Kocsar. Hungary has
a thousand-year-old
tradition of reverence
for the Virgin Mary. In
the course of the
centuries the Church has
found more and more
occasions for the
celebration of Mary. The
greatest is the
celebration of Mary?s
assumption into heaven,
which coincides with the
anniversary of the death
of Saint Stephen, on
August 15. The texts of
these choral works
originate from various
supplicatory prayers from
the office, vocal texts
and hymns. The six choral
works don?t form a cycle,
since the texts are
associated with different
liturgies. The choruses:
Regina caeli ? antiphon
for Easter, Sub tuum
praesidium ? antiphon,
Maria Mater gratiae ?
short hymn, Ave Regina
caelorum ? antiphon for
Lent, Ave maris stella ?
Hymn to Mary, Virgo

Text language:
Latin. Mezzalira
places his worked
entirely in the tradition
of Catholic church music:
Gregorian elements are
associated likewise with
Palestrina's counterpoint
and Bruckner's sonorous
expansin. Thoroughly in
the tradition of the
motet, the Memorare is
structured in four
sections, each in
accordance with their
respective texts. This
large structured
composition begins in C
minor from the depths of
the men's voices,
building to a song of
lamentation which
increases to an
harmonically enriched E
flat major passage on the
words virgo maria. In the
second section,
harmonically in A flat
major, Mezzalira places
the upper and lower
voices in a double choir
opposed to each other in
block-like manner in
order to develop
resonating cantilenas in
the third part, which is
in F major. After a very
simple, tender four-part
setting of a hymn the
composition ends with an
Amen with large modally
enriched chords in D
major. $6.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

''Stabat
Mater'' by Karol
Szymanowski for solo
voices, chorus and
orchestra, Op. 53, is one
of the most famous and,
at the same time, most
personal works of the
composer, making its
appeal to the audience
through the depth of its
expression and sheer
artistry. The first
sketches of the work were
made in the spring of
1925, while work on the
full score occupied the
composer from 20 January
to 2 March 1926. Józef
Jankowskis Polish
translation of the
medieval sequence formed
the basis of the
composition. This text,
which was simple in a
folk-like way, devoid of
pathos but full of
religious zeal,
harmonized perfectly from
the poetic point of view
with the composers
creative design. In an
interview for the monthly
Muzyka Szymanowski
stated: ''in its Polish
vestments that eternal,
naive hymn was filled for
me with its own immediate
expressive content; it
became something painted
in colours which were
recognisable and
comprehensible as
distinct from the black
and white of the archaic
original'' (''A Footnote
to Stabat Mater'', Muzyka
1926, Nos. 11/12). In the
score, the Latin text is
given beside the Polish
text, making it possible
for the work to be
performed more easily by
foreign performers. In
this work, the universal
tradition of the
Christian church was
fused with the Polish
religious tradition. The
composer creates the
religious folk-like
climate primarily through
the character of the
melodies which are akin
to to the plainchant
melodies to the text of
Stabat Mater (the
sequence, and especially
the hymn) and their
paraphrases in Polish
religious songs (e.g. Sta
a Matka Bole ciwa [The
Dolorous Mother was
standing]) as well as
motifs from Polish Lenten
songs and Gorzkie ale
(Bitter Laments).
Szymanowski did not
introduce them as
quotations, but
intersperses the melodic
lines, which are more
fully developed and
frequently highly
chromatic, with diatonic
phrases, based on modal
scales. They appear in
all the movements of the
work determining its
cohesion. In dividing the
twenty-stanza text into
separate segments,
Szymanowski created a
six- movement cantata. He
took care to distinguish
between the emotional
shades of the various
movements, varying his
selection of solo voices
(soprano, contralto,
baritone), the voices of
the chorus (female or
mixed) and the orchestral
forces. In the first and
third movements the
lyrical idiom prevails;
the first movement,
portraying the Mother of
God at the foot of the
cross, has a narrative
character, whereas the
third is a kind of prayer
from a man who
sympathizes with, and who
wishes to be associated
with Mater Dolorosas
pain. In these movements
only the female voices
are used (soprano,
contralto and female
chorus), while the
orchestra is employed in
a chamber style,
sometimes drawing on solo
accompanying parts (e.g.
the beginning of the
third movement). The
fourth movement, which
continues the mood of
prayerful contemplation,
is designed for soprano
and contralto solo as
well as unaccompanied
chorus. On the other
hand, the second and
fifth movements,
involving the
participation of solo
baritone and the full
chorus and orchestra, are
similar with regard to
forces and their dramatic
character, which is
austere in expression,
harsh in tone, and
markedly dissonant. Here
grand climaxes appear
with powerful orchestral
tutti. The sixth movement
crowns the whole. The
lyrical, soft melody of
the solo soprano at the
beginning is gradually
strengthened by the
addition of the female
chorus and the solo
contralto, and in the
final section, the solo
baritone as well as the
tutti of chorus and
orchestra. The
conclusion, subdued and
full of concentration,
suggests the introvert
character of the
experience as opposed to
its dramatic pathos.
Stabat Mater by
Szymanowski is part of a
long tradition of
compositions based on the
text of the medieval
sequence - ranging from
polyphonic works by
Josquin des Prés and
Palestrina to the
romantic Stabat by
Giuseppe Verdi and Anton
n Dvo ák. And it was
perhaps because of his
consciousness of this
tradition that
Szymanowski used
stylizing devices in the
spirit of early music.
The archaization
manifests itself not only
in the character of the
melodies and their modal
framework, but also in
the harmonies (with their
predominance of triads,
open fourths and fifths
chords and doubled
thirds), the simple
rhythms as well as the
texture of the choruses
(esp. the fourth
movement). The composer
does not, however,
imitate the style of any
specific historical
epoch, but combines
resources taken from
early music with modern
tonal and harmonic
techniques. Archaization
in Stabat Mater serves,
moreover, a symbolic
function; in evoking the
many-centuries old
tradition of church
music, it emphasizes the
universal nature of the
idea contained in the
text of the sequence,
while the re-reading of
the text by the composer
gives the work its
individual features.

of Martin Luther's

adapted Catholic

y Monteverdi's Selva
morale et spirituale
(1641) stands entirely in
the shadow of his famous
Vespers 1610. The
editions from 1610 and
1641 both include music
for the Mass and Vespers,
but each of these
collections was composed
under much different
circumstances during
Monteverdi's lifetime. If
the works of 1610 are a
bold combination of
traditional compositional
techniques and avant
garde music, which were
intended by this weary
Court Composer at Mantua
as an application
portfolio for a new job,
the 1641 collection is
the only church music by
the mature Monteverdi
which was published after
almost thirty years in
his position as Music
Director of St. Mark's
Cathedral: the latter, a
kind of best of
collection from his many
years of experience as a
church musician. In
Venice the composer had
not only a fabulous, but
a large ensemble at his
disposal (finally, about
35 singers, alone)! The
combination of soloistic
and weighty tutti
sections makes a big
effect in this music, it
makes the music, with its
clearly defined sections
and, for the most part
homophonic choral
passages more easily
performable than the
Vespers for today's
choirs. The new edition,
comprised initially of
three volumes, also
includes those works from
the Selva Morale (a Mass
and two Magnificats)
which have already been
published by Carus, as
well as all further
liturgical compositions
for use in the church.
Volume III, Motetti,
Salve Regina, Himini,
contains compositions for
1 to 3 voices and basso
continuo, some with two
violins (the psalms are
included in both the
Salmi I and Salmi II
volumes). The edition is
based on the methods
employed in the much
acclaimed Carus edition
of the Vespers: * It
contains a detailed
foreword with suggestions
for notation, scoring and
for the liturgical use of
individual compositions.
* For the present edition
four of the five
surviving printed copies,
as well as contemporary
manuscript were

characteristics of the
edtion of 1641. A

the pieces are printed

Schmidt, Beate
Agnes. TheKleine
geistliche Konzerte(Small
Sacred Concertos),
published in two parts in
1636 and1639, are among
the best-known and
well-loved compositions
of Heinrich Schutz. Both
parts constitute a
collection of vocal
pieces in a broad range
of styles written for
only a few voices with
basso continuo. Most of
the texts are in German,
but some are also in
Latin. The first volume
presents a broad spectrum
of vocal scoring, musical
forms and texts: there
are solo concertos in the
Italian style,
traditional four-part
motets, well-known Psalm
texts set to music, hymns
as well as mystically
contemplative meditative
literature. The
concertos' monodic
qualities and high level
of virtuosity -
especially in the
compositions with German
text - made Schutz a
household name shortly
after theKleine
geistliche Konzertewere
published in print. As
the works required no
large ensembles, they
could be performed for
different occasions and
in various locations;
particularly during the
Thirty Years' War they
could be heard at court,
in cities or in villages
but also in schools or at
home.
Unlike the
1963 edition of theKleine
geistliche Konzerte(BA
3664, BA 3665, BA 3666)
as part of the New Schutz
Edition, this new volume
presents the works for
the first time in their
original form and order.
A historic-critical
evaluation of all
relevant sources yields
new information regarding
the composer's
intentions, the printing
process and the works'
reception. Furthermore,
the edition includes a
reconstruction of an
earlier version that has
not been published until
now. This edition is
geared towards
musicologists, as well as
professional musicians
and amateurs with a keen
interest in early
music.

Language:
Latin. With the
publication of his
hypnotic Pater noster,
Carus proudly presents
Jacek Sykulski as a new
composer in the Carus
Contemporary series.
Whilst Sykulski has
achieved worldwide
success as Director of
the Academic Choir at the
University of Poznan and
the Poznan Boys' Choir,
as a composer he has
remained a well-guarded
secret until now. In his
sacred compositions he
combines in music the
deeply Catholic-imbued
tradition of his country
with his own
compositional technique,
characterized by a
tremendous vocal
sensuousness of sound and
a conscious use of
tonality enriched by
dissonance. His Pater
noster was composed in
2009 and revised in 2015
for a performance by the
RIAS Kammerchor in
Berlin. The first section
of this three-part work
for eight-part choir
(tenors and sopranos also
split into three) begins
with the invocation Pater
noster homophonically in
A minor. This then
introduces the Gregorian
liturgical melody of the
Our Father canonically
and aleatorically, like a
contemplative
congregational hymn. The
middle section calls out
Dein Reich komme in
increasingly insistent
rhythmic declamation,
more demanding, with
hypnotic repetitions and
intensifications. In the
last section, Sykulski
returns to the opening
harmonies, but now a
semitone lower on A flat,
followed by an
intensification at the
words sed libera nos a
malo - and delivery us
from evil once more; this
ends unresolved in a
diatonic cluster on A
flat as the paradigm of
our imperfect earthly
existence. The
eight-minute
unaccompanied composition
is extremely singable,
impressive, and not
difficult to master. The
piece is suitable for use
in the liturgy, as well
as in concerts and
competitions. $12.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

major. Language:
Latin. The Missa
Beatissimae Virginis
Maria was composed ca.
1758-1760, between the
end of his tenure as a
singer in the choir of
St. Stephen's in Vienna
and the beginning of his
first position as
violinist and music
director for the Bishop
of Grosswardein. The
scoring of SATB (for soli
as well as choir) and
church trio was augmented
by two trumpets (clarini)
and timpani, as well as
two trombones. The latter
instruments double the
alto and tenor voices in
tutti passages but in the
Et incarnatus est they
are also employed in an
obbligato role. On the
one hand, as an early
work this Mass is in the
style of the festive
baroque tradition, as
practiced in south-German
regions until the middle
of the eighteenth
century; on the other
hand it already shows the
subjective inspiration
which distinguished it
from many of the mass
settings by Haydn's
contemporaries. Score and
