1770, in Dreux
(Eure-et-Loir), from a
distinguished family,
learnt music as an
entertainment art, and
was obliged to make it a
resource for his
existence, after the
troubles of the
Revolution in 1789. He
had acquired a remarkable
talent for the harp; when
he arrived in Paris he
made a very good
impression. Then, man of
the world, knowledgeable
in many fields, which is
rare for a musician, he
was welcome everywhere,
and very soon came in
friendly terms with some
of the most renowned
artists and men of
letters of his times. The
marriage certificate of
the poet Legouve (15
pluviose of the year XI,
or February 1803, 12th
municipality of Paris),
shows that Dalvimare was
one of his best men and
that at the time he was
thirty-two years old. He
became harpist of the
Opera in the year VIII
(1800), and was
definitively confirmed in
the month of fructidor of
the year IX. At the time
of the institution of the
emperor Napoleon's
private music, M.
Dalvimare was appointed
as his harpist. In
September 1807 he
obtained the title of
harp master of the
empress Josephine. A
lucky change of his
fortune allowed this
artist to renounce to
practise his talent for
living, he resigned from
all of his positions on
March, 12th, 1812, and he
retired in Dreux, where
he still was living in
1837. For a peculiar
weakness, he does not
like to speak about his
artist career, which had
been entirely honourable,
and he would like to
forget his success too.
His first composition was
a symphonie concertant
for harp and horn, which
he composed with Frederic
Duvernoy, and published
in the year VII (1798);
notwithstanding, he
counted as his first opus
a collection of romances
with accompaniment of
piano or harp, which he
later published with
Pleyel.
In 1809
Dalvimare composed, for
the theatre Feydeau, a
one-act opera-comique
called The Marriage for
Imprudence. The music was
weak; the work did not
succeed, and people used
to say that the greatest
imprudence had been the
one of the authors who
had it performed.
Nevertheless, the score
of this opera was
published in Paris by
erard. (Francois-Joseph
Fetis).

Christian Bach, the
youngest son of Johann
Sebastian Bach, the
Kantor of St. Thomas's,
left behind the Lutheran
musical tradition of his
family: he went to Italy,
converted to Catholicism
there and successfully
composed operas for
Turin, Milan and Naples.
Frequently overlooked are
the Catholic Bach's
exquisite church music
works, almost all written
in the years 1757-1760,
and which had a
significant influence on
his time in Italy. These
include large-scale
Vesper settings with
impressive,
symphonic-style
instrumental
introductions, sometimes
anticipating Mozartian
idioms. Bach's Domine ad
adjuvandum me, an
immediately captivating
work, was written for the
opening of Vespers; it
seems to be carried along
by a sense of euphoric

Excel’ was
commissioned by the AD
Concert Band, from
Solihull in the UK, to
celebrate their 40th
Anniversary in 2016. The
title, Ad Excel,
is a play on words: it is
Latin for ‘to
excel’ but also
celebrates the
band’s anniversary
as XL is 40 in Roman
numerals. The work opens
with a bright fanfare
with frequent changes of
meter. This leads to a
playful main subject,
played first by
woodwinds, followed by
full band. A bridge
passage leads to a legato
second subject, played
twice. The bridge passage
returns to introduce the
both main melodies in new
keys and instrumentations
before a coda, derived
from the opening fanfare,
brings the work to a
close.

TENEBRAE was commissioned
by the Turku (Abo) Music
Festival and composed for
Finnish guitarist Timo
Korhonen, whom I had
known and admired for a
long time. Timo gave a
brillant premiere of
TENEBRAE in Turku on
August 13, 1991 and has
played it several times
since then. The title is
Latin, and means darkness
or gloom, but it also
refers to the Roman
Catholic matins and lauds
services in Holy Week.
These are held as dusk
falls, and the idea is
that the sixteen candles
that are burning at the
beginning of the service
are gradually
extinguished until, after
sixteenprayers, the
church is in darkness.
The same development is
carried through
inTENEBRAE by musical
means, so that we have
not yet had to resort to
acandlelit setting -
although it is by no
means out of the
question. The piece makes
extensive use of the
guitar's properties for
revealing quiet, intimate
feelings, although
naturally in a work of
this scope there is
contrasting material

marked the 50th year of
Yutaka Nishida’s
involvement with bands as
a player, conductor and
radio presenter. The
ceremonial Song of
Friendship opens with
an extended fanfare,
largely featuring the
brass section. This leads
to the main theme, which
develops slowly until it
is played by the full
band. A change of key
signals a contrasting
central section
containing a quiet
woodwind chorale, which
grows until the return of
the triumphant sounding
main theme. Elements of
the opening fanfare then
close the
work.

Wooley and funded by a
grant from Leslie and
Cathy Anderson for the
Central Kentucky Concert
Band to celebrate their
40th anniversary in 2016.
This energetic overture
opens with an
introduction loosely
based on 'bluegrass'
chords before a slower,
legato chorale appears in
the clarinets and flutes.
This is short-lived and
soon a new mood is
introduced, based on a
repeated-note
accompaniment. This leads

Bluegrass Overture is
geschreven voor de
Central Kentucky Concert
Band ter gelegenheid van
hun veertigjarig bestaan
in 2016. De opdracht komt
van Gabriel Wooley en is
gefinancierd door een
gift van Leslie en Cathy
Anderson. Deze energieke
ouverture opent met
bluegrass-akkoorden,
waarna in de klarinetten
en fluiten een langzamer,
legato koraal naar voren
komt. Het wordt al snel
gevolgd door een nieuw
sfeerbeeld, dat is
gebaseerd op een
begeleiding van herhaalde
noten. Hier komt het
hoofdthema uit voort, dat
zwaar gesyncopeerd is en
bluesachtige invloeden
laat horen. In het
middengedeelte klinkt een
zangerige melodie met
frequente modulaties,
waarna hethoofdthema weer
opduikt en ons meevoert
naar een glorierijke
presentatie van de eerder
gespeelde koraalmelodie.

und von Leslie und Cathy
Anderson finanziell
unterstutzt. Diese
energiegeladene Ouverture
beginnt mit einer
Einleitung mit lockeren
Bluegrass-Akkorden, bevor
ein langsamer Choral im
Legato in den Klarinetten
und Floten erklingt. Das
ist jedoch nur von kurzer
Dauer, denn schon bald
wird durch eine
Begleitung mit
repetierten Noten eine
neue Stimmung erzeugt.
Dies fuhrt schliesslich
zum Hauptthema mit
deutlichen Synkopen und
Blues-Modulationen. Die
zentrale Passage zeichnet
sich durch eine kantable
Melodie aus, die
haufigdie Tonart
wechselt, bevor das
Hauptthema wiederkehrt
und zu einer triumphalen
Prasentation der
vorherigen Choralmelodie
hinleitet.

principal, tres syncope,
aux inflexions de blues.
La section du milieu
comprend une melodie
lyrique qui change de
tonalite frequemment,
avant que le retour du
theme principal nousmene
a une presentation
triomphale de la melodie
de choral entendue plus
tot.

dal movimento ampio
caratterizzata da accordi
in stile bluegrass prima
di un corale lento e
legato affi dato ai
clarinetti e ai flauti,
di breve durata, e presto
sostituito da una nuova
atmosfera, scandita da un
accompagnamento con note
ribattute. Questo conduce
a un tema principale,
molto sincopato, con
inflessioni blues. Una
sezione centrale dalla
melodia cantabile che
cambia spesso tonalita
anticipa la ricomparsa
del tema principale, che
conduce a sua volta a una
trionfale riproposizione
della melodia corale.
