This poignant duet for voice and obligato is about remorse betrayal and the universal theme of suffering. It is one of the centre-pieces of the St. Matthew Passion and is sung after Peter has denied Christ betraying him to the authorities and to his Crucifixion.Gavotte and Tambourin. These two Dances reflect the political opposites of the French Revolution - one a popular dance for partying and celebration the other more courtly and considered a favourite of Marie Antoinette.Rondo all'Ongarese and Hungarian Dance.Hungarian Folk music is fiery and impassioned with virtuoso techniques of embellishment and improvisation. It has long been known that certain solo passages in Dvorák?s autograph score were actually written by the cellist Hanu? 2: Cello: Instrumental
Work Cello, Piano [Sheet music] Chester
This work for cello and orchestra was commissioned by the Strathclyde Regional C...(+)
This work for cello and orchestra was commissioned by the Strathclyde Regional Council and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. It is the second of ten concerti to be written for principal players of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Thefirst performance was given in February 1989 by William Conway and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by the composer. If Davies's Cello Concerto has already evoked comparisons with Elgar's that is perhaps an indicationnot only of its wealth of solo melody (there is hardly a page where the cello is not singing or if not that then dancing) and of its predominantly slow tempos but also of its musical stature. This second Strathclyde concertois a virtuoso piece for the entire ensemble which is used almost throughout as a clutch of soloists rather than as a tutti block. The general tone is one of passionate but interior dialogue especially in the opening Moderato andthe slow movement; and though the finale is more extrovert the work ends back in quietness and rumination. This book contains the solo cello part and a piano reduction of the orchestral score.

John McCabe's Nocturnal For Piano Quintet was composed in 1966 commissioned by the Park Lane Group London and first performed by the Lancaster University Ensemble. Duration: Approximately 13 minutes. Composers Note: The title of this work is a reference to John Donne's poem A Nocturnal upon St Lucie's Day the mood of which is reflected in the quintet. It falls into several movements played without a break: Introduction (Andante) setting forth the main thematic ideas of the music; Nocturne 1 (Allegro vivo) an agitated virtuoso scherzo-like section; a tripartite central part of the work consisting of two Cadenzasframing a brief Interlude the first Cadenza being largely for strings the second mainly for piano and the Interlude harking back to the feeling of the Introduction; Nocturne 2 (Andante molto) a slow piece gradually building to a unison theme on strings accompanied by a tolling piano background. This dies down to lead to an Epilogue ending with a final reference to the work's opening bars.

Esa-Pekka Salonen's YTA III for solo Cello. This work was written for Anssi Karttunen who gave the first performance at the Musiikin aika Festival Viitasaari Finland on 23rd July1987.'I began to work on the YTA series in 1982. The first piece was for solo alto flute the second for pianoand the third for cello. The title ‘Yta’ is a Swedish word meaning ‘surface’. I wanted to writeverydemanding virtuoso music where the surface is extremely busy but the formal process partly hiddenbehind the frenetic stream of fast gestures is considerably slower.I tried to imagine what happens to the famous moth thatcircles around a lamp in Skryabin’s Versla flamme after the wings have finally touched the flame. A series of gestures is introduced in thebeginning. Each gesture undergoes an individual development culminating in spasms beforedyingaway. YTA III is a study of the death of an organism; the music is violent and ugly.' - Esa-Pekka Salonen

A Song without Words for Violoncello Solo-Manfred Trojahn on the origin and titl...(+)
A Song without Words for Violoncello Solo-Manfred Trojahn on the origin and title of his impressive virtuoso solo work:'Admittedly I do not know if he had seagulls but since Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg he will not have gone through life without at least the impression of the cry of seagulls. Nor do I know if seagulls played any part in his life in Rome. I myself was astonished when one or two years ago in the Villa Massimo I was not exactly annoyed but disturbed by the strong rhythmical cry of seagulls. I was just about to write a bassoon solo when the seagulls started. Then the idea came to me that precisely this sequence of notes could serve as the basis of the work. And the sequence for thebassoon solo is in turn the basis of the piece for violoncello - this is how titles are born... Of course the violoncello meanders with virtuosic ease from the seagull motif to the 'elf-like' skittering brought to music by Mendelssohn and used time and again in his compositions finally becoming a cabaletta. Now cabalettas are not very representative of Mendelssohn but as I was composing I definitely wanted to put a cabaletta in this passage. I am sure Mendelssohn and I will easily agree on this especially since later justice is done to him in the rapid passages and of course in the tonal cadenza at the very end which is more indicative of his time than of mine ... isn't it?'

Piano Trio in B-flat major Op.133 for Piano Violin and Cello. One year after the completion of the 'Quartett-Konzert' Op.131 Louis Spohr finished his fourth Piano Trio Op.133 (1846). The first Piano Trio was greeted by the musical world with 'uncommon joy'. Whilst Spohr often wrote a final movement in virtuoso form in order to secure an effective ending the strength of the final movement in Op.133 lies in its pleasant lightness transparency and rhythmic pithiness. This Trio is earnestly recommended to professional artists and amateur musicians as a graceful chamber composition of the romantic period.

aus 'Les Contes d’Hoffmann'. Par OFFENBACH JACQUES / RIEM JULIAN (Arr.). This arrangement was written in Offenbach's anniversary year 2019 for the highly acclaimed CD (Sony) of the young star soloist Raphaela Gromes with chamber music for cello, the instrument the composer loved and played like none other. In addition to unknown, sometimes virtuoso, sometimes contemplative new discoveries, the album should not be without the master's hit melody: Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann, which begins with the immortal cello solo. And so Gromes' piano partner Julian Riem created this delightful new version for two cellos and piano especially for this CD. What some people do not know is that the melody actually comes from an earlier work by Offenbach, the romantic opera Les Fées du Rhin, where it is the musical hallmark of the eponymous nature spirits./ Répertoire / 2 Violoncelles et Piano
