Designed to open a Christmas concert, A Christmas Herald starts with a fanfare that introduces a lyrical theme, which eventually turns out to be a descant to Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, which is subsequently introduced by trombones and euphoniums. The famous carol then gradually transforms back into the fanfare, which closes the work as it began.

A Christmas Herald, een openingswerk voor een kerstconcert, begint met een proclamerende fanfare. Deze fanfare introduceert een lyrisch thema, dat uiteindelijk uitmondt in een discant over Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,een melodie die achtereenvolgens wordt gepresenteerd door de trombones en euphoniums. De beroemde carol gaat vervolgens langzaam weer over in de fanfare, waarmee het werk eindigt zoals het begon.

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times

Five States of Change is geschreven in opdracht van Kunstfactor voor de 4e divisie van de NBK (Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen) 2011. Het werk is opgedragen aan Jappie Dijkstra en het MUI (Muziekuitleen- en Informatiecentrum)te Arnhem,als waardering voor hun inspanningen met betrekking tot de ontwikkeling van het repertoire voor blaasorkesten.De componist schrijft: Het idee voor het werk kwam in mij op toen ik een artikel las over een takbinnen de Chinese filosofie waarvan denaam wordt afgekort tot Wu Xing* - waar geen exacte vertaling voor is, maar wat zoveel betekent als vijf elementen, vijf fasen of vijf stadia van verandering. Zo blijft de cyclus voortgaan. Zelf wasik vooral ge nteresseerd in de cyclus van emoties: Meditatie - Verdriet - Angst - Boosheid - Vreugde - (Meditatie) enz. De gedachte aandit cyclische principe leverde een reis door een muzikale wereld van emoties op. Five States of Changebestaat uit vijf delen die betrekking hebben op de emotionele cyclus. Ik heb geprobeerd de muziek op natuurlijke wijzete laten ontstaan, met zo weinig mogelijk herhalingen. Elk deel vloeit voort uit de muzikale elementen uit het slot van hetvoorgaande deel. Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk.

Five States of Change se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. L’idea di comporre questo brano è venuta a Philip Sparke leggendo un articolo sulla filosofi a cinese che si basa su cicli di cinque elementi, fasi e stadi di cambiamento. A Sparke interessavano in particolare il flusso dei sentimenti come la meditazione, il lutto, la paura, la rabbia e la gioia. A partire da questi elementi ha composto un impressionante “viaggio” musicale suddiviso in cinque sezioni, tematicamente intrecciate tra loro, quasi a voler formare un cerchio.

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the ‘Corps of Discovery’ from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

De titel van dit werk verwijst naar het begin van het avontuur van de ‘National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain’, maar The Pioneers is ook een eerbewijs aan twee helden van de componist: Meriwether Lewis en William Clark,die twee eeuwen geleden op expeditie gingen in opdracht van de Amerikaanse president Thomas Jefferson. Ze vertrokken vanuit Louisville, Kentucky in mei 1804. Ze slaagden er niet alleen in om de Grote Oceaan te bereiken doorvijandig gebied, maar ze vonden ook hun weg terug - in drie jaar! Het werk beschrijft deze reis niet, maar geeft de componist de mogelijkheid om deze geweldige prestatie te memoreren.

Der Titel ist ein Salut an die Zweihundertjahrfeier einer Expedition von zwei Heldenfiguren des Komponisten - Meriwether Lewis und William Clark. Ihre Expeditionstruppe, bekannt als das ‘Corps of Discovery’, erforschte das Quellgebiet des Missouri und fand eine Route zum Pazifik durch feindliches Gebiet. Der Komponist ergriff die Gelegenheit, den 200. Jahrestag dieser Meisterleistung zu feiern, mit diesem Werk, das sich auch wunderbar zur Umrahmung Ihres nächsten festlichen Anlasses eignet.

Le 30 avril 1803, le Traité de cession de la Louisiane entre la France et les États-Unis était signé. L’acquisition de ces terres permet aux États-Unis de doubler la superficie de leur territoire de l’époque. Meriwether Lewis et William Clark sont alors mandatés par le président Thomas Jefferson, pour cartographier les sources du Missouri et tracer une voie vers le Pacifique. Parti de Louisville dans le Kentucky, en mai 1804, le corps expéditionnaire (‘Corps of Discovery’) traverse d’interminables territoires hostiles, réussit atteindre le Pacifique et rentre au terme d’un périple de deux ans ! Cette composition ne fait pas le récit du voyage, mais permet au compositeur decommémorer les deux cents ans de cette fabuleuse expédition.

L’acquisizione di queste terre permise agli Stati Uniti di raddoppiare la superficie del proprio territorio. L’allora presidente Thomas Jefferson incaricò Meriwether Lewis e William Clark di cartografare le sorgenti del fiume Missouri e tracciare la strada verso il Pacifico. Partita da Louisville (Kentucky), nel maggio del 1804, la spedizione attraversò interminabili territori ostili, riuscendo a raggiungere il Pacifico per poi tornare alla base di partenza al termine di un periplo durato due anni. Questo brano non è un racconto del viaggio, ma permette al compositoredi commemorare i duecento anni di questa favolosa spedizione.

They set out as the ‘Corps of Discovery’ from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

De titel van dit werk verwijst naar het begin van het avontuur van de ‘National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain’, maar The Pioneers is ook een eerbewijs aan twee helden van de componist: Meriwether Lewis en William Clark,die twee eeuwen geleden op expeditie gingen in opdracht van de Amerikaanse president Thomas Jefferson. Ze vertrokken vanuit Louisville, Kentucky in mei 1804. Ze slaagden er niet alleen in om de Grote Oceaan te bereiken doorvijandig gebied, maar ze vonden ook hun weg terug - in drie jaar! Het werk beschrijft deze reis niet, maar geeft de componist de mogelijkheid om deze geweldige prestatie te memoreren.

Ihre Expeditionstruppe, bekannt als das ‘Corps of Discovery’, erforschte das Quellgebiet des Missouri und fand eine Route zum Pazifik durch feindliches Gebiet. Der Komponist ergriff die Gelegenheit, den 200. Jahrestag dieser Meisterleistung zu feiern, mit diesem Werk, das sich auch wunderbar zur Umrahmung Ihres nächsten festlichen Anlasses eignet.

Le 30 avril 1803, le Traité de cession de la Louisiane entre la France et les États-Unis était signé. L’acquisition de ces terres permet aux États-Unis de doubler la superficie de leur territoire de l’époque. Meriwether Lewis et William Clark sont alors mandatés par le président Thomas Jefferson, pour cartographier les sources du Missouri et tracer une voie vers le Pacifique. Parti de Louisville dans le Kentucky, en mai 1804, le corps expéditionnaire (‘Corps of Discovery’) traverse d’interminables territoires hostiles, réussit atteindre le Pacifique et rentre au terme d’un périple de deux ans ! Cette composition ne fait pas le récit du voyage, mais permet au compositeur decommémorer les deux cents ans de cette fabuleuse expédition.

L’acquisizione di queste terre permise agli Stati Uniti di raddoppiare la superficie del proprio territorio. L’allora presidente Thomas Jefferson incaricò Meriwether Lewis e William Clark di cartografare le sorgenti del fiume Missouri e tracciare la strada verso il Pacifico. Partita da Louisville (Kentucky), nel maggio del 1804, la spedizione attraversò interminabili territori ostili, riuscendo a raggiungere il Pacifico per poi tornare alla base di partenza al termine di un periplo durato due anni. Questo brano non è un racconto del viaggio, ma permette al compositoredi commemorare i duecento anni di questa favolosa spedizione.

Suite from Hymn of the Highlands draws three expressive musical pictures of the Scottish highlands. The first movement, Ardross Castle, features solo passages for clarinet and bassoon and features a fascinating bagpipe melody. The second movement, Alladale, is a saxophone trio with an accompaniment featuring the percussion section. The final movement, Dundonnell, features two highly contrasting melodies, a wild presto and the bagpipe melody first heard in the first movement.

Suite from Hymn of the Highlands schetst drie indrukwekkende muzikale beelden van de Schotse Hooglanden. Hoewel is gekozen voor een Schots thema, zijn er geen volksliedjes gebruikt. Het eerste deel, Ardross Castle, wordtgekenmerkt door solo’s voor klarinet en fagot of euphonium, voordat een doedelzakmelodie wordt ge ntroduceerd. Het tweede deel, Alladale, is een trio voor saxofoon waarin het slagwerk een belangrijke rol speelt. Dit leidtnaar de finale, Dundonnell, die contrastrijk heen en weer beweegt tussen een wild presto en de doedelzakmelodie uit het eerste deel. Met de zwaarddans Strathcarron is deze suite uit te breiden tot een vierdelig erk.

The birth of Philip Sparke’s second son, Benjamin, was the inspiration for composing Ballad for Benny. A short calm introduction leads to the main ballad theme, a gentle waltz melody. Following the work’s climax in which the complete band plays the main theme the sound fades and the piece ends in calm and serenity.

De geboorte van zijn tweede zoon, Benjamin, vormde voor Philip Sparke de aanleiding tot het componeren van Ballad for Benny. Een korte, kalme inleiding neemt ons mee naar het balladeachtige hoofdthema - een lieflijke wals.Deze bereikt een hoogtepunt en leidt naar een tussengedeelte met passages in tertsen. Dit bouwt zich weer op tot een hoogtepunt, dat het hoofdthema opnieuw introduceert. Deze weergave van het thema door het complete orkest gaat overin een op het tussengedeelte gebaseerd kort coda, waarmee het werk rustig eindigt.

Die Geburt seines zweiten Sohnes, Benjamin, inspirierte Sparke zu der Komposition Ballad for Benny. Eine kurze, ruhige Einleitung führt uns zum balladenartigen Hauptthema, einem lieblichen Walzer, gespielt von Klarinette und Saxophon. Der Walzer erreicht einen Höhepunkt und führt zu einem Zwischenteil mit Passagen in Terzen für Flöte, Klarinette und Altsaxophon. Dieser steigert sich wieder zu einem Höhepunkt, welcher das Hauptthema mit den Blechbläsern aufs Neue vorstellt, nun gespielt von den Blechblasinstrumenten. Diese Wiedergabe des Themas durch das gesamte Blasorchester geht über in eine auf dem Zwischenteil basierende kurze Koda, mit welcher das Stück ruhigendet. Aufregend und gefühlvoll zugleich, wie der Anlass der Komposition.

Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning Nowhereland and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brasssection remind of Wagner's music.

Utopia is de naam waaronder een in 1516 door de Engelse schrijver Thomas More gepubliceerd boek bekend is geworden. Utopia is een door More zelf naar het Grieks gemaakt woord dat Nergensland betekent en de woorden utopie en utopismeheeft doen ontstaan. Utopia schildert een ideale staat op een ver van de bewoonde wereld gelegen eiland. Dit idee vormde de inpiratiebron voor deze compositie. Qua variatie in thematiek en stijl doet het werk denken aan Oregon.Ook Utopia bestaat uit een combinatie van stijlen die de atmosfeer ademen van filmmuziek. Toch klinkt Utopia minder Amerikaans. Het langzame, meeslepende middendeel bijvoorbeeld komt dichter in de buurt van de Europese romantiek.de drieklanksignalen in het koper herinneren aan de muziek van Wagner.

The popular Swedish children's series Pippi LÃ¥ngstrump (Pippi Longstocking) is about an exceedingly strong and strong-willed little girl with red braids - who is the brainchild of Astrid Lindgren. This series has been broadcasted in many countries. I arranged its cheerful theme tune in samba style. Even with the new rhythm, the original song is still very recognizable. In the exuberant samba style, the percussion plays an important role. Within the LÃ¥ngstrump Samba, this is especially clear in the ad libitum percussion solo halfway through the arrangement. The solo can go on as long as desired, and offers plenty of freedom because of the free choice of the instruments used.

Pippi Langstrumpf, das ebenso starke wie eigenwillige Mädchen mit den roten Zöpfen, hat in Büchern, Filmen und Fernsehserien die Herzen der Kinder und jung Gebliebenen auf der ganzen Welt erobert. Untrennbar mit der Fernsehserie verknüpft ist die fröhliche Titelmelodie, die von John Blanken in ein temperamentvolles Samba-Gewand gesteckt wurde. Auch in diesem neuen Rhythmus ist das Originallied noch klar zu erkennen. Das Schlagzeug spielt eine wichtige Rolle, ganz besonders im ad libitum spielbaren Schlagzeugsolo, dessen Dauer und Instrumentenwahl frei wählbar sind. Ausgelassen und temperamentvoll!
