Georges
Bizet's opera Carmen had
its first performance in
Paris in 1875. In the
audience was the
17-year-old Hungarian
violin virtuoso and
budding composer Jeno
Hubay. After the
performance Hubay started
writing his Carmen
Fantasy from memory. The
following season for his
debut recital in Paris,
he included his newly
created composition. It
is a lyrical work of
great beauty and
brilliance. Hubay
combined his career of a
concertizing virtuoso,
composer and violin
pedagogue. At the Royal
Conservatory in Brussels
he became the successor
of Vieuxtemps and
Wieniawski. Later, Franz
Liszt invited Hubay to
lead the violin
department in the newly
created Budapest Music
Academy. He created the
world-renowned Hungarian
school of violin playing.
His student, Franz von
Vecsey, recorded
theCarmen Fantasy in 1904
at age 11! His other
students included Joseph
Szigeti, Zoltan Szekely,
Sandor Vegh, Endre
Gertler, Gyorgy Garay and
many more. Hubay was a
very active composer,
creating over 120 works
including operas,
ballets, concertos, songs
and instrumental
compositions. Pablo de
Sarasate wrote his Carmen
Fantasy in 1882. It is a
composition of drama and
passion, written with his
unparalleled brilliance
for violin writing. This
work has remained in the
standard repertory, on
programs of virtuoso
soloists, as well as a
required work for major
competitions..

concert career began at
age seventeen after he
was awarded the coveted
Premier Prix from the
Paris Conservatoire for
both violin and

London debut, the
playwright and music
critique George Bernard
Shaw wrote in his review

century, Pablo de
Sarasate also composed a
series of pieces for
violin and piano (or
orchestra) for his own
concert use. Highly
virtuosic salon pieces
with echoes of national
folk music traditions
from all over Europe are
at the centre. Sarasate
published his eight
Spanish dances in four
books between 1878 and
1882. They alternate
between fiery passion and
a yearning
expressiveness, and are
undoubtedly among his
most successful
compositions. In masterly
fashion, Sarasate here
mixes up Spanish folk
tunes with arrangements
of popular compositions

piece composed in 1863.
Even today, concert life
is hard to imagine
without the Introduction
et Rondo capriccioso. The
highly virtuosic work
already inspired critics
and audiences during the
composer's lifetime;
reported about the
premiere in 1867 was: The
Introduction and the
Rondo capriccioso for the
same instrument are both
original and charming,
and Maestro Sarasate, who
was in his element here,
admirably made the most
of it. And a few years
later, a music critic
described the work as a
kind of fantasy waltz in
the Spanish style and
with a most bewitching
effect. After the first
performances in 1867,
despite success, the
work's score and
orchestral parts had
little chance of
publication due to
concert companies'
reluctance. In 1869 the
Paris publishing house G.
Hartmann merely published
