Hanspeter
Kyburz works with three
fundamental formative
principles in his String
Quartet. Soloistic,
polyphonic and
integratively i.e.
homogeneously structured
tutti runs alternate with
one another, whereby the
form does not follow a
fixed pattern.
Multifaceted
correspondences and
motivic relationships
result from the interplay
of the individual
sections. The work was
given its much-applauded
first performance on 9
September 2004 at the
Berliner Festwochen. The
composer radically
revised his quartet after
the first performances.
From January 2005
onwards, all concerts
featuring the work will
be based on this new
version.

My Eighth

Quartets, begun in late
2017, are sonic cousins.
Akin to real cousins,
each piece exhibits
differing natures. They
were requested by two
ensembles that have
become asecond familiesa
to me: The Jupiter
Quartet of Urbana,
Illinois and the Amernet
Quartet based in Miami,
Florida. Their collective
dedication to, and care
for, our art remains a
personal and constant
are-fuelinga for me. The
quartets were
commissioned by, and
dedicated to, Margaret
and Philip Verleger of
Denver, Colorado.
Additional financial
support was provided by
the School of Music at
Stetson University,
Timothy Peter, Dean.
Quartet No.8 is laid out
in a classical
four-movement design. The
work does break somewhat
from conventional
tradition by often
placing quartet members
into soloistic roles as
the movement titles note.
individual The opening
piece presents at the
outset a three-note motto
which is turned over,
tumbled, and
energetically discussed,
primarily by a violin
duet. It is a duel. The
two players part company
only infrequently during
the movement's progress,
pausing briefly for other
commentary by their
alower cohortsa, the
Viola and Cello do not
argue, but abet their
friends' aeffortsa. The
piece's overall character
is fairly bright and
dancelike, closing in an
unresolvedastandoffa. not
Two principal
asound-objectsa stitch
the second movement
scherzo together: sliding
hands (glissandos) and a
plucked ashufflea
(pizzicato) - both
instigated by the (solo)
cellist. The others are
influenced - or are not -
by their aleadera, and
follow - or interrupt -
the cello throughout
their four-voiced
conversation. The third
movement (longest of the
set) is an elegy
dedicated to the memory
of a close personal
friend, the American
composer David Maslanka
(1943 - 2017). Its'
genesis is a simple
5-note melody derived
from my own name
(SaC/DaC/EaC/H). This
line commences in the
(solo) viola and is
obsessively uttered
without relief during the
movement's lamentations.
The closing movement
revisits much of that
opening three-note
material, but now dressed
up for the full quartet
to view. It is a slowly
accelerating romp which -
twice - cannot avoid a
nod to the Amernet and
Jupiter performers by
offering a humble bow to
the 4th movement of
Gustav Holst's PLANETS -
Jupiter: The Bringer of
Jollity. My quartet
serves as an honouring
salute of thanks for the
talent, respect, and
friendship of these two
young quartets. STRING
QUARTET No. 8 is roughly
22 minutes in duration.
It was written as an
homage to Franz Joseph
Haydn, my
adesert-island-composera,
and completed in Holly
Hill, Florida in early
April of 2019. S.H.

The
Austro-Hungarian composer
Erwin Schulhoff
(1894-1942) was musically
precocious: At the
suggestion of AntonÃn
Dvorák, he
receivedpiano lessons at
the age of seven, and at
the age of ten became a
student at the Prague
Conservatory. Further
piano studies in Vienna,
Cologne and Leipzig as
well as composition
lessons with Max Reger
supplemented his
education. His Jewish
heritage, which defamed
his music as
“degenerateâ€,
and his sympathy for
communism, however, cost
him his life. In Prague
and finally interned in
Wülzburg near
Weissenburg in Bavaria,
he died of tuberculosis.
Schulhoff's musical
significance lies in the
integration of jazz into
art music, for example in
his oratorio H.M.S. Royal
Oak or in his Hot Sonata
for alto saxophone and
piano. He earned his
living as a jazz pianist
for a long time. In
August 1922 he wrote four
short piano pieces, his
Rag Music, to which he
added four more phrases
in November: released as
Partita, also known as
Jazz-like Partita - with
the fashion dances
Ragtime, Foxtrott,
Shimmy, Boston and - as
No. 7 - a tango. From a
piano to a string quartet
movement, the arrangement
presents itself as a
delicate and smart,
technically not too
difficult sweet, suitable
as a diversion or
addition in a quartet
program.

Though a
piano can always be
included, it is not an
essential requirement for
the performance of these
settings: in some of the
carols, two violins or
two flutes are quite
sufficient, especially if
voices are used as well.
The following
combinations are
particularly suitable for
domestic music-making,
whether or not voices are
included as well:one
violin and piano,two
violins and piano,two or
three violins,violins and
recorders,two concert (C)
flutes (and an alto
flute) and - as the ideal
combination for
shepherds' songs -
flutes, violins, cello
and piano.Performing
groups and music schools
have the advantage of a
wider choice of forces
and the possibility of
varying the
instrumentation within
the individual carols and
verses. Thus large and
small combinations can
alternate, strings and
flutes can play in turn,
and finally the piano can
be used by itself or to
reinforce other
instrumental
combinations, in which
case the cello can be
added, too.The pieces are
graded in increasing
order of difficulty; the
first carols are chosen
so that they can be
mastered by violinists
after as little as 4 to 6
months of learning their
instrument. The choise
and sequence of the
carols in this book, and
also their keys, were
determined, amongst other
factors, by their
suitability for the start
of violin tuition, both
in first and in third
position, so that these
carols make an especially
good supplement of
Christmas music to the
violin method of Fritz
and Gottfried Scharlach
(with its principle of
starting with the third
position). The
progressively increasing
difficulty of the carols
has resulted, for
example, in the three
Advent carols (nos.
23-25) being placed later
in the collection.The
editor hopes that these
carols will be much
played and sung, and thus
help to fill the
Christmas season with joy
and splendour.Fritz
Scharlach, Salzburg,
December 1972
Our
beautiful Christmas
carols, old and new, are
presented here in
settings, ranging from
the easy to the more
difficult, for various
combinations of voices
and instruments that may
be available in domestic
music-making or for a
Christmas concert.
