The Requiem
Mass in C Minor,
Cherubini's first, was
commissioned for the
anniversary of the
execution of Louis XVI by
the restored French
monarchy. The Requiem was
highly admired by the
public and critics as
well as by Mendelssohn,
Berlioz and Beethoven.
Cherubini sets a solemn
tone right from the
beginning by using the
lower Strings and winds
only to accompany the
Voices and continues to
display his inventiveness
with great effectiveness
throughout the work. The
thunder and lightning of
the Dies Irae, the
prayerful pianissimo
sections of the Agnus Dei
accompanied by ostinato,
the complete lack of
soloists are all
remarkable elements of
this historically
importantwork.Luigi
Cherubini was a composer,
conductor, teacher,
administrator and music
publisher who, though
born in Italy, dominated
the musical world of
Paris for nearly five
decades. His composing
life can be divided very
roughly into to phases:
the operatic phase during
the French Revolutionary
period and the equally
successful religious
music phase at the
beginning of the
Restoration afterwards.
His directorship of the
Paris Conservatoire
strengthened its position
at the peak of musical
education on the
Continent.

performing edition,
remained unknown to Bach
scholars until well into
the 20th century. The
evidence of its existence
is three fragments of the
first folio of Bach's
score, which can be dated
to the years 1728-1731.
By contrast, the
long-familiar expanded
new version of the
cantata with its powerful
opening chorus (BWV 80)
dates from the 1730s or
1740s. It only survives
in a copy of Bach's
score, but this allows
conclusions to be drawn
about the history of the
versions; thus, by using
the fragments mentioned
above, it has been
possible to reconstruct
the first version. This
result is a Bach cantata
which is less extensive
and in a more concise
normal format, with
reduced wind instruments.
A relaxed, contrapuntal
four-part chorale
movement with the first
and last verses of the
Lutheran hymn forms the
framework, and the other
movements are the same as
in the later new version.
This simpler cantata is
also entirely suitable
for celebrating
Reformation Day, as Bach

The
profound impression it
makes on us is due in
part to the sequence of
variations on a death
motif that seems to have
been borrowed from the
beginning of the second
Kyrie from Bach's Mass in
B minor. Written in 1890,
it was commissioned by
the publisher Novello for
the Birmingham Music
Festival and premiered
there under the direction
of the composer on 9
October 1891. For this
performance, Dvorak used
a copy of the score which
he had personally
examined and which later
served as the engraver's
copy. The Dvorak scholar
Klaus Doge succeeded in
tracking down its
location and evaluating
this important source for
the first time. It
contains the Fassung
letzter Hand and,
moreover, offers valuable
insights into Dvorak's
conducting workshop. It
served as the principal
source for the Breitkopf
Urtext
edition.
Dvorak's
Requiem is one of the
Czech composer's great
sacred works and one of
the greatest Requiem
settings in music
history.

funeral rites after the
death of King Augustus I.
of Saxony (Augustus the
Strong), Zelenka composed
the Requiem in D (ZWV 46)
and the Officium
Defunctorum (ZWV 47),
both integral parts of
the exequies for the
Saxon-Polish ruler.
Zelenka had to finish
this work in a great
hurry, and implemented -
suitable to the occasion
- an impressing abundance
of sound colors and
inventiveness: muted
trumpets and horns,
chalumeau, obligate
fagotti as well as
extremely virtuoso solo
parts and fully developed
counterpoints in the
choral settings. With the
present Urtext edition
David Erler is closing
one of the last gaps in
the series of large-scale
sacred works of Zelenka
in Breitkopf & Hartel's
