Mark My Words,
originally for tuba (but
just as fun to play on
clarinet), was composed
by James Grant in
February of 2007 as a
heartfelt gift to his
great friend and staunch
musical ally, tubist Mark
Nelson, in celebration of
their first collaboration
fourteen years earlier
(Three Furies for solo
tuba). Grant writes, When
I began composing Mark My
Words, I told Mark to be
prepared for something
fun that sounded like
Charlie Brown doing a
funky bossa nova (think
jazz pianist/composer
Vince Guaraldi's Linus
and Lucy). I did not tell
him that the middle
section of Mark My Words
would make overt
references to all of the
principal shapes, motives
and themes from the Three
Furies - my way of
thanking Mark Nelson,
specifically, for opening
wide the door of
composing for tuba and
euphonium those many
years ago and for so
enthusiastically
escorting me over that
threshold. I am but one
of many grateful
composers whom Mark has
supported over the years
by commissioning, then
recording their music.
Mark My Words is my
humble attempts at giving
back to this devoted
educator, consummate
musician, fervent
promoter of new music for
tuba, and - yes - kickass
player..

When I was
approached to compose a
work for brassband and
church organ I already
envisioned the concept I
would use. It would
indeed literally become a
work for brassband and
organ. Without the
traditional solos, the
organ would form an
addition to the brassband
orchestration as would
the brassband provide an
extra register for the
organ. In short a
homogeneous entity. The
most important reason for
doing this is quite
simple. Since this work
can only be performed in
a church and because of
the specific acoustics of
the church, the brassband
would sound in al its
tone colour like an
organ. By using certain
registers of the organ
and combining these with
the brassband a
wonderfulsound palette
can be created. The use
of complementary or
contrasting tone quality
is also possible. The
primary theme of this
composition is based on
these three methods of
“colouring”. As far
as structure is concerned
this work consists of two
parts. slow fast. It is
built on a number of
motifs in which some
behave like a consecutive
canon. In the fast
movement the primary
motif develops into a
fugue-like section. The
canon and fugato are
techniques frequently
used in classical and
contemporary organ
literature. The liberal
use of structure and
motif has lead to the
title. “Fantasy for
Brassband and Organ”.

werd een compositie te
maken voor brassband en
kerkorgel stond mij
direct een duidelijk
concept voor ogen. Het
zou inderdaad een werk
gaan worden voor
brassband en orgel in de
letterlijke zin vanhet
woord. Geen traditioneel
solowerk maar het orgel
als uitbreiding van de
brassbandbezetting en de
brassband als een extra
register van het orgel.
Kortom, een homogeen
geheel. De belangrijkste
reden hiervoor is simpel.
Het werkkan eigenlijk
alleen in een kerk worden
uitgevoerd en een
brassband, in een kerk
met zijn specifieke
akoestiek, klinkt in al
zijn kleurschakeringen
als een orgel. Door het
orgel in een bepaalde
registratie te laten
klinken kan,in combinatie
met de brassband, een
prachtige mengklank tot
stand worden gebracht.
Ook kan worden gekozen
voor een klank die
aanvullend is of
contrasterend. Deze drie
manieren van
“kleuren” is het
belangrijkste thema van
de compositie.Wat vorm
betreft bestaat het werk
uit twee delen. langzaam
snel. Het is opgebouwd
uit een aantal motieven
waarvan sommige zich
gedragen als een snel
opvolgende canon. In het
snelle deel wordt het
belangrijkste motief
uitgebreidtot een
fugato-achtig gedeelte.
De canon en het fugato
zijn technieken die zowel
in de klassieke, als de
hedendaagse
orgelliteratuur veel
worden gebruikt. Het vrij
omgaan met de vorm en de
motieven heeft geleid tot

I fell
in love with the
remarkable singing of the
Tenores di Bitti on
hearing their recordings
as a student. Their
uniquely intense vocal
timbre, their harmony,
which seemed pure and
rough at once, and the
sense that this music
was, at root, not so much
about performance as
simply being together in
the world, in a community
of spirit. At the time, I
had no intention of using
this music to my own
creative ends, but now,
here we are: Sardinian
Songbook is the second in
a cycle of works for the
Ligeti Quartet, all based
on transcriptions of
music from different
throat-singing
traditions. Like string
quartets, the tenores
usually sing in groups of
four voices, but being
free from instruments
they stand very close
together enabling the
resonances of their
voices to blend and
interact in a special
way. The quartet, of
course, can only sit so
close before their bows
clash, so I have chosen
instead to reflect this
physical closeness
inversely, by getting the
players to stand
increasingly far from one
another as the piece
progresses. In so doing,
the initial state of
sonic blend gives way to
hocketing lines, opening
up the sense of

days of Renaissance
composers - beyond
accusations of plagiarism
- the admiration for a
fellow composer has taken
the form of quotations
from his works or even
new versions of his
works. No less a work
from the classical period
than Joseph Haydn's
oratorio The Creation
(first performed in
1798), was the basis for
the Schopfungsmesse
(Creation Mass) by the
Salzburg Court and
Cathedral Music Director,
Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard
the oratorio in Salzburg
performances conducted by
Johann Michael Haydn in
1800. With great skill
and sensitivity Gatti was
able to underlay the
choruses and arias of The
Creation with the text of
the Mass (at times he
reduced and adapted the
instrumentation), without
doing harm to the admired
