For many choral singers Jesu, meine Freude is not just a motet by Bach, but the motet par excellence. Bach's motets as a whole have to be described as exceptional works, but even amongst these this is an exceptional work which is out of the ordinary not only in terms of its length. The formal conception, with its alternating chorale and Bible verses in 11 sections in a symmetrical structure, is also unique. The motet was very probably composed for a funeral, but no further details about this are known. By comparison, there are clear indications that the motet, as we now know it, was probably not composed in one go, but was composed over a long period of time. THE BONES OF MR. FORTUNE (FREE AT LAST!) is an 11-minute concerto-like work for solo flute accompanied by symphonic winds and percussion – perfect to play with band or with orchestra, as well as with the composer’s own piano reduction. The work features lengthy cadenzas, and exhilarating dance-like sections with the ensemble. Hailstork describes the historical inspiration: Abused in life and death, an enslaved man (Mr. Fortune) was owned by a surgeon who preserved his skeleton to study anatomy. The bones remained with the doctor’s family for generations, and were given a proper burial making national news in 2013, 215 years after Mr. Fortune’s death.
Abused in life and death, an enslaved man known as Mr. Fortune was honored with an elaborate funeral more than 200 years after he died in Connecticut.Mr. Fortune was owned by Dr. Preserved Porter on a farm in Waterbury, Connecticut. When Fortune died in 1798, Porter, a bone surgeon, preserved his skeleton by having the bones boiled to study anatomy at a time when cadavers for medical study were disproportionately taken from slaves, servants and prisoners.One of Porter’s descendants gave the skeleton in 1933 to Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, where it was displayed from the 1940s until 1970. The descendant referred to the slave as “Larry” and his name was forgotten at the time.A study by forensic anthropologists at the Quinnipiac University School of Medicine concluded that Fortune was about 5 feet 5 inches tall and died at around 55 years old. He suffered a number of painful ailments, including a fracture in his left hand, a severe ankle sprain and lower back pain. “He was an individual who was in considerable distress,” a forensic professor, Richard Gonzalez said.I was taken by the bizarre story of Mr. Fortune and decided to use it as the stimulus for this work.

In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme: these movements not only elaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. Cantata BWV 127 belongs to the cycle of chorale cantatas which Bach performed in 1724/25 in Leipzig. It bears close links to the St John Passion, which was performed on Good Friday 1725 in its second version. In formal terms and in the interpretation of the text and its orchestration, it is one of the most astonishing vocal works by Bach. The opening chorus, with its multi-layered construction, is nothing less than a preliminary version for the chorale fantasia O Mensch bewein dein Sunde gross. The aria Die Seele ruht in Jesu Handen is distinguished by its exquisite scoring: a solo oboe and the soprano form a duet, whilst the background comprises delicate chords on recorders and continuo, intended to symbolize funeral bells. A solo trumpet gives the following movement particular brilliance. The words Ich breche mit starker und helfender Hand unmistakably anticipate the chorus Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden from the St Matthew Passion. New revised edition. Motet Komm, Jesu, komm, BWV 229, for double choir, was most likely composed for a funeral written in Leipzig and first performed in 1731-32. It's biblical text was written as a poem by Paul Thymich. Mr. Sauer has done a magnificent job transcribing all six of Bach's choral motets BWV 225-230 for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. This is a major undertaking. All are very worthy additions to the Trombone Ensemble repertoire. This work for 8-part Trombone ensemble is in two movements and about 7 1/2 minutes in length. This music is appropriate for advanced performers. The top two voices have parts supplied in both alto and tenor clef.
