The composer
Joseph Martin Kraus was
born in the same year as
Mozart, and like
Salzburg's famous son, he
was highly gifted and
died too young. But in
recent years he has
received more attention.
And rightly so! The
Miserere was composed in
1773 during his student
years in Erfurt and is
evidence of his technical
abilities at the age of
just seventeen. Even in
this early work Kraus
showed himself to be a
true exponent of the
musical Sturm und Drang
movement. For all its
youthful carefreeness and
originality in terms of
compositional technique,
the music is
characterised by great
seriousness and depth of
expression, abruptness,
and at times also
brusqueness.

Wes
Montgomery's contribution
to the world of jazz
guitar is quite unique.
His poetic art of
building a solo, his
octave-style solo
technique, as well as his
chordal-melodic statement
revolutionized jazz
guitar playing. Wes also
showed this innovative
insight with the guitar
as an unaccompanied
instrument. This folio
contains the only two
solo recordings he
produced for Riverside:
Mi Cosa, an original
composition, was not
released with the
original LP, it was added
to the CD re-issue as a
bonus track under the
title, Unidentified Solo
Guitar; and While We're
Are Young by Alec Wilder,
released on So Much
Guitar. Titles: While We
Are Young * Mi Cosa
(Unidentified Solo) *

German.
The
piano-accompanied Lied is
undoubtedly the main
genre of Pauline
Viardot-Garcia's oeuvre.
With this volume, we
present settings of
German texts by such
poets as Ludwig Uhland,
Eduard Morike, Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe,
Heinrich Heine, Emanuel
Geibel, Ludwig Rellstab
and Richard Pohl. Except
for the Uhland settings,
these German Lieder were
written between 1862 and
1871 during Viardot's
Baden-Baden period, when
she shifted the focus of
her activities from
singing to composing and
teaching. Here she
worked, among other
things, on the poetry of
Eduard Morike, which she
called the greatest and
most genuine in all
German poetry after
Goethe.One of her first
published songs was the
setting of the Uhland
poem Des Knaben Berglied.
Accompanying herself on
the piano, she performed
it in 1838 on her first
concert tour of Germany.
A performance of the song
at the Leipzig Gewandhaus
prompted Robert Schumann
to remark: She showed
three talents here
[composition, singing and
piano playing], each of
which would grace its
artist. Through her
music, Viardot brings the
creatures in the poems to
life, tracing their
different characters and
inner states, thus giving
the texts a new level of
interpretation.

Julio
Sagreras was born in
Buenos Aires in 1879 into
a family of Spanish
origins. Both of his
parents, Gaspar Sagreras
and Dolores Ramirez, were
guitarists. From a very
young age Julio showed
extraordinary musical
skills that made him an
admired and requested
guitarist in all the
musical salons of the
Argentine capital. This
edition differs from the
previous ones not only
for a new and more modern
musical graphics, for the
simplification of the
fingerings that Sagreras
pedantically repeated
even in the most obvious
situations, for the
correction of errors, the
development ofmore
detailed explanations and
the addition of some
necessary historical and
practical
clarifications.
