Gerard de Nerval. Hector
Berlioz.
Llio was
composed during Berlioz's
stay in Italy in 1831. In
April of that year he set
out from Rome, where he
held a scholarship as
winner of the Prix de
Rome, and travelled as
far as Nice on hearing
that his fiancee Camille
Moke had rejected him in
favour of another suitor.
He had intended to return
to Paris to exact
revenge, but then he
abandoned his plan and
instead spent three weeks
in Nice, returning in
stages to Rome. On this
return journey he
conceived the idea of a
semi-theatrical work that
combined music and
monologues to express the
idea of returning to life
after a profound
traumatic experience.
The composition
was finished in Rome in
Iune 1831. In the spring
of 1832, while staying
with his parents in
Dauphin, Berlioz copied
the orchestral and vocal
parts, and the work was
first performed in
conjunction with the
Symphonie fantastique at
the Paris Conservatoire
on 9 December 1832. It
was heard again three
weeks later and again on
3 May 1835.
While
designated as the second
part of the Episode in
the Life of an Artist,
Lelio can never- theless
be performed on its own,
without the Symphonie
fantastique to precede
it.

French
composer, Robert Planel
(1908-1994) was the son
of composer and founder
of the Music School of
Montelimar, Alphonse
Planel. Planel junior was
an exceptionally
accomplished musician,
which is reflected in his
composition, Romantic
Suite for alto saxophone
and piano. The sixth
movement of Romantic
Suite, Song of the
Muleteer is a charming
piece for intermediate
level saxophonists. With
a typical performance
lasting about three and a
half minutes, Planel's
Song of the Muleteer
addresses a wide range,
dotted rhythms,
articulation, dynamics,
tempo changes, key
changes and variety in
performance directions.
Planel's Romantic Suite
is an exciting addition
to the modern repertoire
of the saxophone and
cannot be missed by
aspiring
saxophonists.

Antonio
Valente blind,
Neapolitan since a
long time according
to the list of Neapolitan
musicians by Scipione
Cerreto and organist in
S. Angelo a Nilo in
Naples, is known in
modern times for his two
volumes of keyboard
music: Versi
spirituali published
in 1580 and, some years
before, the volume here
in transcription,
Intavolatura de
cimbalo, printed by
Giuseppe Cacchio in
1576. This volume has
many original features:
first keyboard tablature
ever printed in Naples,
itâ??s not written in
musical characters but in
a number-based system
never met, according to
the current studies, in
any other print or
manuscript both in and
outside Italy. The
dedication letter,
written by Fraâ??
Alberto Mazza, praises
Valente as the inventor
of this writing method,
so easy and effective
that everybody, even
uncouth youths that did
not know music and
keyboard, could attain
the result of playing
from it in two
months. The
Intavolatura presents
different genres of
music: a fantasia, six
ricercatas, a Salve
Regina on a cantus
firmus, four vocal
chansons
intabulated for keyboard
with more or less
diminutions,and nine
dances, variations and
dance/variations on
long-living tenors like
Romanesca or
Zefiro. There are
no liturgical
compositions, both
because unsuitable in a
collection for amateurs
and because Valente will
publish a new book of
sacred music in a few
years. The book is a
sort of compendium of the
keyboard genres of the
period, similar to some
older Spanish
publications and to the
later Neapolitan ones by
Trabaci and Majone. Other
contemporary volumes on
the contrary choose to
present a single type of
composition: this is the
case of the
Versetti by
Valente and the
Ricercate by Rocco
Rodio.

This
is the first ever
complete published
edition of a major
madrigal collection that
is essential to our
understanding of the
fruitful interaction of
Renaissance Italian and
English music.
In four, five and six
voices, the 57 pieces of
Musica
Transalpina include
51 madrigals by Marenzio,
Palestrina and others,
the two parts of Byrd's
'La virginella', and four
French chansons.
Uniquely, the anthology
also features singing
translations of the
original poems from the
Italian into the
vernacular, for which it
was widely admired and
circulated. As a printed
source from which
composers could learn the
madrigal style and
aesthetic, it was hugely
influential in inspiring
the 'golden age' of Tudor
and Jacobean vocal
music.
An
important addition to
The English
Madrigalists series,
Musica
Transalpina of 1588
is not only of great
scholarly interest but is
also an outstanding
addition to the
repertoire that will
delight contemporary
singers no less than it
enthralled those
Elizabethans who first
responded with such
enthusiasm to its fine
music and accessible
'Englished' texts.

Watermelo
n Sugar was the
summer hit of the year
2020. It is a song by the
British singer-songwriter
Harry Styles, who felt
inspired by the title of
the American novel In
Watermelon Sugar
(1968) by Richard
Brautigan.The melody of
the chorus had already
taken form during
â??Live on Tourâ??, the
debut tour that Styles
embarked on in September
2017, finishing in July
the following year. On a
free day, Harry and his
band went to The Cave
Studio inNashville, where
they created the chorus
melody. It is said that
the song is about
Stylesâ?? ex-girlfriend
Camille Rowe. Mike
Sheppard arranged this
catchy tune for a
flexible (six-part)
ensemble as a lasting
memory of
theextraordinary year
2020.
