For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11, 1727, Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was, according to all reports, one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received, and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem #2 ('The King Shall Rejoice'), although less well-known than Anthem #1, is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. This work contains an opening Allegro, brilliant and elegant rather than pompous - a grandiose setting of 'Glory and great worship hast thou laid upon him' - and a lively fugal Alleluia as a conclusion. Donizetti's Anna Bolena premiered at Milano's Teatro Carcano during Carnival season 1830-31 is considered the composer's first major success in serious opera, which brought him to the attention of all Europe. In terms of production, in Italy he was an anomaly, in that he remained actively involved in the evolution of his works and the performances of them, and went on making modifications to those works. Written expressly for the interpretative and vocal talents of great singers like Giuditta Pasta and Giovan Battista Rubini, the historically-based 'lyrical tragedy? by librettist Felice Romani is a classic of Lombard Romanticism. The present reduction for voice and piano derives from the critical edition of the score, recently published in this catalog: is based on the autograph score, (housed in the Ricordi Archives in Milan), on the libretto for the premiere, on the first vocal scores printed editions (Lucca and Ricordi in Milan and Marquerie Frères in Paris) and additional manuscript scores with autograph additional notes (housed in Naples and Rome). This edition presents for the first time all the music composed by Donizetti, in particular the sections crossed out or replaced either immediately before or after the first performances. The new reduction of Il barbiere di Siviglia is based on the critical edition of the full score by Alberto Zedda that, republished in 2009, appeared in turn as a fully revised edition - in the light of new sources and updated philological criteria - of the historic and pioneering critical edition of 1969. The 1969 Barbiere di Siviglia was based on the autograph and on manuscript and printed sources still considered primary: the copies from Giovanni Battista Cencetti (now kept at the New York Public Library, at the Bibliomediateca of Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome, at the Biblioteca Palatina in Parma and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris), the copies from Naples, Florence, the main score and vocal scores of the time, the fi rst printed libretto, many manuscript copies of Aureliano in Palmira, work in which Zedda recognized the source of the Symphony of Il Barbiere di Siviglia. To these in 2009 were added all the materials found and transcribed by Zedda after the publication of the volume of 1969. In the Appendices of this edition are published for the fi rst time in vocal score all the new materials added between 1969 and 2009, among them: the aria added for Rosina 'Ah se è ver? (Appendix II), an alternative aria for Rosina for the lesson scene 'La mia pace, la mia calma? (Appendix III), an alternative aria for Bartolo 'Manca un foglio? (Appendix IV) and the vocal autograph variants for NN. 5, 7, 16 (Appendix I).
