This
lively march comes to us
from one of Holst's most
popular works, the First
Suite in E flat for
Military Band written in
1909. Two contrasting
themes-a crisp, marcato
in D and a lyrical,
legato theme in G-thrill
listeners. The powerful
finale of the march, back
in D, uses both melodies
layered on top of one
another. The lyrical
section features the
cellos and violas and all
parts are
interesting.

March Militaire in D
Major was originally
composed for piano, 4
hands. It, along with two
other march militaires (G
and E-flat), is believed
to have been written in
the late summer or fall
of 1818. Little else is
known about these works,
except that they are full
of spontaneity and zest.

Here's a
march that is so much
more than a march! This
celebratory concert piece
contains enthusiastic
fanfare, stately march,
lyric melodies, rich
harmonies, prominent
rhythms and gentle
pastoral moments.
Shifting is required for
violin 1, cello and bass,
and optional shifting for
viola. Students in all
sections will experience
the full spectrum of
expressiveness in
dynamics and bowings and
will be challenged with
intonation and rhythmic
clarity. This might be
the time to give your
traditional graduation
march a break!
(6:00).
