In
1726 Johann Sebastian
Bach performed a series
of cantatas by his
Meiningen cousin Johann
Ludwig, then continued
this series with his own
works, but remained
faithful to the textual
models used his cousin: a
Meiningen cycle of texts
by an unknown author from
the early 18th century.
All these texts share the
characteristic of
including two quotations
from the bible: one from
the Old Testament at the
beginning, and another
from the New Testament in
the middle. These
cantatas include Herr,
deine Augen sehen nach
dem Glauben BWV 102. The
opening chorus in several
sections is one of Bach's
masterpieces of choral
composition. The cantata
is also one of those
works on which Bach's
later reputation was
based: performances are
documented from 1776 in
Hamburg and in Berlin by
Zelter's Sing-Akademie
from 1813 onwards. In
1830 it was one of the
very first cantatas by
Bach to appear in print.

If you
enjoy singing Baroque
music and value the
importance of kindness,
courage and compassion,
this new 30 minute
through-composed work by
Mark Hayes for chorus,
soprano and tenor
soloists and orchestra is
for you. Drawing from the
writings of ancient and
contemporary authors, the
original text of
âKindness,â
written by Hayes, seeks
to answer the question,
âHow then shall we
live, especially in a
world that seems so
dysfunctional?â The
answer: live with
kindness, courage and
compassion. When we are
joined as one in our
pursuit of these values,
we can make a lasting
impact. To quote Margaret
Mead, âNever
underestimate the ability
of a small group of
committed individuals to
change the world.â
âKindnessâ is
set in the Baroque
tradition and features an
original chorale tune
with three separate
texts, a fugue, both
conventional and
retrograde,
recitative-like sections
for the soprano and tenor
soloists and extensive
instrumental interludes.
As a nod to Baroque
masters such as Johann
Sebastian Bach and George
Frideric Handel, Hayes
included passages
imitating âJesu, Joy
of Man's Desiringâ
and âHallelujah
Chorus.â This work
is perfect for high
school and college choirs
as well as community and
church choirs. The text
is intentionally not
sacred, rather universal
in its appeal. Imagine
how the music and message
of this work could join a
community together in the
pursuit of kindness,
courage and compassion.
It's what the world
needs.. now.

The
cantata Es ist euch gut,
dass ich hingehe [It is
well that I go forth] BWV
108 for Cantate Sunday is
one of the cantatas
composed on texts by the
Leipzig poetess
Christiane Mariane von
Ziegler with which Bach
concluded his second
annual cycle of cantatas
after he had abandoned
the annual cycle of
chorale cantatas at
Easter 1725. The text
contains two sayings by
Jesus which are taken
directly from the Sunday
gospel reading (John
16:5-15). The quotation
opening the cantata was
set by Bach as a bass
aria with solo oboe
d'amore; it breathes
tranquility and
assurance. The second
quotation, however, is
set as an extended choral
fugue in three sections;
it forms the center of
the cantata. The free
text surrounding the
biblical quotations is
divided into two arias in
which the emphasis is on
melodic lines; there is
only one single
recitative, the original
text of which was
substantially abridged by
Bach. A four-part chorale
concludes the cantata.

For
many of us, Christmas is
a time of joy and
celebration, a time to be
spent with family and
friends...a festive,
happy time. But for
others, the same holiday
season only serves to
underscore the
loneliness,pain, and
hopelessness of their own
lives. In our story,
Susanna King's bright
spirit and love for life
overrides her
circumstances; you see,
Susanna has been recently
diagnosed with cancer.
But in spite of bad news
and challenging times,
she lives with the joy of
Christmas in her
heart. This is an
emotion-filled story,
rich with heart. It comes
alive with great new
songs that are sometimes
powerful, sometimes
celebratory, sometimes
poignant; sometimes
happy, sometimes sad;
songs that propel the
story along while
speaking to our hearts
with the love language of
God's Christmas
story...the birth of our
Savior,
Jesus. Designed to
bring your music and
drama ministries
together, Shepherds and
Kings proclaims a strong,
vibrant message about the
power of love--our love
for one another, our love
for God, and most
importantly, God's desire
that ALL would come to
know of His great love
for us. Share the hope
and good news of
Christmas with your
church and community this
year, through your
presentation of Shepherds
and Kings.

Publishing YouTube: Ms.
Brock’s moving
poem is lyrical
throughout. Even in its
beautiful originality,
the poem invokes The Book
of Common Prayer and
biblical scripture (the
latter through references
to dust and breath from
Genesis 2 to the final
line of the poem invoking
the opening of Psalm 62).
Ms. Brock’s poetry
is also filled with
wonderful twists on
traditional texts (such
as in the creative and
reverse naming of the
Trinity in speaking of
Inventing Wind, Generous
Christ, and Luminous
God). Musically, the main
melodic material of the
piece is immediately
heard on a solo organ
color accompanied by
organ strings over a
recurring pedal pulse on
the pitch C. The chorus
soon enters with the
first stanza of the text.
As this stanza unfolds,
the harmony starts to
gradually change as the
pulsing pedal rhythm
begins to move upward by
step. An organ interlude,
reflective of the opening
introduction, soon
emerges (though now over
a C-sharp recurring pedal
pulse), and leads to a
similar choral setting as
found in stanza one. As
the poem’s second
stanza moves forward, it
eventually folds into the
more harmonically rich
stanza three. A fast,
dance-like section
evolves at Inventing
Wind, what a lively dance
your energy creates!
eventually bringing the
work to its climax point.
The spirit of dance soon
subsides and leads to a
quiet and gentle close on
the words …for you
alone my soul in silence
waits.

This
familiar Christmas carol

imaginative text painting
point to the wonder and
