The title of Paul Mealor's, Spectred Light refers to the ghostly lights sometimes seen at night or twilight over rivers or lakes. Tales of the 'Spectred Lights' can be found in numerous folk tales around the world, and it is often depicted as a malicious character in these stories. In Welsh folklore, it is said that the light is 'fairy fire' held in the hand of a 'pwca' - a small goblin-like fairy that leads lone travelers off the beaten path at night. As the traveller follows the pwca through the marsh, the fire is extinguished, leaving the man lost. This short work for Flute, Clarinet and Piano is an attempt to depict, through sound, this strange phenomenon. The piece flickers into life and, though a series of asymmetric variations, leads the listener into a maze of aural colours. As the music reaches breaking point, it disappears upwards and dissolves into metal wind-chimes. Out of this, a short respite is heard before the music finally hurtles into its finale - a blaze of virtuosity. He was one of the best known authors in Finland and his works were translated into 30 languages. 1908 in Helsinki, ? 26. August 1979 also in This is the story of the adventures of the doctor SinuheCrete and other regions of the known world at that time. who lived from 1390 to1335 B.C. who was initially the personal physician at the court of the Pharaoh Akhenaten before subsequently visiting Babylon, Waltari was inspired by the Ancient Egyptian text The Story of Sinuhe which is considered to be one of the earliest literary works (20th century B.C.). The author additionally undertook comprehensive historical studies, and the novel with its extensive cultural history and customs of the Orient in pre-Christian times became a worldwide success. The novel also gained recognition among Egyptologists. Sinuhe the Egyptian was in turn an inspiration for the composer Olli Mustonen to create a work for the 'archaic? instrument the oboe. The original version of this two-movement piece additionally fulfilled the composer's wish to dedicate a composition to his wife Sole who is also an oboist.The current version for flute was written for the Danish flutist Janne Thomsen. / Flûte

For Sophie Dufeutrelle, Professor of Flute at the Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villeurbanne, an intense pedagogical activity goes hand in hand with composition, an area in which she has received several commissions from esteemed soloists such as Maxence Larrieu and Philippe Bernold. Written in 2002 for a Flute Orchestra of around 20 instruments (from the Piccolo to the Octobass), Marine belongs to a tradition cherished by painters since the 16th century: the maritime landscape. The 1st movement (Mist) opens onto a lengthy section largely dedicated to improvisation in the spirit of Walter Thompson's soundpainting: using finger movements, the conductor signs to the musicians the type of motif (calm sea, swell, whistling buoys, seagulls and fishing boats) that will insert itself ad libitum between two lines of waves. The 2nd movement, more traditional, floats a Song of heartbreaking melancholy followed by a light, lively Dance that swirls the heart into joyful eddies. Written for intermediate-level flautists (with one part reserved for beginners), this piece, with its variety of atmospheres, concludes on a high note ' in the joy of making music together!

Agrestide, Op. 44 by Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) is a piece for Flute and Piano written for the Paris Conservatoire contest. Dedicated to Gaston Crunelle, a professor at the Paris Conservatoire, this piece is very difficult and was composed in 1942. Op. 44 is divided in 4 distinct parts: Moderato (like a Pastoral), Cadenza, Andantino, Anime and Piu Vivo. Agrestide, Op. 44 is really melodic and would also be perfect for a contest or recital. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prize for the Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He also composed several operas, chamber works and ballets, among others.

The Bluesier Side of Jazz by Andrew D. Gordon was inspired by the Piano students he teaches at Shepherd University School of Music in Los Angeles and is dedicated to those students: Jungwon, Yumiko, Yoko, Eunice, Sooji, Hae Ji and Ok Kyu. As with many students that come from a classical background (including himself) it is a difficult transition to learn to play Blues & Jazz. When a musician improvises they usually play a variety of riffs or phrases that they have developed and learnt over a period of time and can access these phrases instantaneously whatever key they are playing in to create a seamless improvised solo from the phrases they havelearnt. Andrew's idea for this book is to create phrases or riffs over two measures of various Blues progressions. He sub-divided each of the 12 Bar Blues progressions used in this book (the chord progression for Watermelon Man is a 16 measure progression) into six sections (two measures each) and within each of the six sections created four different phrases or riffs so that the student has a choice of four different phrases to play over every two measures. They can then create a solo based on which phrase they choose for each two measures. By breaking down these phrases to two measures each, he has found that the students have an easier time of learning to improvise than by trying to transcribe a whole solo from an audio recording or leaving them to their own devices in trying to play a solo based on the Blues scale or other related scales. Each of the ten examples are based on common Jazz/Blues chord progressions from Jazz songs such as 'Watermelon Man', 'Blue Monk', 'Tenor Madness', 'Route 66', 'Blue Trane', 'Bag's Groove' starting off with basic I-IV-V chords and increasing in complexity throughout the book. This piece is one of the most famous by this author and could be chosen as a contest or a recital work. Composed in 1903, Ballad is a one-movement piece which begins with a slow part and alternates with an Allegro section. This latter is the section of the main theme which demonstrates the range of the flute with expressive runs. The melody of the slow part keeps coming back along the piece, which finishes on it. This short suite, much inspired by Bartók's Six Romanian Folk Dances, is based on traditional dances and songs of Argentina. Although the original rhythms and melodies are often transformed by the use of contemporary techniques, the piece preserves the authentic spirit of each of these folk forms.Zamba de Vargas, a well known folk song, refers to a battle in Argentina between two armies of gauchos during the civil wars of the nineteenth century.Ojos Azules (Blue Eyes) is an introspective lament for lost love of Quichua origin (Northwest of Argentina).
