baritone, and a prolific
composer of original
works. FROM THE SOUTHLAND
is a suite of six
atmospheric scenes of the
American south, inspired
by Black musical and
cultural traditions. FROM
THE SOUTHLAND is within
reach of intermediate
pianists and artistically
suited for professional
recitals. In 1835,
Henry T.
Burleigh’s
maternal grandfather
purchased his own release
from slavery for the sum
of $50, and traveled
north out of Maryland to
begin a new life as a
free man. He established
his family in Ithaca, NY,
and then moved to the
bustling lakefront city
of Erie, PA, where three
decades later his
grandson Henry would be
born and raised.For
Burleigh, the
“Southlandâ€
that inspired this
collection of piano
sketches was a distant
place that could not have
been more different from
the physical world he
knew, up there in the
northern snowbelt. And
yet these southern
landscapes and vignettes
must have been intensely
present in his
consciousness, absorbed
through the stories and
songs he first learned at
his grandfather’s
knee.The music of the
South – the
spirituals and work songs
he heard as a child
–would travel with
Burleigh throughout his
long and illustrious
musical life. Even as he
progressed through his
early classical training,
his career as a baritone
soloist in Erie’s
churches and synagogue,
his move to New York to
study at the National
Conservatory of Music,
and his rise to national
prominence as a concert
soloist, these ancestral
melodies stayed firmly
centered in his musical
identity.When he wrote
From the Southland, his
only composition for solo
piano, Burleigh was just
beginning his career as a
composer. The art songs

known composers in the

Quartet No. 5 consists of
two contrasting
movements. The first
movement, being present,
immediately leads to an
atmosphere of high
emotional tension. The
prevailing atmospheric
elements of the music are
dramatic and passionate,
alternating with each
other like a
kaleidoscope. In contrast
to that, a second theme
is intoned three times -
an invitation, a memory
of the existence of
another world, a
light-house which
illuminates the twilight
in which we live so
often. But this
invitation remains
unheard. The first
movement concludes with
dissonances in the upper
register - a cry of utter
desperation.The second
movement, so distant ...
yet so near, is the calm,
unhurried vocal section
of the quartet. A
forgiving, loving look at
a world tortured by grief
and contradictions.
Gradually, the singing
becomes more personal,
more emotional and more
dramatic. The rhythmic
figure of a funeral march
in the recapitulation of
the second movement is a
gesture of loss.
Eventually, the quartet
loses itself in an
atmosphere of
light-filled grief.

Air
Balloon!: One vivid
memory I have as a child
is of the day that a hot
air balloon passed over
our house and made an
emergency landing on the
road in front! The sound
of the gas being blown
into the balloon to try
to keep it high enough to
pass the house sounded so
loud and intimidating,
and then there was the
bustle of the neighbours
as we all went out into
the street to watch. It
was both terrifying and
exhilarating to watch the
balloon float past and
then land so near
by.
Buzzards
Circling: There is
something so calming and
restful about watching
birds of prey circling in
the thermal currents of a
summer sky. Growing up in
the Chilterns gave me
plenty of opportunity to
watch buzzards and red
kites. This piano solo
captures the beauty of
their flight as they
glide so effortlessly
through the
air.
There’
s A Cow In The Garden
Eating The Flowers:
Inspired by the memory of
seeing an unexpected cow
in the garden! This
surreal image is captured
in a quirky waltz, as I
portray both the
absurdity of the moment
and the sense of wonder I
felt as a child, looking
out of the window and
seeing the cow walking
round and eating the
flowers. The final phrase
articulates my longing:
‘I wish it would
come
again’.
Wat
ching The World Go By: A
short, reflective piece,
remembering what it was
like to have time to just
sit and watch the world
go by from my bedroom
window.
Autumn
Skies: A miniature about
the beauty of Autumn
skies and the poignant
sense of loss for a
summer gone. Friends I
was fortunate to have
several children of my
own age living close by.
We seemed to be forever
making dens, playing out
in the street and
generally enjoying each
other’s company.
This piece reflects that
sense of
well-being.
Snake
In The Pond: One hot
summer I was astonished
and scared to see a grass
snake cooling off in our
garden pond! I watched,
both horrified and
fascinated, as it rose up
from the depths and then
disappeared again. Here I
portray the sense of the
hazy summer afternoon as
I peacefully watched the
tiny movements of fish in
the pond, contrasted with
the fear and excitement
of seeing the snake
appear.
Morning
Commute: I recollect many
mornings stuck in traffic
as my Dad took me to
school on his way to
work. There is one main
road out of the village
where I grew up, and that
got more and more
congested the closer we
got to the town. We may
not have chatted a lot,
but it was always good to
be together with my Dad,
lost in our own
thoughts.
The
Witch’s Cottage:
My siblings and I had a
fascination with a small
cottage nearby. It was
set back from the road in
a dark part of the woods
and we called it 'the
witch's cottage’.
Every time we passed, I
imagined I heard the
distant cackle of the
witch and wished I could
catch a glimpse of
her.
These pieces
are written to complement
my other collection,
Night Time Impressions,
which also draw on
childhood recollections,
particularly of the woods
behind the house where I

and when it splashes, it
tends to run wildly. In

music attempts to conjure

this movement, a cello
cadenza emerges,
introducing an
introspective type of
melodicism. The third
movement, The Poignancy
of Memory, contains many
silences as it tries to
convey memory through
fragmented remembrances
much like often occur in
our dream state.
Progressing through
several slowly building
images, it gradually
works itself into
juxtaposition of musical
images. Towards the
movement's end, high
harmonics are sounding in
all four instruments
while left hand pizzicato
notes in the cello pluch
the last remembrances of
this central core. Almost
imperceptibly, the viola
assumes leadership as it
dissolves into: The
fourth movement, The
Fluidity of Motion, which
has mostly the viola, but
also the cello,
articulating lyrical
statements against the
sheets of sound conjured
up by the two violins
playing a flood of
swirling figures, evokes
a kind of static motion
in spae. Here, the
virtually imperceptible
manner in which this
hushed whisper continues
incessantly, can suggest
the potential fluidity
with which movement may

, two fairly extended

spontaneous dialogue

title suggests, Childhood
Shattered is program
music. A simple and
graceful tune,
symbolizing childhood, is
abruptly interrupted by a
horrific, dissonant
chord. The tune returns ;
but the echo of the
chord, still lingering in
the background, tells us
that the memory of the
traumatic event persists.
Life has darkened.
Nothing is as it was
before. The initial
melody wanders into keys
ever stranger and more
distant, ultimately
arriving at a new theme,
obsessive, with grating
seconds and thrusting
accents. This shattered
childhood and its
episodes of aimlessness,
will it give birth to new
certainties? The
piece is an exercise in
contrasting detached
notes with tied

Toccata (2004)
This piece by Caroline
Charrière issues from
the historical lineage of
the toccata,
traditionally an exercise
of dexterity
characterized by repeated
musical motifs. The
introduction is
constructed of subtly
displaced upper-register
chords in the right hand
that alternate with two
lower notes in the left
hand, creating an almost
meditative preamble. In
the rapid section of the
piece, the performer
playfully exploits the
keyboard's full breadth
in the course of spirited
dialogues between notes
high and low.

texts of the French
author Anne-Marie Albiach
have long been the point
of departure for my
works. Following the
viola concerto <<
monstrueuse vecut dans le
cadre >> la memoire,
which is based on her <<
H II>> lineaires, the
three texts entitled <<
une geometrie >> have
generated a new cycle. As
in the other two works of
the cycle, << figurations
de memoire >> is
predicated on two
different readings of the
text: on the one hand a
(private) reading by
Anne-Marie Albiach in
which time is measured
[demarcated] out; while
on the other hand the
graphic text is measured
millimeter by millimeter.
The latter serves as the
basis - the genetic code
- for the temporal,
horizontal structure of
the quintet, whereas the
reading of the author
appears in rhythmic
surfaces which interrupt
the horizontal plane. In
<< figurations de memoire
>> two clearly
recognizable elements are
repeated: the tone b
(which plays a central
roll in most of my works)
and a chord of fifths
built around the tone b -
a piece of memory
(memoire) from viola
concerto. In contrast,
the extended chords of
the reading consist of
five tones which in their
frequencies are
equidistant from each
other (like an overtone
chord). For the
generation of tone
materials the chords of
both levels are
compressed and stretched
within the ranges
(frames) of tones from
which the horizontal
positions of the text
fragments are derived:
lower, borderline tones
on the left margin, and
higher borderline tones
on the right margin. Thus
the disposition on the
page, essential for
Anne-Marie Albiach (and
first introduced in
poetry by Mallarme in Un
coup de des jamais
n'abolire le hasard), is
rendered in sound.
Naturally each element of
the text serves to mold
structure and dynamic, to
include typography:
fragments within
quotation marks, in
italics, etc., yield
different sonorous images
[sonorities] and
movements. Each word from
the typographical reading
is orchestrated
[instrumentated]
differently, which is
important for the whole
cycle (however, the
chords of the spoken
reading are always played
by five instruments; here
only speech and pauses in
speech [[interruptions of
speech]are distinguished
from each other). Thus a
tight network of
instrumental combinations
is created in which, word
for word, the text is
made audible. The most
important element in the
process: the vertical,
synchronized playing
together of the
individual instruments
(Synchorniestudie),
ranging from solo to
