C'est apres
un entretien avec le
Professeur Yuji Ikegaya
concernant ses recherches
en neurologie que j'ai
voulu travailler sur
quelques particularites
fonctionnelles du cerveau
humain. Quatre de ces
specificites ont retenu
mon attention. La
premiere est ce qui est
de l'ordre de l'autonomie
ou de l'independance. En
effet, alors qu'aucune
stimulation exterieure
n'ait lieu, le cerveau
humain montre des
activites spontanees qui
s'expriment sous forme de
patterns fixes. La
seconde est le principe
d'<> des
gestes ou des phrases
avec le fonctionnement
des neurones miroirs :
l'homme apprend en
imitant les gestes des
autres, c'est la source
d'emotions comme la
compassion ou la
sympathie. La troisieme
est liee a
l'apprentissage spontane
et l'auto-renouvellement
du cerveau, faculte qui
le differencie
singulierement de
l'ordinateur. Enfin la
conscience du <>,
qui est ce qui le
differencie du cerveau de
l'animal. J'ai trouve
dans la forme classique
et austere du quatuor un
terrain d'exploration
ideal pour elaborer ce
projet musical. Le
quatuor est en effet
compose des quatre
cerveaux des musiciens,
mais il est egalement une
entite a part entiere, un
centre nevralgique
unitaire. L'ecriture
musicale procede ainsi
par imitation, sur une
base de patterns qui
varie constamment dans
une quete identitaire et
dans son rapport a
l'autre et aux autres
(musiciens). L'autre,
c'est egalement
l'autiste, celui qui
n'arrive pas bien a
imiter et a comprendre
les expressions, emotions
et gestes exterieurs. La
question des rapports
devient alors celle de la
dependance, de
l'independance et/ou de
l'interdependance. Elle
est au centre de mon
processus compositionnel
qui, par l'organisation
et la sonification des
comportements aux
differentes voix du
quatuor, est egalement un
moyen de me questionner
en tant que compositrice,
sur mon identite et sur
mon propre rapport au
monde. (Misato
Mochizuki)

TACHU
N (SPRING OUTING) was
composed in 2021 for
“The Joy
Project,†to
commission uplifting
works for performance at
free outdoor concerts in
the San Francisco Bay
region. The work’s
title comes from the
annual Chinese festival
when people go outdoors
and travel, to welcome
the arrival of the new
Spring season. This
cheerful 5-minute work
features energetic
melodic lines in unison,
contrasting with vivid
rhythmic patterns, which
the composer indicates as
expressing our excitement
upon breathing the fresh
Spring air. Tachun
(Spring Outing) was
commissioned by and
dedicated to the Del Sol
String Quartet as a part
of The Joy Project in
2021. Tachun is also the
name of a Chinese
traditional festival when
people go outdoors and
travel, to welcome the
arrival of the new spring
season each year. Here is
a statement from the Del
Sol String Quartet about
this project:“Del
Sol has commissioned a
body of short musical
works written to give
joy. As our gift to our
community during these
times, we are performing
these pieces in numerous
free concerts at public
settings around the Bay
Area — parks,
schoolyards, open spaces
— where people can
soak up some musical
“joy†while
safely practicing social
distancing in the open
air.â€My string
quartet has active
melodic lines in unison,
contrasting with vivid
rhythmic patterns, to
express our excitement
when we breathe the fresh
air.

No matter the
occasion, string quartets
are always in demand.
Music for
Celebrations features
eight works by composers
ranging from Marc-Antoine
Charpentier to Charles
Gounod which rank among
the most popular wedding
classics, with many of
the pieces also well
suited for other
occasions. The arranger
Anthony Gröger has
succeeded in transforming
the works, some of which
originally had extensive
instrumentation, into
compelling string quartet
arrangements that are
also easy to play while
preserving much of the
familiar character of the
originals. The third
violin part, which can
replace the viola part if
no violist is available,
is an added
bonus.

verschillende bekende
componisten, van

behoren tot de meest
geliefde klassiekers voor

The
most straightforward and
shortest of any of my
string quartets to date,
the sixth employs only
two thematic gestures
which are used, perhaps
obsessively, throughout:
(a) brief melodic lines
formed principally of
sevenths, and (b) an
ascending scale. The
formal design is born out
of the continual
combining, interweaving
and juxtaposition of
these two elements, which
collect themselves into
two movements played
without pause: the first
predominantly slow and
pensive, the second
rhythmic and driving.

When
Hugo Ticciati asked me to
write a new piece for his
quartet, I was
immediately enthusiastic
about this project. I
love how Hugo and his
O/MODERNT String Quartet
unite old and new music
in a completely natural
way. So, I was absolutely
excited about Hugo`s idea
of having my piece based
on two of my idols, Bach
and Beethoven,
deconstructing the one
and constructing the
other. With all my
respect for these great
composers I gave to the
piece a very personal
inner part consisting of
my own music that
influenced and inspired
the other parts. For the
whole piece I felt very
close to Beethoven, who
said: To make a fugue is
not art, which [is
something] I have made
dozens of times in my
study. But the
imagination will assert
its rights and must come
today, in light of the
old traditional form, to
another truly poetic
element. De/Con is a
travel into different
centuries with different
sound-languages. For me,
it was like having a
wonderful constructive
discussion with Johann
Sebastian Bach and Ludwig
van Beethoven, each of us
trying to speak our own
language, approaching the
others step by step. The
piece could be defined as
a Love Letter to two of
the greatest composers
ever. De/Con could be
preceded by (parts of)
Johann Sebastian Bach's
Die Kunst der Fuge (The
Art of the Fugue) and
succeeded by Ludwig van
Beethoven's Grosse Fuge
(Great Fugue). Ideally,
then, all parts should be
played attacca. It could,
but it hasn't to be
played with these two
pieces. (Manuela

Adler's
milestone String Quartet
No. 10 was composed for
the Cassatt String
Quartet for performance
at the Bowdoin
International Music
Festival's 50th
Anniversary season in
2014. Built in a single
movement of contrasting
sections, Adler's 10th
will continue to be
featured in upcoming
concerts by the Cassatt
Quartet, including a
performance in Beijing in
July. The String
Quartet No. 10 was
written in 2013 for the
50th anniversary of the
Bowdoin International
Summer Music Festival and
is dedicated to the
Cassatt Quartet who
premiered the work during
the 50th anniversary
celebration in July 2014.
 The work was written
with a generous grant
from the Fromm Music
Foundation.The 10th
String Quartet is in one
continuous movement but
divided into four
sections. Â The first
section is a slow
introduction which
presents the basic
harmonic material of the
entire work. Â This is
suddenly interrupted by a
very agitated movement
forming a great contrast
to the calm of the
beginning. Â This
rhythmic drive comes to a
stop and is relieved by
the third section which
is a variation of the
beginning, but is a bit
longer and more
developed. Â This is
followed by the final
section which again
captures the agitation of
the second section and
brings the work to a wild
and most aggressive
end.—Samuel
Adler.

Lowel
l Liebermann's 4th String
Quartet was commissioned
by the Canandaigua Lake
Chamber Music Festival
and the Wood Library,
Canandaigua, NY, for the
Orion Quartet in
celebration of their 20th
Anniversary. The quartet
was premiered by the
Orions at the Canandaigua
Lake Chamber Music
Festival in Rochester, NY
on February 9th, 2008. To
quote the writer Mark
Greenberg: It's a
remarkable piece. The
mood is elegiacal and
meditative, the melodic
lines sinuous and
searching, the harmonies
rich and astonishingly
beautiful. Liebermann
works within the
traditions of Western
tonality, but that is a
mansion with many rooms.
Liebermann inhabits all
of them as his expressive
purposes require, and he
doesn't mind knocking
down a wall to create new
harmonic spaces. The
Fourth Quartet doesn't
exactly fit the
neoromantic niche into
which Liebermann is
sometimes placed. Much of
the music, especially
near the beginning, is a
highly advanced and fluid
chromatic expressionism
with modernist
tendencies. Sometimes
this roiling cloudscape
breaks open to allow a
patch of near-classical
harmony and
almost-resolution. Near
the midpoint the clouds
lift in leaping
modulations. Several
chordal passages recall
Russian Orthodox chant.
Suddenly, when you've
begun to think the
somber, deliberate pace
has gone on a bit too
long, Liebermann
introduces a kind of
hobbled, stilted jazz
idiom. The piece dies in
pensive quiet.
