The twelve
“London Symphonies”
comprise the sublime
final statement of
Haydn's symphonic oeuvre.
They were written for the
London impresario Johann
Peter Salomon, and Haydn
himself conducted their
premieres during his
lengthy stays in the
English metropolis in
1791/92 and 1794/95.
Hailing from 1791, the
Symphony in D major no.
96 numbers among the
first symphonies written
in and for London. The
epithet given to it by
posterity, “The
Miracle”, was bestowed
erroneously, for the
miracle - that no one was
injured when a chandelier
fell during a concert -
took place during a
performance of a
different Haydn symphony.
And yet it is a miracle
of musical esprit
nonetheless; from the
subtle relations between
the motives consisting of
broken triads that open
all four movements, to
the virtuosic shifts in
mood owing to surprising
harmonies, Haydn here
submits a prime example
of how he develops
musical ideas. This study
edition adopts the
musical text of the Haydn
Complete Edition, thereby
guaranteeing the highest
scholarly quality. An
informative preface and a
brief Critical Report
make the handy score an
ideal companion for all
current and soon-to-be
Haydn fans.

Arranged by Robert D.
Mccashin. String

Orchestra. Late in life,
Franz Joseph Haydn wrote
twelve symphonies known
as the "London" or
"Salomon" Symphonies.
They were composed for
and during his two visits
to London between 1791
and 1795. It was during
his first visit that he
was awarded the honorary
degree of Doctor of Music
from Oxford University
(1791). Haydn had been
invited to come to London
by Johann Peter Salomon,
London violinist and
concert impresario. The
invitation included the
writing and conducting of
some twenty new works as
part of a dedicated
concert series. Symphony
No. 104 in D Major is the
last of the 12 London
Symphonies from which
this arrangement is
drawn. Despite the
dramatic slow
introduction of the first
movement, the entire
symphony reflects the
great satisfaction and
joyful energy of Haydn's
existence during these
visits to England. Score

this day, the G-major
symphony, first performed
in March 1792, numbers
among Haydn's most
popular works. It owes
its English nickname
“Surprise” to the
striking tutti chords in
the Andante, which
apparently caught the
audience off guard. Haydn
had consciously
incorporated this effect
at a later stage - and
was thus subsequently
also perfectly willing to
authorize this nickname
that had been dreamt up
by a London musician.
This popular work also
spread rapidly through
German-speaking
countries, where it is
still firmly established
in the repertoire as the
“symphony with the
drumbeat.” This study

as the penultimate of the
London Symphonies. It
owes its epithet to its
unique beginning; a solo
drumroll in the timpani
ushers in the slow
introduction. This

Pley
el was one of the most
popular and prolific
composers in western
Europe at the turn of the
nineteenth century. This
symphony, composed in
1791, represents a
grandiose gesture to his
teacher Haydn, since the
Adagio second movement
and the Finale are
clearly related to his
music. A dramatic first
movement and a
surprisingly rich Minuet
and Trio complete this
striking work, written

Along with
Symphonies Nos. 80 and
81, Haydn’s Symphony in
F major Hob. I:79 belongs
to a group of works that
he composed in late 1784.
He wrote them for his
employer Prince Nikolaus
Esterházy who wished to
be entertained with new
music. The symphonies
were tailored for the
twenty-five to thirty
musicians who were in the
prince’s court
orchestra.

large-scale choral works,

this edition is based on
the G. Henle Complete

Bärenreiter has already

Haydn
’s Symphony in C major
Hob. I: 90, dated 1788 in
the autograph, belongs to
a group of works that he
composed between the
Paris symphonies (Hob. I:
82–87) and the London
symphonies (Hob. I:
93–104). It thus
belongs to the last
symphonies he wrote
before his journeys to
England in 1791–92 and
1794–95. Continuing the
collaboration between
Bärenreiter and the G.

regarding Haydn's

this edition is based on
the G. Henle Complete

In
his brief career George
Butterworth (1885-1916)
composed only a small
quantity of orchestral
works, but what he wrote
has never subsequently
been absent from the
repertoire. The two
English Idylls, the
Rhapsody 'A
Shropshire Lad' and
the idyll The Banks
of Green Willow are,
with the music of his
friend Ralph Vaughan
Williams and of Gustav
Holst, among the most
exquisite statements of
the English folk-song
idiom. This complete and
authoritative collection
includes an earlier
version of The Banks
of Green Willow, and
a fragment of an
Orchestral
Fantasia. Work in
progress in 1914 when
Butterworth enlisted to
serve in the Great War,
it suggests the composer
setting out in a bolder
direction, perhaps
inspired by the example
of Vaughan Williams's
A London
Symphony.

This
emotional expression of
loss and grief will bring
out the true musicianship
and maturity of your
ensemble. The amazing
harmonic vocabulary
effortlessly supports the
contemplative melodies as
the work slowly and
effectively develops.
Simply stunning, and
worth every second of
rehearsal. *Recorded by
the strings of the London
Symphony Orchestra with
the composer
conducting.
