the performers to decide how many of the recited verses in the last section of the work are to be performed. When 'Popule' is sung for the last time the word 'mihi' should be uttered as a sigh.Bernhard Lewkovitch
