Klaas van
der Woude has based his
arrangement An Old
Swedish Hymn on an
old pastoral hymn from
Dalarna. This beautiful
melody even attracted
ABBA as they used it as
the opening music for
some of their concerts.
Van der Woude’s
arrangement is in
classical style making it
suitable for any
occasion.
Voor
deze titel bewerkte Klaas
van der Woude de oude
Zweedse psalm Gammal
fäbodpsalm från
Dalarna (Oude

niet zomaar een
deuntje... Hij koos
hiermee een bekende
melodie die ook ABBAbij

openingstune gebruikte!
De bewerking van Klaas

klassieke stijl, geschikt

Damit wählte er nicht
irgendeine Melodie, war

The title of
this piece gives a clue
as to how it came about:
Jan de Haan took the
setting of psalm 149 from
the Geneva Psalter
of 1562 and created from
this simple, beautiful
melody a glorious, lively
opening work for concert
band. So it was that from
a psalm and an intrada
(prelude) a
Psaltrada was born
- for you to begin your
next concert in splendid
fashion.
De titel
van dit werk geeft een
hint over het ontstaan
ervan: Jan de Haan
gebruikte de zetting van
psalm 149 uit het
Geneefse psalter (1562).
Vanuit deze eenvoudige,
mooie melodie creëerde
hij een glorieus,
levendig openingswerk
voor harmonieorkest. Zo
werd op basis van een
psalm en een intrada
(openings muziek) een
psaltrada geschapen. Met
Psaltrada begint u
elk concert op luister
rijke wijze!
Der
Titel dieses Werkes
verrät, wie es
entstanden ist: Jan de
Haan nahm die Vertonung
von Psalm 149 aus dem
Genfer Psalter von
1562 und schuf aus dieser
schlichten, schönen
Melodie ein prachtvolles,
lebendiges
Eröffnungswerk für
Blasorchester. So wurde
aus einem Psalm und einer
Intrada also eine
Psaltrada“, mit der Sie
Ihr nächstes Konzert
glanzvoll beginnen
können!
Au cours
des siècles derniers, de
nombreux compositeurs ont
été tentés de mettre
en musique les 150
psaumes, habituellement
destinés être chantés
pendant les offices
religieux.
Psaltrada doit son
nom la contraction de
deux mots choisis par
l’auteur, «Psaume» et
«Intrada». Ecrite
partir du 149e psaume,
cette oeuvre conserve
toute la solennité de la
mélodie du psaume
original, laquelle
s’ajoute un motif
charmant faisant de
Psaltrada une
agréable pièce
d’ouverture de
concert.
Il titolo
di questo brano ci svela
come è stato composto:
Jan de Haan ha ripreso la
struttura del salmo 149
dal Geneva Psalter del
1562, creando da questa
semplice e splendida
melodia un glorioso e
vivace brano di apertura.
Quindi, da un salmo e un
preludio (intrada) nasce
una Psaltrada,
ideale per iniziare il
vostro concerto.

Wer nur den
lieben Gott lässt
walten was composed
by Georg Neumark in about
1641 and was subtitled
‘Trostlied’ literally
meaning consolation song.
Songbooks at the time
showed the popularity of
this song and it is still
well-known today partly
due to Johann Sebastian
Bach’s use of the
melody for one of his own
chorals. In Jan de
Haan’s arrangement the
choral is heard twice,
once, alternating with
the original motif from
the introduction and a
second time, without
interruption, reflecting
the composer’s original
intention - a song of
consolation.

Gesangbücher belegen
eine frühe Popularität
des Liedes, das heute
nicht zuletzt durch
Johann Sebastian Bach,

Bearbeitung erklingt der
Bach-Choral zweimal:
einmal alternierend mit
dem Motiv aus Jan de

einmal ohne Unterbrechung
in einer Besetzung, die
der ursprünglichen
Absicht gerecht wird:
einem
Trostlied.
Intorno

The French composer
Louis Bourgeois lived
from c.1510 to 1560.
Bourgeois was cantor in
Geneva and, commissioned
by John Calvin, he
composed melodies for
metrical (rhyming)
versions of the psalms.
After completing about a
hundred one-part psalms,
he made some four-part
arrangements, which were
denounced and even
resulted in his
imprisonment for a day.
Later, Bourgeois
published a number of
psalm collections, and
judging from his book Le
droict chemin de musique
he was also an excellent
educator. The melodies
Bourgeois composed, are
(contrary to Gregorian
chants) particularly
suitable for community
singing. This applies to
his hymn tune Saint
Michael, which is why
this melody hasbeen used
for various texts,
written for many
occasions. John Blanken
made this arrangement for
a wedding ceremony: an
occasion in which faith
and trust play a large -
if not the largest -
role. Hence the title
Hymn of Faith. The
arrangement contains four
verses of the hymn. After
a majestic opening the
hymn follows twice, the
second verse being
embellished in the tenor
register. After a short
interlude verse three
follows, played by a
quartet. The majestic
opening is then repeated
as a modulation into the
fourth verse, which
concludes the work in a
brilliant tutti.

Haan’s arrangement the
choral is heard twice,
once, alternating with
the original motif from
the introduction and a
second time, without
interruption, reflecting
the composer’s original
intention - a song of
consolation.
We
r nur den lieben Gott
lässt walten wurde
um 1641 von Georg Neumark
geschrieben. Alte
Gesangbücher belegen
eine frühe Popularität
des Liedes, das heute
nicht zuletzt durch
Johann Sebastian Bach,
der es u. a. für einen
Choral verwendete, jeder
kennt. In dieser
Bearbeitung erklingt der
Bach-Choral zweimal:
einmal alternierend mit
dem Motiv aus Jan de
Haans Einleitung und
einmal ohne Unterbrechung
in einer Besetzung, die
der ursprünglichen
Absicht gerecht wird:
einem
Trostlied.
Intorno
al 1641, Georg Neumark
compone il cantico Wer
nur den lieben Gott
laesst walten, nel
quale ogni strofa esprime
la fede in Dio e gli d il
sottotitolo di Canto di
consolazione. Il cantico
ebbe grande notoriet . In
questo arrangiamento
firmato Jan de Haan, il
corale è esposto a due
riprese: dapprima
preceduto da una breve
introduzione seguita da
una variazione tra ogni
verso, in seguito in una
trama continua che,
fedele al sottotitolo
originale, cerca nella
sua azione la
consolazione.

The French composer
Louis Bourgeois lived
from c.1510 to 1560.
Bourgeois was cantor in
Geneva and, commissioned
by John Calvin, he
composed melodies for
metrical (rhyming)
versions of the psalms.
After completing about a
hundred one-part psalms,
he made some four-part
arrangements, which were
denounced and even
resulted in his
imprisonment for a day.
Later, Bourgeois
published a number of
psalm collections, and
judging from his book Le
droict chemin de musique
he was also an excellent
educator. The melodies
Bourgeois composed, are
(contrary to Gregorian
chants) particularly
suitable for community
singing. This applies to
his hymn tune Saint
Michael, which is why
this melody hasbeen used
for various texts,
written for many
occasions. John Blanken
made this arrangement for
a wedding ceremony: an
occasion in which faith
and trust play a large -
if not the largest -
role. Hence the title
Hymn of Faith. The
arrangement contains four
verses of the hymn. After
a majestic opening the
hymn follows twice, the
second verse being
embellished in the tenor
register. After a short
interlude verse three
follows, played by a
quartet. The majestic
opening is then repeated
as a modulation into the
fourth verse, which
concludes the work in a
brilliant tutti.

The title of
this piece gives a clue
as to how it came about:
Jan de Haan took the
setting of psalm 149 from
the Geneva Psalter
of 1562 and created from
this simple, beautiful
melody a glorious, lively
opening work for concert
band. So it was that from
a psalm and an intrada
(prelude) a
Psaltrada was born
- for you to begin your
next concert in splendid
fashion.
De titel
van dit werk geeft een
hint over het ontstaan
ervan: Jan de Haan
gebruikte de zetting van
psalm 149 uit het
Geneefse psalter (1562).
Vanuit deze eenvoudige,
mooie melodie creëerde
hij een glorieus,
levendig openingswerk
voor harmonieorkest. Zo
werd op basis van een
psalm en een intrada
(openings muziek) een
psaltrada geschapen. Met
Psaltrada begint u
elk concert op luister
rijke wijze!
Der
Titel dieses Werkes
verrät, wie es
entstanden ist: Jan de
Haan nahm die Vertonung
von Psalm 149 aus dem
Genfer Psalter von
1562 und schuf aus dieser
schlichten, schönen
Melodie ein prachtvolles,
lebendiges
Eröffnungswerk für
Blasorchester. So wurde
aus einem Psalm und einer
Intrada also eine
Psaltrada“, mit der Sie
Ihr nächstes Konzert
glanzvoll beginnen
können!
Au cours
des siècles derniers, de
nombreux compositeurs ont
été tentés de mettre
en musique les 150
psaumes, habituellement
destinés être chantés
pendant les offices
religieux.
Psaltrada doit son
nom la contraction de
deux mots choisis par
l’auteur, «Psaume» et
«Intrada». Ecrite
partir du 149e psaume,
cette oeuvre conserve
toute la solennité de la
mélodie du psaume
original, laquelle
s’ajoute un motif
charmant faisant de
Psaltrada une
agréable pièce
d’ouverture de
concert.
Il titolo
di questo brano ci svela
come è stato composto:
Jan de Haan ha ripreso la
struttura del salmo 149
dal Geneva Psalter del
1562, creando da questa
semplice e splendida
melodia un glorioso e
vivace brano di apertura.
Quindi, da un salmo e un
preludio (intrada) nasce
una Psaltrada,
ideale per iniziare il
vostro concerto.
